  • In today's stream, we're diving into the Elektron Octatrack, a standout piece of gear that remains a cornerstone in any studio setup. The Octatrack's versatility and depth make it an unparalleled tool for music production and live performance. We'll also explore which templates are best suited for specific use cases, enhancing your workflow and creative expression.
Firstly, the Octatrack's sampling capabilities are top-notch. It's not just a sampler; it's a performance instrument. With real-time time-stretching and pitch-shifting, it adapts samples to your project tempo seamlessly. This makes it ideal for live performances, where flexibility and adaptability are key. Regarding effects (FX), the Octatrack is a powerhouse. From the Ultimate Octatrack FX Template by EZBOT, we see a range of creative options:
Recording Loops: This feature allows for on-the-fly recording, making it perfect for capturing live improvisations or layering sounds.
Save Recording to File: You can save your recordings for future use or transfer them to your computer, offering excellent utility for project archiving.
Compressors: Separate compressors for stereo input sets A/B and C/D enable dynamic control over your mix, essential for both studio productions and live sets.
Sidechain Pumping: A staple in modern music production, especially in electronic genres. This effect creates a rhythmic pumping sound that can add life to your tracks.
Stutter FX: The Freeze Delays offer unique stutter effects, adding texture and complexity to your sound.
Record Stacking Trick: A technique for layering recordings, enhancing the depth and richness of your soundscape.
FX Blocks: These are categorized into Space, Build, Crush, and Party, each offering a suite of effects to shape your sound in different ways.
For techno producers, the Techno Performance Template is a game-changer. It includes modulated and clocked modulation effects, sidechain pumping, stutter effects, and a master equalizer. Its 8-bar structure syncs perfectly with the Octatrack's clock, making it ideal for creating dynamic techno tracks. In summary, the Octatrack's sampling prowess, coupled with its diverse range of effects and templates like the Ultimate FX Template and Techno Performance Template, solidify its status as an invaluable asset in any studio. Whether for live performance, studio production, or creative experimentation, the Octatrack offers unparalleled flexibility and creative potential.

I wish Elektron would release a successor to the OT that's just a performance mixer built as an Overbridge USB host. Keep the scenes and cross faders, modern updated effects, but handle individual track routings internally over USB. That's my dream anyway. I'd love to be able to separate drums and melody coming from syntakt, process them independently etc.

I can testify to not knowing how to use the OT, buying a template, and immediately getting to make music. Trying to learn the OT makes me want to throw it out the window tbh lolol. But the templates help me use it better than I ever would be able to without investing literal years of trial and error.

Just get a ivonnectivity box, 230, translates every usb midi to din, 2 ms latency (no issue, as every port has it, so its in sync) For sampling: i put a recorder trig on each pattern/track, then switch to a pattern where i playout the recording buffer from a flex, easy peasy. Learned it from Kenny Zaho, also a top channel for OT users. I build my tracks in Abelton , cut it to 64 bar loops, snd then trigger its slices in the OT, also good to remix your song this way. Just be structured, that helps most with the Octa.

The joy of working with real machines on the fly gives one the excitement of being in control. Ofcourse it’s gona be imperfect and that’s the challenge that gives one a boost to perform.
Performing live is a high. There is no second chance but the skill to cover up is instant gratification
    The DAW is for production.
It’s a sit down, mouse controlled laid back atmosphere.
The challenge to get it perfect with undo and redo.
It’s boring but it’s for a different application.
    DAW has limitless inputs
    On a lighter side
DAW is like marriage, you’re stuck 😂
LIVE is like dating, you attempt to give your best

I may have fallen in love with the octabot, although I have a feeling it's seeing other people... Side note what are your thoughts on the hydrasynth?? I traded a korg modwave for one which I saw you did a review on. Modwave is really sick but I find the hydrasynth sounds more full and has a more intuitive interface and way more customizable. I might get modwave again if they release a desktop version of mk2. Love the vids as always!!

Great video and love your content, keep up the good work!
I need to ask, how are you using your Digitakt, do you mangle/process melodic samples/loops with it?
Reason why I'm asking is I have the AR MK2, Digitone and the Heat FX but I really want a device to mangle melodic samples/own made loops for some idm, glitch type stuff and cant decide between the Digitakt or an Octatrack. The ARMK2 just isn't capable of that unfortunately.
The biggest gripe I have with the Digi is that it's mono, otherwise its a no-brainer for my needs. Whats your experience on that, do you loose a lot by only have mono outs if you want a device for melodic sample mangling?
    Appreciate it!

    • @ubiquitousreverser
      @ubiquitousreverser 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I wouldn’t presume to say that they won’t, but it seems like given everything it does simultaneously, that it would likely be quite a feat to incorporate a processor or set of processors to implement more features, like audio over USB, while processing all that you can do at the same time.
Given you can sample multiple tracks via different sources while your playing back a sequence, and it’s potentially recording live p-locking, it would probably be just a deep technical level of programming to do that w/what people are wanting feature wise.
I’ve only once unintentionally crashed the OTmk2 using the ‘arranger’
I had it set to playback pretty much every sequence maxed out (in total of 1,024 steps per bank) available from every bank(16 banks per project) in a single project, and I couldn’t load the project without it freezing up.
I had to delete the project to avoid it continuing to happen. And I didn’t even have scene’s programmed into it. So, not that newer cpu’s and larger amounts of ram wouldn’t be possible to implement, I’m just guessing it’s just quite a crunch to get ‘ALL’ that it does already to do more.
And given the mk1 & 2 share the same hardware they have been able to release updates that load on either one, so they’d likely just have to title it as something entirely different given they’d be implementing new chips etc and the programming/OS would be too different from the previous one’s to continue a backwards compatibility in future updates as they have with the mk1&2 since the mk2 only has a few extra buttons to cut out some combo shortcuts that the mk1 has.

@@ubiquitousreverser thanks a lot for the great and thorough response. That totally makes sense as I didn’t even think to consider/ know about certain functions of the octatrack and the processing power it must take. It’s pretty amazing what it can do already. Just would be sick to see them keep the same platform and premise but maybe update the quality of life things like an sd card memory instead or some newer efx as that seems to be a point for some tho im sure they are decent. Honestly the the usb thing isn’t a deal breaker for me. I like the layout of the octatrack too, i think it’s time to look online for a used one haha

Hey EZBOT, any way you can make templates using the main and Cue outputs as 2 independent stereo channels and be able to use the scenes in your other templates? Thinking this as outputs to assign them to an external mixer (as example Model 1.4), but using at the same time octatrack as a long samples and FX device?

    • @EZBOT_

It really depends on if you want stereo sampling, time-stretch, and fine control over slicing. That's what the OT offers, the DT is a faster/easier tool for sampling and playing back ones shots. I can't say yes or no to that question because it's going to change based on the project concept but I think you can benefit from both.

I personally wouldn’t trade the standard sequencer -> modules -> effects pedals -> mixer -> recorder workflow for the elektron workflow if someone paid me.

First of all, i am no hater. I own a model samples and a digitakt and….. a lot of hardware from other manufacturers too
Having said that, some counterarguments „ go get 1 or two octatracks“ that alone cost as much as a solid computer + a daw.
Using which you can do tenfold what all the devices in this video can do. Also to the „Hardware“ and then you mention Ableton.
Octatrack is a computer with software on it. The only advantage is that you have the hardware completely dedicated to the functions of this computer and software. You can also argue that editing sounds in a daw is on a completely different level.
When i am jamming with the hardware i think „so much easier than with my laptop“ and then when i use the daw iam like „never in life could i do this with the hardware. What a blessing modern software is“ . One complements the other.
Why i am saying this is solely so that people who cant afford a setup like yours (which alone what you show in this video is more than 4000 euros)
are not „doomed“ to not be able to have fun creating music.
Also „load the template and it immediately works, if you do it in Ableton you really need to know what you are doing“ well
what you suggest imply that someone who loads your template miraculously knows how the octatrack works . What i want to say by that is that you always need time to learn a tool. Any tool.
„Throw it in a sampler and do somethng out of it“ i find it one of the easiest things in the universe to throw something into ableton , slice audio to midi
and i could have a track half an hour later. I think if you know your instruments it is all relative
Every big „breakthrough“ if we wanna call it that, has already happened loooooong time before the octatrack existed. Its not like you need it to do music or to be more specific , you dont need any specific device cause it is never about the device or tools you use.
You can use a mini controller and customize it to your workflow. I know people who do live sets with a daw and have their laptop under the table and almost never look at it. Its not as black and white as you present it here. If It`s not „hardware you have fun , but daw you sit in front of a computer for a lifetime“.
Also i find „kick their ass“ something i could never associate with art and growing. I mean how can i kick someones ass with arts? I am not sure art is competition with others rather with yourself.
Of course i might be wrong but its just a sincere thought and thought of sharing it as you share yours in case you mean what you say by saying „lets have a discussion“ .
    Peace

I talk about how about all of this in the video and all of my statements are from my personal experience. I clearly state this is my perspective and it only applies to me several times. The octa will never receive a new update. Its said that Elektron fired a lot of time ago the guy who programmed octas internal software. It's said that is so complicated that they need to rewrite from 0.
    No overbridge chances, never.
I hoped the mk2 was going to change something but was just a make up.

The Octa received many updates after the guy left (not fired, btw), including the outstanding probability trigs one. Overbridge won't happen because of the h/w reasons. The MKII gave better headroom and the much needed extra controls and OLED screen - not bad for a midlife update, and as a matter of fact it's still peerless, and sales prove just that.

It is a myth that the octatrack is hard to use. It is not the most intuitiv UI but it is very ok. If you know the shortcuts and actually use it more than once a year you can work with it easiely. Don't tell me it is to complex. You can do a lot of things with it and you can do complex stuff but the functionality is easy to learn and to remember.
Just another video just because people don't know what to do with it.
Thats the biggest problem, sweetspot overall is not big, because of 1000 reasons. You. Have to find your own usecases
Stop the video and get on your octatrack. What about that?

I have a korg M3 and ugh I would hate to have a touch screen on the OT.
It’s just like saying I like the idea of an OT, but I still want an ipad to perform w/instead of hands on controls.
Once your familiar w/your setup on the OT, performing on it doesn’t have you solely staring at a screen the entire time, which is a more instrument/performance focused experience.
      Everyone is different though.

    • @mdeerocks6792
      @mdeerocks6792 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I have both, Deluge is a different product, its live performance features are limited comparing to Octatrack, but it's better at creating songs/finished tracks. It works well with Octatrack. Other than that, Deluge processing power is very limitied, 4-5 tracks which are more complex than basic single sample notes or basic synth and Deluge starts to choke. It doesn't have much headroom on the outpouts, very easy to make it digitally distort just by using internal synth, even using presets. Speaking of internal synth, the quality of it is at best mediocre, you pretty much have to use samples. Deluge is a great sketchpad and probably the best portable device out there, but it's not perfect. To be frank, bot of those are quite outdated, Octatrack FX and repitching are not great.

There is not other option in hardware not to mention it’s just classy asf and may take a min to get your head around. But old school meets the new. Way more mojo than an MPC. Wipes the floor with it. Can’t use those as an instrument line you can octa either. If your vanilla and boring anything else will seem better.

@@mooted5513 wrong, I'm very vocal in my criticism, Elektron included. just not here. even in their forums I keep saying Analog Heat is shit, for very particular reasons. but hey, 1st.ch.dist box like CultureVulture or an Overstayer makes 'real musicians' very happy, and both cost a fortune. I'm all for having 1 great instrument over a couple cheap boxes.
the matter of fact is the OT is still relevant. Demdike Stare guys still use it, and I can drop a host of 'real' names, while 'success' is someone's infantile dream, it's about good music and not success in the end.
OT lacks a hell lot, no question, but it still does a hell lot. it's outrageous noone did better yet, but then it's not just Elektron to blame, and not a reason to shit on the OT itself, especially w/o any argument to boot - 'nonsensical features' you said? rubbish, every feature there makes sense, we need more and not less. dated FX? correct, useable in some circumstances, but most of them are crap. horrible h/w I/O? bullshit, there's not enough outs, but what there is, not horrible by any means (go look at 1010music's diy level SQ, or any Eurorack now that's horrible). terrible UX? so subjective. I bought my first Octa the year it was out, and I still find it pretty logical and simple, not even mentioning the complexity it has to deal with (mk2 helped with most problematic UI moments).
so the point is to keep the perspective in your criticism. echo chambers are bad, question, but pointless bitching won't get us anywhere.
