Fantastic memories. Get that giddy feeling all over again at the thought of what you might see, an smell.

I was in the East Midlands growing up spotting, it was an absolute joy when we took trips to Bristol behind a class 50 off New Street.

At 9.12, you have my grandad walking down the platform. That was his local station. Spent many days myself with him on that platform. Great video.

Absolutely a top notch piece of film. I remember travelling from London, to spend the day at Bristol Temple Meads in the mid eighties. It was such an adventure, and the furthest I had been away on my own. It was a memorable/ wonderful time observing the locomotive power of the day. It saddens me that most of these fantastic machines have long been scrapped, minus a handful in private ownership, or preservation societies.
Thank you. (👍👍👍) . I always look forward to your uploads.

This is an interesting video and there are some things that take me back. 1.Station announcements by a human being, 2. Guards vans on goods trains, 3. The old BR livery. Interesting to see that there is a transition on the Intercity trains with nearly all of the locomotives in the newer livery with the red stripe and the carriages being a mixture of the newer and the older blue and white BR colours. All of the trains were slam doors and there is a man leaning out of the window reading his paper. I can't remember why some of the carriages were painted all over in the same darker blue as the locomotives.

Mixed livery on trains really boils my **** haha. FGW and GWR had the situation for ages where this happened on their HST sets and some DMU rakes . . . . ugh.

    Blimey, what a great video.
I'd been 7 for 3 weeks when that was filmed! Little did I know then that 20-odd yrs later I'd be walking over the bridge in that video on the way to work.
Absolutely fascinating view of what a major station looked like back then *especially* with the Class 8 (?) shunter and the brake-van in the rake.
Have been lucky to see a Class 20 and a Class 47 at BTM on heritage duties a couple of times and if you're in the area, wander over to Temple Quay and there's a siding where Network Rail often stable their rail survey trains so you get a range of stuff in there. Seen a number of different Class 37s and they've got a Departmental DMU there at times too.
And on a lighter note, remember this: Bristol Temple Meads, Gateway to Bedminster ;-)

One thing that caught my attention about the HST at the beginning of the video at 1.08. This train appears to have only one coach of 1st class accommodation. The seating half of coach 2, the catering coach, immediately next to the 1st class coach appears to be 2nd class due to lack of the yellow line but the other half of this coach containing the kitchen and buffet counter has both a red line indicating that it is the buffet car AND a yellow line indicating that this end of the coach is 1st class.

@@spompey I think you may have missed my point. I have never seen a double line (yellow and red) before, one or the other but not both one on top of the other, and obviously the buffet counter is not 1st class.

Very different now, most of the HST’s are gone, Bath road depot is gone, the Royal Mail depot and the conveyor is gone, and the electricity never arrived! It’s not the same atmosphere now, without the parcel trucks to sit on and eat your lunch 🥪🙁
