  • This video is all about why you should make movies and why they're such a unique and great medium.
I'm looking to do these more slower paced videos with an emphasis on philosophical insights on the creative process, especially filmmaking. I hope you enjoy.

What are your thoughts about the medium of filmmaking generally? Let's start a conversation below!

I'm a 74 year old filmmaker/videographer/editor/composer/writer. When I graduated from high school, I wanted to be the next Hitchcock or Fellini. That was in 1968 - and Lucas and Spielberg beat me to it. But I wanted to make movies because it was an artform that combined sound/music/image/action/story.
This was in 1968. My only medium was 8mm. I had sound (of a sort) with a Bell and Howell system (synched cassette). But film was $5 - $10 a roll (processed), which would be around $60 today - for less than five minutes of footage. In 1990, I got a video camcorder and edited using two VCR decks (for third generation distribution copies).
Went to computer editing in 1998. Then I got a smart phone. The BEST movie camera I ever owned! Color. Sound. Full editing capabilities. And no cost other than the equipment.
What you are saying here is something I have tried to get across for years. Kids need only get their smart phone, a few friends, an editing program - and they are ready to go. I live in a small, very rural town in the middle of nowhere. So keep promoting this idea. I was hoping you would do a little film training (the 2001 jump cut is a great example). But I would love to see an internet university for kids, where they could share their attempts, victories, and near misses. I probably will never do it - but I would love to help any way I can.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment! It's crazy how video technology has changed over the decades. I consider myself extremely lucky not only to have access to affordable high quality cameras (even my phone is considerably better than any mini DV camera for example), and to be able to edit that footage with non-linear editing software on a computer.
I definitely intend to continue spreading the message that anyone can make a movie, even with very basic gear. Thanks for your support in this journey!

is that Letters To The Church by Francis Chan in the background?! anyway, love the video! personally, i think filmmaking is a fantastic medium for self-expression, mostly because the limits are theoretically endless, which means it can be whatever you want it to.
