I watched an online talk in 2021 and Sarah Waters said she was working on a book set in the 1950s and it was a gothic family drama... but that was 3 years ago aha.
I have GOT to read more Sarah Waters. She's such an intriguing author. The Paying Guests was actually the first book of hers I read. I forgot it was so long because I devoured it!
Donna Tart was number one on my mental list during your intro! I really enjoy the audiobooks for TSH and The Goldfinch. I’ve not read The Little Friend yet, I was really apprehensive as reviews were saying it wasn’t as good.
I think it's just that The Secret History was much more tautly plotted so people were gutted when her next book was so slow moving. I still really enjoyed it.
I would be extatic for new books by Miriam Toews, Yaa Gyasi, and Linda Olsson. Many of my go-to authors have released books this year or the previous one, so I'm lucky😊! From your list, I have read and loved Song for Issey Bradley and The Little Friend.
I try not to anticipate new books. But i loved tayari jones silver sparrow, ive only read that and an americsn marriage by them, so still others to read but looking forward to the idea of more ocming out.
This was such a great video idea! I have so many books to read that I haven't allowed myself to get excited about new releases. However I do wonder from time to time if Gillian Flynn will publish another novel. Thank you for all these great recommendations ❤
Maria McCann! Her first book, As Meat Loves Salt, is one of my all-time favorites, and her others are great too. She's another author who takes long periods between books.
I’m obsessed with reading anything by Birmingham authors. I feel that, for our size, we are a much maligned or ignored part of the county, so I still get a little buzz when I see somewhere I recognise in print. Therefore, I’m always on the lookout for a new Kit de Waal or Catherine O’Flynn.
I loved My Name is Leon but didn't enjoy The Trick to Time quite as much. I'll definitely still pick up whatever she brings out next. I haven't read any Catherine O'Flynn. It looks like she has a few books so which would you recommend to start with?
Great video! I had somehow forgotten about English Animals over the years and this made me want to reread it. The author I’m eagerly awaiting a new novel from is Emily Ruskovich. I remember when she won that really big Irish book prize a few years ago that she said in an interview then that she had one in the works and it sounded really good. But I haven't heard anything about it since
Ohhh, yes! No Idea how I missed Emily Ruskovich! I loved Idaho and always look to see if she has a new book out. In the meantime I need to reread Idaho.
Before watching your video, I immediately thought of Donna Tartt😂....must check out Sarah Waters. Would love some new releases from classic russian literature, sadly these guys are long dead😅. I still have german writer Rocko Schamoni, who has new stuff ready every couple of years or so😊. His books have not been translated as far as I know...a pity
What a great video! I loved many of the books (and authors) you featured, including Donna Tartt, English Animals, A Place For Us, Carys Bray’s books (but i haven’t yet read When the Lights Go Out), Good Talk, Tayari Jones…and I’ll plan to pick up several others you mentioned. I have never read Sarah Waters and I currently have Fingersmith and The Little Stranger out from the library. I hope to get to one by the end of the year! I loved Red Clocks by Leni Zumas years ago and I’ve been waiting and waiting to hear that she’s come out with something new. I’m also a huge Gillian Flynn fan, and I excitedly anticipate the day she releases a new book!
We have similar reading taste then :) Sarah Waters is perfect for the cosier, darker months so I'd definitely pick one up soon if you live in the northern hemisphere. I really enjoyed Red Clocks too :)
Loved Sarah Waters and Cary’s Bray, but wasn’t as keen on either one’s last book, I definitely want more from both. Also the rumours the Robin Hobb is writing a new book with Bee as the main character.
That's a shame. Hopefully their next books work more for you. Hmmm, I did wonder if Robin Hobb would do that. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it as I didn't love the last trilogy even through I adore Fitz. I found them very repetitive like she didn't trust us as readers at all.
I've had 'When the Lights go out' on my shelf since it came out because I don't want to not have a Carys Bray book to read! Maybe I should read it now , if it's set at Christmas and she's releasing another one!
I'm so happy your favourite Sarah Waters book is The Little Stranger, it's mine too, a lot of people seem to like it the least. It would be great to have a new book from her but she's set a high bar for herself and perhaps the creative juices don't flow as they used to? I've never read The Secret History, it's been on my TBR list for ages, as have The Goldfinch and The Little Friend. I'm in a bit of a reading slump at tgevmonent, triggered by Kate Atkinson's Death at the Sign of the Rook, which after a promising start became a real slog to get through.
Yes, I prefer her books set in the 20th century but I know most people prefer her victorian novels. Yeah, the pressure must be so high for her! Urgh, I hate when a book becomes a slog after starting off strong!
I am so hoping we get a new Sarah Waters soon 😩 But anyway I just finished a book called Sipsworth and it's very quiet and cozy and I think you might really like it! ❤
As soon as I saw the title I KNEW Donna would be making an appearance 😂 Someone commented on one of my videos a while ago saying that rumour was that she is nowhere near having a new book finished. So I think we might still have a lot of waiting ahead of us 😭
I'm still waiting for more books from Swedish author Eli Levén in a language I can read🙈😥 Plus more graphic novels from Nino Bulling - I feel like you, too, might enjoy their work "firebugs"
Authors I’d love to see a new book from. Liz Moore ( unfair I know as A God In The Woods only came out this year) Stephen Markley ( loved Ohio and Deluge) Maggie O’Farrell Jane Harper ( love reading Australian crime fiction in winter)
Patrick Ruthfoss. His first two were awesome but sadly I'm not convinced the third will ever make an appearance. I'm not even that interested in the genre, but i thought these books were top notch.
I watched an online talk in 2021 and Sarah Waters said she was working on a book set in the 1950s and it was a gothic family drama... but that was 3 years ago aha.
Ohhhhh, that sounds amazing 😍
I have GOT to read more Sarah Waters. She's such an intriguing author. The Paying Guests was actually the first book of hers I read. I forgot it was so long because I devoured it!
I highly recommend all her books. They're just so well crafted.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) It was a fun list to work on.

@ What Was Lost was the one that won the awards, but my favourite is Mr Lynch’s Holiday. They’re all great though, you can’t go wrong.

I think about a new Donna Tartt and Sarah Waters book probably three times a week!
Hahahahaha, I definitely do for Sarah Waters too!

I need more Sarah Waters!!!! But when she does release a new book I think the excitement might be too much for me 🙈
What a great video! Donna Tartt for sure owes us a book
I've had 'When the Lights go out' on my shelf since it came out because I don't want to not have a Carys Bray book to read! Maybe I should read it now , if it's set at Christmas and she's releasing another one!
I don't think she has a new book announced yet but I'd definitely recommend reading Whene the Lights Go Out near Christmas still.
I'm so happy your favourite Sarah Waters book is The Little Stranger, it's mine too, a lot of people seem to like it the least. David Mitchell has been quiet for five years, there is a rumor he is releasing a book in 2025
I wait for him too
So excited about chimamanda Adichie’s new release
I am so hoping we get a new Sarah Waters soon 😩 But anyway I just finished a book called Sipsworth and it's very quiet and cozy and I think you might really like it! ❤
Thanks for the recommendation - it does sound very cosy :)
Sarah Waters was talking about a book she was working on, but nothing so far.......this was a few years after her last one came out.
Hi Mercedes, I was wondering if you were planning on reading the new Sally Rooney 😊
I did try it and gave up after about 30 pages 😂
Laura Kaye's website says her second novel Star Fish "will be competed in 2024." so hopefully it's coming down the pike!
Ohhh, this is very exciting news. Thanks for letting me know 😀
Everytime you say "rereading" I think of another book I could reread. Dangerous game :D
More please from Curtis Sittenfeld and Taylor Jenkins Reid!
Love Curtis Sittenfeld
As soon as I saw the title I KNEW Donna would be making an appearance 😂
Someone commented on one of my videos a while ago saying that rumour was that she is nowhere near having a new book finished. So I think we might still have a lot of waiting ahead of us 😭
Booooooo!!!! Each book has been longer than the previous one so maybe that's why this one is taking so long!
I only heard about Sarah Waters because she did a blurb for a book I read now
Yes, she blurbs lots of books!
I'm still waiting for more books from Swedish author Eli Levén in a language I can read🙈😥
Plus more graphic novels from Nino Bulling - I feel like you, too, might enjoy their work "firebugs"
Ohh, thanks for the graphic novel recommendation :)
Authors I’d love to see a new book from.
Liz Moore ( unfair I know as A God In The Woods only came out this year)
Stephen Markley ( loved Ohio and Deluge)
Maggie O’Farrell
Jane Harper ( love reading Australian crime fiction in winter)
Patrick Ruthfoss. His first two were awesome but sadly I'm not convinced the third will ever make an appearance. I'm not even that interested in the genre, but i thought these books were top notch.
Yes, with him and George R Martin it feels like the next books in the series will never come out!
Sort of unrelated but a companion collection to What My Mother and I Don't Talk About is coming in 2025: What My Father and I Don't Talk About.
Thanks so much for letting me know! I'll definitely be picking that up :)
