The steering wheel seems very stiff as you turn it to drive down the street. Now you open the hood but can't see the obvious problem. You can see that the power steering belt is still in place, and there is no power steering fluid leakage. Although the power steering fluid appears black, it is still full. The power steering belt looks worn and has passed the four-year replacement interval for power steering belts. You replace the belt. However, it happens again a few days later and only gets worse.
The only reason is the usual wear and tear of the internal parts or "the rack" of the power steering. The black colour of the power steering fluid is caused by metal wear from the rack.
