    Toxic masculinity also refers to the idea that showing affection or being loving/caring to other men is a bad thing- "no homo" is baseline for this. The man in this video was very reluctant to hug other men, even his son. My father grew up without his dad telling him he LOVED him- because- thats GAY. That is incredibly damaging to a child.
    These guys are openly affectionate and platonic, this behaviour is socially acceptable for women; because of that we are 'allowed' to be like this with people and each other all the time. Talking about and expressing the 'softer' and more 'loving' emotions is considered GAY or effeminate and that is another part of toxic masculinity. Its not all about violence or anger.... its about refraining from things that are termed 'more feminine', that which the binary considers more feminine out of fear of being deemed "less of a man".
    Karamo continuously states throughout these series that vulnerability and this 'softness' is a strength- and being able to show this and participate in this behaviour takes a lot of strength and confidence, which a lot of men who have been victims of toxic masculinity LACK.
    Bless these boys- I cant help but sob through these episodes because seeing men interact without those preconceived ideas of how they should or are expected to act is just so lovely and reassuring, to me

      My 13 years old brother came home from school one day looking all sad, and when I asked him why, he told me that a bunch of boys mocked him - calling him 'gay' and stuff in a really condescending way. All because he wanted to hug his friend. Its truly damaging.

    • @mereSwamp
      @mereSwamp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      I never get how people think it's wrong for fathers to show affection and automatically make assumptions about it being sexual. It's your kid for Pete's sake! It's natural for parents to love and be affectionate and caring for their children. People need to stop hypersexualizing every single thing.

      Don’t hate on the slouchy sweatshirt he looks amazing and is VERY on trend. He picked one that was cut well and adjusted it perfectly (FRENCH TUCK) so he didn’t look oversized himself. The key about “oversized” wear is having it be slouchy and oversized on you, but not letting it make you look oversized. He CAN GET IT in that outfit. Frick even I want it 😂

    • @yakidoole4378
      @yakidoole4378 6 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Where guys put on a facade of masculinty by laughing at things they don't find funny or preventing themselves to reveal what they're feeling by never crying in front of people or avoiding speaking hollistically. Now not everyone wants to see everyone else crying and only laughing when they want to but at the same time it gets toxic and it stops people from being down to earth. Some people just don't know when its time to cancel that toxic masculinity and express themselves. So many guys are consumed by it and it puts a lot of stress on them and i personally find it fokn annoying. It's toxic, It's a habit and it's a nature that manifests into who they are.

    • @yakidoole4378
      @yakidoole4378 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Its not, but hiding your emotions habitually is. You end up not talking about important problems and you also end up conforming blending in which I personally can't see how that's not horrible. Blending in and conforming, sometimes the hope and happiness we need to find we find in ourselves and you can't find happiness within yourself if you're not being authentic and if you're basing who you are off of a pointless lie. Now in some cases you can hide your emotions but still maintain a good heart and *true* identity. But that's not toxic masculinity, toxic masculinity is where a guy hides his emotions too much. And its *too much* because it manifests into their humanity, their beliefs and their identity. Also on a side note, showing your emotions most of the time doesn't make you seem more effeminate and it certainly doesn't have to. When you hide your emotions you subtract from the down to earth person you could have been. NOTHING constructive came out of hiding information from everyone. So what's even the point of hiding your emotion? The only reason I can think of is so you don't get judged. And that reason is toxic and its their because of societal pressures. Its a fear. Toxic masculinity is also toxic because guys are too afraid of showing emotion and they don't set a good example for others so all the other guys take after one another and the problem multiplies. Why the fuck would you trade your identity and authenticity because everyone else is and some assholes will judge you for being more excited, down to earth and crying when you can't help it. I think people that cry all the time are fine but i can see why other people would think theyre wusses. Maybe people should grow thicker skin and deal with their problems instead of crying about them around everyone else. But a thick skin isnt fucking hiding your sadness because your afraid, that's weak and worse than the people that do cry.

    Please come to India.
    I really do believe Queer Eye is the cure for our toxic masculinity.
    And homosexuality is finally accepted here. And Netflix is India's favourite streaming service.
    Ok that's the end of my sales pitch. But please come to India.

    I want to nominate my dad. I don't know that they'd go to New Zealand though. Ever since he got cancer his mind set has been very bleak, the house is always a mess and he's a bit of a hermit. He doesn't even have cancer anymore (let's hope it stays that way), but that diagnosis messes with your head, and he has other on-going medical issues that comes with getting older. I just want him to be happy.
    Watching this episode reminds me that Australia and New Zealand have a very "she'll be right" attitude, especially with men. They don't talk about their problems or feelings. I think it's important to encourage conversation instead of brushing it off.

      @meftihe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      If you have an accent in America every SINGLE conversation becomes about the accent and about your life story and it's honestly exhausting. Every expat I know tones it down on purpose so we can get by. Also it sort of sucks when people mimic you, which happens daily- you even see it happening to Tan on the show. It all comes from well meaning excitement, I get that. But it can be super embarrassing and makes you want to not speak.

      Shit, I would almost love this show even more if they did it TH-cam style. Each "episode" is spread across one week. Six videos per week, one for each of the cast plus the introduction video. 15-20 minutes each. Each one of the fab 5 could honestly have much harder hitting pieces if it were broken up that way. Even though the weekly suspense would be near catastrophic.

      Ethan Smith they really do... I grew up in country Australia, my dad is a farmer... they struggle to open up about their own feelings and emotions and will express it in unhealthy ways. It is also why suicide amongst males in country Australia is so high. They are told to be a man and suck it up. My father told me he was hardly ever shown affection from his father, because that was how they were raised. Countrymen in Australia need to know that their mental issues should be talked about, and if they are struggling or upset, they are allowed to express it.
