    Interesting. I have the LTM aspherical that you start talking about at 11:28. I didn't realize that it's different from the version I. Great lens!

    Good lens, one remark, when you have to shoot a bit "closed" to get better results, I don't see that as a f/1.5 lens. Even though you can ignore it. The classical Leica/Zeiss stuff costs a lot, because of this. As far as price, versions and size/weight you can't beat it. I still prefer my 50mm 1956 Summilux though that comes in retail at 1.500 Eur of course. Very good video Matt !!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Eric! Agreed, there is no point buying a 1.5 lens if you have to use it at f2 (Just buy a cheaper smaller f2 lens)(normally)(not in this case). This lens is excellent wide open from about 2m but I didn't realise that til I sent it back and that only equated to about 1% of my images. (As you know lenses with a floated element are better up close, like the Summilux ASPH).

Thanks to your review I sought out and was lucky to find one of the earlier Voigtlander f1.5 ASPH lenses -- the one you liken more to a Summilux look -- for about half the cost of a the new lens and am very happy with it!

    Matt, always like how you break down the information for each lens. I believe you gave a bit of wrong information about the original Nokton LTM (the one you saw at Flint and sold for $4K) - it is actually from the 1950s. Not many people know about this lens. I happened to know because I recently got a Voigtlander Prominent camera with the original Nokton. To clear things up, there are a total of 4 versions of Nokton 50/1.5 throughout the history: (1) the original Nokton (7 elements in 5 groups, "7/5", of course no aspherical element) - made for Voigtlander Prominent cameras introduced in 1951 and was considered the sharpest fast 50mm for about a decade (well, the main competitors Leica Summarit and Zeiss Sonnar aren't exactly famous for resolution). Voigtlander also made a few in Contax RF and LTM mount in very low quantity. While you could get a Prominent mount version for under $800, the LTM version (the one you saw at Flint) usually sells for a few grands. The Prominent version doesn't have focus mechanism because focusing is done through the camera, while the LTM version has a focus ring. (2) Nokton Aspherical by CV in both Nikon S mount and LTM (6/5 optics with, I am not sure, 1 or 2 aspherical element). The LTM version looks similarly to Nikon S version and they both have red "aspherical" engraving in the front. The LTM version should sell for under $600. (3) Nokton Aspherical VM by CV ("Version I" as you and many refer as, 6/5 optics with 1 aspherical element). To make things more confusing, CV decided to base its exterior design on the original LTM Nokton (1950s) and make them sound like reissues, while the optics are in fact very different. (4) Nokton Aspherical VM "II" by CV - the one you review here. Hopefully this helps anyone who wants to know a bit of the Nokton history. BTW I have some photos of the Prominent Nokon on my instagram if you are interested.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks and sorry for confusing the older models. I own the LTM + Nikon S and yes they are the same. I don't have the Prominent version but may have shown it in one of my Flints videos in the past. (Great guys at Flints!). Thanks for the details for others to read, much appreciated.

    After watching your video, I came to know about the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II MC. I would love the MC version. I am focused on backpacking. In the US, I would drive to a location and then pack a backpack into a location for a travel shoot. If I go abroad and take a plane to another country, I also backpack. Therefore, I will pay great attention to the volume and weight of the camera system. For this reason, I am going to switch to the Leica system. A lens like the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II MC was exactly what I was looking for. However, what I need is a camera 'system'. This photographic system includes cameras, lenses, accessories, and, of course, computers and software. For backpacking, it's a total system. So, if I could use an iPad, I wouldn't choose an apple Mcbook Pro computer. If I could use an iPhone, I wouldn't choose an iPad. Here are my thoughts on reducing the bulk and weight of backpacking items.
    I also watched videos of the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II MC taken by others. I saw that they said the vignetting was worse with this lens. In order to adjust the vignetting in the software, it seems that the iPhone can't do the job. I have to use an iPad. In other words, when I picked this lens, what I actually needed was a Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II MC + iPad. If so, the volume and weight are huge.
    For me, it is my choice to carry only a iPhone, camera, and lens to complete the task of travel shooting, without carrying an iPad or a Mcbook pro computer.
    How can I solve the serious problem of vignetting of the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II MC using only the iPhone?
    Than you very much!

      Great to hear you like to travel light too. It’s always a compromise. There are smaller 50s and lighter 50s. This is a good all rounder. Stop the lens down for less vignetting.

    I have this lens, and I did find a slight focus shift. That might explain the lack of sharpness at 0.7 m. (I.e. it was ever so slightly out of focus)

      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the info. I was using EVF cameras too (SL and CL) so that shouldn't matter I think. I still like the lens and looking back at my CL images some look sharp. I can't remember if they were at f2. I do love the size. (See next video I mention it)

    Interesting. But I know the reason why the Summilux has a better performance on short distances. Peter Karbe (the chief of lens construction at Leica) included the floating element exactly for that reason. But I know that the current Summilux is very expensive! But you will found floating elements only on more expensive lenses.

      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alexander, yes 100% correct re the floating element. Sorry I should have mentioned that in the video. I didn't notice how good the lens was at mid distance until after I returned it as I shoot everything up close!

    Nice! I have the LTM (with M adapter) 50 1.5 Aspherical, and it is probably my favorite 50mm; I used to also have the 1.1, but it is heavy and bulky (although now it would work fine on the SL!), so I sold it.

    Own a Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 Nokton lens for my Leica M3. And it does not look like your examples. Maybe my chrome/all metal lens is made differently than your examples. Think when you mention so many lenses (Leitz or Voigtlander) the video comes across as confusing than clarifying. As you get into your explanation, your results/sharpness differs from my experience.
