  • Yesterday, I visited the location of the legendary Candlestick Park, former home of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants as well as the Raiders for a short period of time.
Also, when I said 2012 NFC Championship game, I meant the 2011 season NFC Championship game which took place in January of 2012.

That would take taking away the team from York. I'd be all for it. Levi's is nothing but an erector set of a park, and some good earthquake would have it tumbling down. Same for the redone Stanford Stadium. Let some expansion team have Levi's. Better yet, it can still be used for many events, just not the 49ers home games. Also, the Packers for years played in Green Bay and Millwaukee. There's no reason the 49ers couldn't play in SF and Santa Clara, split the schedule in both towns.

I have an idea: the 49ers rebuild Candlestick Park and leave Levi's for some expansion NFL team. Bring back all the trophies and stuff in the 49er Museum at Levi's to a rebuilt for football Candlestick Park. There is another site, though, right between US 101 and the Bayshore Highway, where there is plenty of land sitting there unused, just south of the SF border with Daly City, near the Cow Palace. It would be next to Caltrain and Sunnydale's Muni! No need to drive to the game.

I was now looking at the most beautiful green grass baseball field! My very first sports memory of the Giants. What incredible memories this place has for so many… From Giants/Dodgers games with brawls everywhere to our Niners and the dynasty that was Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Fred Dean, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice, J.T., etc. From my first experience going to my first Giants game as a kid, to growing up in this stadium… I remember cutting class in high school to go watch a day game with buddies and buying bleacher seat tickets for $2.50. Sitting in that sun… great, great memories! Oh how I wish they would’ve rebuilt a stadium for our Niners right on this very spot where “The ‘Stick” stood. Yes, many don't know or forget that in the Raider's first two seasons, they played at Kezar and Candlestick in 1960, and Candlestick in 1961. They had no place to play in Oakland, so a San Francisco location was offered by The City. Then comes 1975 and the Oakland Arena isn't available for the Warriors for the 1975 NBA Finals, and they play games 2 and 3 at their former home, the Cow Palace, in front of 13,000. The average attendance at the Oakland Arena that year was less than 9,000. Franklin Mieuli should have kept the Warriors playing at both venues after 1971.

In 2007, the Bay Meadows race track was closing, in San Mateo, roughly half way between SF and San Jose, but closer to SF. That would have been a great location: near the Caltrain in the town, near two freeways, Interstate 280 and US 101. Jeff wanted the team in Silicon Valley. Also, the construction firm had connections to Santa Clara University.

And now there are even more places to go in SF, like Crissy Field and the Presidio, which was off limits to anyone not in the Army back then. Otherwise, it would have had a grandstand footprint more like that of Dodger Stadium. And as it happened, for the Raiders' last three games of 1960, and all their home games in 1961, they played at Candlestick, and the field layout was exactly the same as it was for the 49ers. I agree. Some billionaire needs to buy the 49ers and move them back, or build a stadium near to where Candlestick was. There's an industrial wasteland of sorts between the Old Bayshore Highway that runs between Brisbane and SF's south end/Daly City and the freeway. It would be near the Sunnydale Muni station, Cal Train's Bayshore station, and right off US 101. At least the 49ers could play half their schedule in SF and half in Santa Clara. The Packers for decades played in Green Bay and Millwaukee.
