  • CUSTER TOWNSHIP - A burning barrel was the cause of a fire that quickly got out of control and burned about four or five acres near the southwest intersection of Darr and Johnson roads Monday afternoon.
Scottville Fire Department was initially dispatched to 245 N. Darr Road at 3:36 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters called for assistance from Custer Fire Department and Branch Fire Departments. All three fire departments had just arrived back at their stations after fighting a house fire in Sheridan Township (See story here).
The fast moving fire, fanned by strong southeast winds, jumped Johnson Road at one point. Despite the fast moving fire, much of the land was marshland and firefighters had the fire under control within an hour. Had it moved in a different direction it would have endangered several structures, including barns and houses.
Fountain Fire Department Auxiliary also responded to the scene.
