Im a veteran. Gulf war era ive seen a lot of survival shows, heard so many tips. You by far have the right ideas your entertaining. And everyone learns a lot. Thank you so much army strong
Thank you Brother Kevin for your service. Im happy you like the vids and how I do things. I try to make em as entertaining as possible. Take care and Thanks for watching!
I have been out in the woods most of my life I am 60 and camped in a lot of situations and did it by repitition it worked so I stuck to it just getting by but after watching your vids I can truly say that I am not ruffing it at all you can teach a old dog new tricks and I thank ya for that!
Its good to hear I inspired you. You dont have to starve or freeze or eat bugs to enjoy this kind of stuff. Its good to carry your gear and have a back up survival kit and know how to use everything in it. If you ever have any questions about gear just ask me. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
You have come a LONG way in 10 years. Your videography skills, equipment, and presentation are much more refined now. You didn't even have a machete in this vid. 😄 I enjoy and learn from all your videos and appreciate all the time and effort you put into them.
Oh yes, after ten years behind a camera you eventually get better. Lol. I'm glad you like all the videos Mark
Very simple and practical. I believe that the simple and practical seems to be missing from many outdoor videos. You did it right, good job.
Thanks! Sometimes simple is the best way to go
Reallybigmonkey1 Sure thing. For me simple is usually the best way 👍
Very cool that you used this set up man! That was a good example of sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Im glad it helped you out. Take care and Thanks for watching my friend.
Those are Nomex flight gloves. Worn by the military flight crews. I started wearing them to deal with fires and cooking since they were Nomex. They also helped keep me away from poison ivy and they keep mosquitos away. They are so easy to work in I wind up wearing them almost always. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thank you for posting these videos and making my life a little easier when I'm out there in the woods. You keep posting and I'll keep watching.
Brother that is awesome! I love to hear it when others get onto the roe bed bandwagon. Rope and paracord has a hundreds uses and its even better to make a custom fit bed into the trees and branches.Take care and Thanks for watching my friend.
I've never seen such a simple and effective shelter! I always use too much rope, too many tent pegs and WAY too much time! thanks for the great idea :)
Dude, I love the simplicity and the function. Being from Tennessee and somewhat bi-lingual I was able to translate the entire video for some of my less literate friends. Great video. Rock on.
Blew my mind the revolver saw knife 🤠I have collected knives for > 70 years.
Oh that Revolver is one amazing tool! I'm shocking it didn't sell a lot better than it did
One of the main reasons I dont do tarp shelters is that I do not want to be on the ground. I have toyed with an idea similar to this, but have never put into practice. Thanks for doing this! I love your videos
After I set the tarp completely up, I would throw the bug net inside like a blanket and lay on it but stretch the front of the net up and attach it to the roof with velcro after I was inside the tarp. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thats cool man. I love it when a natural shelter site just seems to pop up when you need it most. I have plenty more weird ideas coming up. I am having a very hard time here lately getting free time to film. I will soon I hope. Thanks for watching my friend.
When you said "take your stick and cram it through" I laughed so hard! Also, interesting video- will definitely have to try it out
Cool! I'm glad you liked it and are gonna try it. Nothing beats having a floor to lay on. Good luck! Thanks for watching my friend.
Awesome video David. I like the floor idea too. Good leak roof design
Thanks David, I'm glad you liked it
Good idea Brother... thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and can use it. Theres another version I never got around to showing for cold weather. Some folks dump leaves on their tarp for insulation. The wind can blow them away and the rain can make em cold and heavy. So, you can lay two tarps down, make the first shelter like this, then cover in leaves then cover it with a second tarp. Kinda like a double wall insulation tarp. I'll do a vid on that one someday. Thanks for watching my friend.
Dave! I tried it!
Lotta questions, but IT WORKS!
I had 2 days to camp w/ my 8yo.
It was raining when I woke.
Went to a park where rain had stopped
Had no time to buy tent.
Had 2 HarbrFrt tarps and HomeDep rope;
this video in my head.
Camped between 2 streams @Stokes Forest,
It rained, didn't hear it. Only wet from Condensation.
FORGOT to sweep hard to sleep on twigs.
Didn't set up the mosquito net,
a centipede scared son.
Then I set up the net.
More Q's later...
Thx
Awesome video Dave! Simple, yet effective. I like it... 👍👍👍
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Fantastic video. I never thought of doing something like that before as i generally use a hammock system. I'm gonna try that out. Thanks for taking the time to share, and, I have to say that accent kept me mesmerized throughout. Greets from the UK.
Sounds cool man, I'm glad you liked it. I love using this set up because I hate sleeping directly on the ground. Good luck and Thanks for watching my friend.
I tried this last night it worked great! I used a contractor trash bag as a door
Thats awesome bro!
Thanks Shaun, Im glad you like what I do. That knife saw combo is called a Revolver made by SOG. they sell them every where online. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thats good to hear man. I almost always have carabiners with me or attached to my pack. theres a ton of uses for them for sure. Thats good to hear this is your new warm weather shelter. I need to show the winter version of this one, it's pretty cool too. Thanks for watching my friend.
Sounds good to me! Yep, I have roughed it many times but I'd much rather be comfortable. I also feel like theres a different shelter for every climate and environment. Im glad you learned a few things, Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Well during the warmer weather, I sleep just like this. During the winter, sometimes I carry two tarps. I lay one flat, then set up this tarp like it on top. I cover with leaves them fold the underlying tarp over the leaves. The wind never blows them away and they never get rained on. I cant say how I cook because I have about 30 wild methods of cooking. theres a lot of them unknown methods on my channels now. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! Im glad you like the tarp shelters. Youre right when you say the semi sustainable shelter isnt really my thing. It would be if I had time, all I have time for is one nighters here lately. I do have access to property and permission yo build a permanent shelter and I want to and film it very bad but I just do not have the time this year. I have one of the new superlight tarps and I hate the color but it seems like a very good tarp so far. Thanks for watching my friend.
Cool man, Im glad you liked it. This is the most simple shelter Ive found to set up with a floor. I hate sleeping in the leaves and bugs. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
LOL, it is pretty short bro. I think this one was made years ago back when I was under the standard 15 minute upload limit. I'd never make it nowadays, lol. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
A can see several possibilities for this. Thanks for sharing your design.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. I live in Northwest Georgia. Thanks for watching my friend.
Sounds cool! I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. I hardly ever get any snow here, just a light dusting. When ever its a layer snow I just sleep in a hammock of a tarp shelter with a double floor and a fire. I have almost no experience with really deep snow. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Greetings back at ya from Georgia. Thanks for watching my friend.
I was about to crack on your accent. Being a uppity New Yorker. But then i watched the video and had a good time. Respect.
went out with a buddy the area we went to was mostly sage brush and rocky, which is how it is in my neck of the woods, found a nice thick branch while hiking in and deiced to make this shelter, it worked awesome. took a bit to get use to the tight space, we had a light rain that evening and i stared dry... keep up the videos can't wait to see what you come up with next
Cool! Im glad you like the vids. Its always good to hear that people learn stuff from me. I have been told that my accent is called an "Appalachia Accent" Thanks for watching my friend.
love your videos you enspiered me to make a survial kit and now i am hiking almost every other weekend
We used this set up a lot when my friends and I used to paint ball. You can't beat this basic set up! Wow brother, you just made me feel old. It was 20 years ago when I did the paint ball weekend warriors thing....
Great vids, keep them coming!
Thats right! A roof and a floor is all you need. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thank you for your response. I just found your page and watched a couple of video's. I enjoy your page and your accent reminds me of a lot of my family members in The Tennessee area. Love it.
I'm glad you liked it. To me, nothing is better than having a floor. I hate laying on the ground. Greetings from Georgia in the USA. Thanks for watching my friend.
Cool, it is a pretty easy way to use a tarp and not have to lay in leaves. I did this video back when I was trying to use just unmodified store bought stuff. I do add alot of eyelets to my tarps for different shelter set ups, this one needed some extras. I dont know about vise grip type clamps but I do sometimes carry some small plastic coated clamps that are spring loaded and only 1 inch big. I think I bought them at big lots. I use them in "Tarp Bunk Shelter" Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Well you might could use one of them but I usually just keep my boots nearby and crawl out and go. I absolutely hate sleeping on the ground too. Ive done it and hate it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thats cool man. This is a very cheap and lightweight way of having a shelter with a floor. Im glad you liked it, Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! Its always good to hear that. This one is a 7x9. Good for cool weather, it helps minimize the space keeping the heat in. I like a bigger one in the summer for a little air flow. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching my friend.
David you are very inspiring !!!!Thanx for your post!!!!
Good to hear from you! Nick says Hi. Yes, theres snakes all over the place here. During the warm months, I try to never sleep on the ground. I sleep off the ground in a rope bed or something. I usually sleep on the ground in the winter when the creepy crawlies and slithering snakes arent out and about. Take care now and Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Greetings from the Deep South in the U.S.A! Thanks for watching my friend.
Absolutely brother! I hate sleeping in the leaves. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Cool, My brother and sister were both born in Murfreesboro Tenn. I was born and raised in Northwest Georgia. We all have whats called an "Appalachia" accent as far as Im told. Im glad you like the videos, Thanks for watching my friend.
Hey that pretty cool. Yes, I live in Northwest Georgia so we are fairly close. Thats cool. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thats pretty cool. I have a lot of Irish ancestors. I bought that knife saw combo at Smokey mountain knifeworks. Its called a SOG Reolver. They also sell them on Amazon. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks. This was early in my youtube career so, I didnt know much about filming or editing. After 61 videos, Im getting better at it. My son goes with me about half the time now so, hes the "Camera man" as he calls it,lol. The flip knife is a SOG Revolver. Its a very handy lightweight knife and the saw is double ground like a japanese pruning saw so it never clogs up. They are the cheapest on Amazon . com Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching my friend.
Man that is one handy knife, I love using it. It is a SOF Revlover. They sell them all over the internet. That blade is above average, its ground like a japanese pruning saw so the teeth never get clogged up. Thanks for watching my friend.
Nice shelter. I don't like lying on the bare ground. I enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Thanks.
Sounds cool. all I can say about the stony floor is to make sure and gather up some leaves and pine straw to go under it. I hate having stones stick in my back. I'd like to see a video on that one. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks man. Its a 7x9. I like a little bigger one in cold weather so I can Double wrap. You can even stuff leaves into the inner wall for insulation when you do that. This one works pretty good in mild weather. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
To me, if youre going to make your own, the perfect size will be 8 feet x 12 feet. Some set ups youll have to double fold but that size will cover anything you want to do. Put the eyelets every two feet except for the centerlines, put two in the centerlines, not just one. Thanks for watching my friend.
I have a lot of family in Tennessee and N.C. We are Cherokee. I have been there a few times and love it there. Beautiful country.
Thanks! Im happy to hear you watched them. The reason I use a tarp over a line is because its so warm/ hot in the south. Lots of times I like to slide the tarp back if it isnt raining to let in a litttle air at night. I did kinda combine this tarp style with my Extreme weather shelter. Thanks for watching my friend.
Came for the tarp stayed for the accent - keep knocking out these videos David!
Thanks Cristian! Yes, this is a fantastic way of making a quick shelter with a floor out of a simple tarp. I keep a small tarp in all my vehicles for just such an emergency. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thank you, Its a SOG revolver. I love it, its a lightweight and handy tool.I checked out your channel and liked what I saw. I subbed you.
Nothing wrong with being comfortable and eating good food. Lucky me, it never gets really really cold here. Thanks for watching my friend.
Yep, it is kinda like a cacoon and quite comfortable when it cool outside it's pretty warm. I'm glad you liked it, Thanks for watching my friend.
Im happy to share, thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! Funny thing, I was born in Georgia but my brother and sister were born in Murfreesboro Tenn. so we all have different accents for some odd reason. They sound alot different from me. As far as the ole Brown recluse, I try to sleeep with long sleeves and gloves on and I try my best to roll up the edge of the tarp. It may not work but its gotta slow em down alittle. One of my mentors said to burn the ground around your tarp and it would keep them away. Thanks for watching my friend.
Very good to hear it worked so well! This is my favorite way of setting up cheap tarp and getting a floor just like a tent. I like the mods you mention that you have made to yours. It does help to kinda get it out and away from the tree. I have experimented with a welders blanket as sort of a vestibule/fire reflector. I havent got the kinks worked out yet tho. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching my friend.
Cool , Im glad you liked the video. That knife saw combo is made by SOG and its called a Revolver. The knife blade is half serrated and keeps an edge fairly well. The saw part is ground like a japanese pruning saw so it doesnt clog up. The are any where from $20.00 to $30.00. Very cheap for such a decent blade. Check on Amazon first. Hope that helps, take care and thanks for watching my friend.
What can I say, ya gotta look good when youre on video, LOL! I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Well, when I add grommets to a tarp , I always get the grommets from the fabric store or hobby shop that are big enough for regular carabiners. Its just a tarp so Its not under that much pressure. Most of my mosquitoe nets have velcro strips sewn on them. That way I can seal em up. Cool idea on number 3.
You know what I like about your videos? You use common items. A while back, I looked in to getting fixed up with the backpackers tarps I've seen people use. I thought those thin, light, waterproof tarps would be great. I found plenty of them for well over $100 bucks each, some over $200. I'm happy to say that that wild hair passed. I went to walmart and eased my pain lol
Well I kinda agree to a point, I''ll explain why. The smallest tarp that most stores sell, is a 7 x 9. I am using a 7 x 9 on this set up so carrying two of these "small" tarps would double the weight. The other thing is, with one rolled up tarp, its sealed off to rain and bugs alot better than a separate top and bottom. Now I do use two tarps in the winter, I double wall them and stuff the walls with leaves. Good idea you have tho if you can find smaller tarps. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thats cool! Mine are pretty old but still in good shape. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! This one was over a year ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I was born and raised in NorthWest Georgia. Funny thing, i have a thicker accent than most around here, lol. Thanks for watching my friend.
Yes, you would have to use the 6 foot as the length. You would need to use the 8 foot for the floor and walls so you could wrap it enough to seal rain out. I prefer 7x9. 7 for my length and 9 for the floor and walls. Thanks for watching my friend.
Im glad you liked it. This is the most simple way of using one tarp as a roof and a floor. I myself sleep in a hammock sometimes too. My accent is whats referred to as an "Appalachia Accent" If it keeps viewers thats OK with me, Ha Ha. Thanks for watching my friend.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Very cool! I always love to hear when some one is going to use this. Its a great way to have a floor with just a tarp. Good luck and I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching my friend.
Great emergency shelter Dave! Useful for many people.
Good weekend!
Cristian
Me encanta tener un buen equipo para trabajar. Esto hace que el trabajo sea mucho más fácil. Me alegro de que te haya gustado. Gracias por su atención amigo.
I love this shelter. So simple. Can't wait to use it and thanks for sharing
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it, Thanks for watching my friend.
Well if you have a fire inside you dont have to worry about chiggers, fleas and ticks. You gotta admit, laying on the ground without a fire sucks. Im designing a tent that works with a Dakota pit now. Video should be up this winter. Thanks for watching my friend.
No, not quite myself in this one. This was one of my earliest videos were I didnt quite know how to be myself in front of the camera. The shelter is kinda cool tho. Thanks for watching my friend.
Well, no video on the ole backpack because what I carry in it is always changing. The contents are different depending on if Im going to be on a mountain, in a swamp or in the woods. Also if its one night or two or three. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
LOL, you mean you had to convert for your non southern speaking friends, Ha Ha. This is just about the most simple way of taking one tarp and having a roof and a floor and kinda retaining body heat to a degree. Im glad you liked it, Thanks for watching my friend.
Yes, you are correct. Any shelter where you just lay on the ground you can get wet in a rain storm. If you curl up the edges with some sticks or if you even have tent pegs, it will tolerate a little rain. this is a kinda mild weather shelter. I also have a newer video on "Extreme Weather Shelter" Its a whole bunch more work to set up tho, Ha Ha. Take care andThanks for watching my friend.
Im glad you like it. Leave out the talking and video making and Im sure it could be set up in 3 to 5 mins. I'd say 5 if you had to fumble around with the tarp and paracord if it werent packed right. If it was folded or rolled up right, and the rope or paracord was neatly colied up, 3 mins easily. Thanks for the sub, and thank you for watching my friend.
It sure does! I think this tarp was around 10 dollars. Add a fleece or wool blanket and youve got a nice winter shelter. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
If I remember right, that SOG revolver came for Smoky Mountain Knifeworks. I have recently seen them on Amazon for alot cheaper. Its a fantastic knife. A 12 x 9 tarp can be double wrapped for the winter time just like this set up. You just cant beat 6 bucks for a shelter can you? Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
Ha Ha, they must. Why would anyone not like having a floor? Take care and thanks for watching my friend.
The tarp for this set up is a 7x9. for really old weather I carry a larger size and double wrap it and stuff the inner wall with leaves for insulation. I havent made a video on that set up but I need to sometime. Thanks for watching my friend.
How did I miss this video? thought I saw everything you had..lol..good stuff👍
Lol, well I'm up to 160 something videos so I guess it's easy to miss a few. Thanks for watching Sheila!
Hey This is NICE !!! I like seeing innovation, and people thinking for themselves. Do you realize, this country was BUILT on people thinking and doing for themselves? GOOD FOR YOU !! I've seen something of this sort before. The tarp was a little bigger, and paracord was tied off in EVERY grommet. About 6' lengths. Use what you need, branches used as stakes. Instead of metal clips, HUGE plastic reusable ties were used in place for lightweight carry.
