Great tutorials, please make more detailed videos like this with a decent explanation. I've just started working at Prill Porsche here in England as a trainee, you've helped me a lot to expand my knowledge and to stop me sounding like such an idiot. Thank you!
Hello Ketan Congratulations on your new job at Prill Porsche! All this stuff is a bit tough to understand at times..patricularly in the beginning but If you stay with it..eventually it all makes sense I think you will do fantastic in you new occupation Best of Luck and Best Wishes!
I find it difficult to find information about the vacuum parts of the Porsche. I don't know if that is installed on the 1967. Can you think of a (maybe short) explanation in a video ? Or do you have a good source for info ?
Hi Remco I don’t think 67 had any vacuum plug ins. I think in 68 there was some kind of smog pump that required a vacuum module. Also early 70s has a vacuum Advance distributor I think but don’t know that much about it. Also possibly sportmatic transmission may of had the need there but I don’t know that much h about those transmissions
If you are going to the trouble of checking cam timing you need to find absolute top dead center with a degree wheel, sharp pointer, and something substantial installed into the spark plug hole to stop the piston in both directions, clockwise and anticlockwise. As the piston dwells, when at top dead center because of the crankshaft throw going over center, finding absolute top dead center is important. I have yet to see a z1 mark on a porsche engine that is accurate. The bigger the degree wheel the more accurate.
Hello George Yes you are certainly right! True TDC will have to be addressed in the real build up. Z1 is a good reference mark and okay for getting into the ball park but not reliable or predicable enough for perfect cam timing. Im pretty sure they had some kind of tooling at the factory when building these motors back in the day...not sure how they did it back then.. Z1 only just doesn't seem something the Germans would relay on. They deal only in perfection Thanks for Bringing this up!
Hello Gary Thanks Yes for sure..when we put the engine together on final assembly we will thuroughly go thru setting up rockers, valve lash gauges, finding tru TDC for a complete cam installation and set up. The idea behind this video was just to help with the understanding of how it works in general..It should help to compliment the real set up and save some long but necessary explanation on the process
Great video Mike explaining the engine strokes and what the valves are doing! I learned a bunch and I've done this! Are you considering buying the Stomski racing DigiDix digital TDC tool? Cheers. Kav. www.stomskiracing.com/products/digidix-sr095-m96-dfi
Hi Paul Thanks...Your cam timing timing video is great! Im hoping it helps out to compliment what you have done and also down the road to bring more clarity for guys who want to understand better when assembling the new motor. Thats funny you ask about the DigiDix! I actually called Steven Stomski and we talked quite deeply on TDC I found that to be the wild card with setting up cams. Z-1 to me just seemed a bit inaccurate and unpredictable after rotating several times..Im not sure at the moment how I will proceed but haven't ruled that out. His tool line up is amazing! I also bought the cam socket tool you recommend in your video! That thing is awesome! A must for the one guy shop!!!
Best lesson on cam timing ever found. Thank you!
Thank you mochung
You are very welcome Im glad it was helpful
Cheers!

Another great, informative video, Mike. Well done!
Thanks Dan
Its complicated but but when we go for the final time it should help tie everything together for a better understanding

Thanks Mike! Great video. Anyone attempting should watch this. Are you going to show how to setup the gauges on the actual rebuild?
