🇵🇱 Zagórz - Ruiny Klasztoru Karmelitów Bosych / Ruins of the monastery in Zagórz Poland🌍

On the hill above the Osława, called Marymont, there are the ruins of the fortified monastery of the Discalced Carmelites, founded by Jan Franciszek Stadnicki. The complex, surrounded by a fortified wall, was built at the beginning of the 18th century. The monks came to Zagórze in 1714. The monastery church (initially called the Visitation, later the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) was built in the baroque style. In 1772 the Bar Confederates defended themselves against the Russian army. On November 26, 1822 a fire completely destroyed the roof of the monastery and the church, and seven years later the convent was closed. At the end of the 20th century, the renovation of the building began, and the monastery became a tourist attraction in Zagórze. A viewing point was set up on the tower, a monastery garden was built, the area around the monastery was tidied up, the facade of the temple and the defensive wall were restored. There are many legends connected with the monastery in Zagórze, it has also found its place in the literature of, among others, in the novel by Zygmunt Kaczkowski "The Tomb of Nieczui".
