I didn't quite understand you. When the battle starts, there are eight slots on the screen to allocate troops and leaders. They are numbered with Roman numerals: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII. Assign them as you see fit and use the numbers on the main keyboard to control them during the battle. Then you can split and merge units by pressing the F3 key, then F5.
You can change the battle size in the settings menu. There, you can also configure which troops will appear first if the number of soldiers exceeds the limit. Or use a mod to remove the restriction.
