Most people in Richmond don’t care about NASCAR at all.
There are a ton of inaccuracies in this video too. All but one Confederate statues on Monument Ave has been taken down. There’s a court battle on that one. But plenty of people in Richmond don’t like the Confederate statues. Even the Monument Ave Association came out for taking them down.
Also, considering tourism in Richmond an issue is pretty laughable. I’ve lived in a lot of cities in my life and Richmond is the least touristy of any where I’ve lived or spent much time.
The allergies are the only real issue that’s on your list.

I can't agree with the tourism part, I've lived here all my life, u do understand we are the festival capital of America, b4 the pandemic, it was jumping here, from early spring to late summer there's at least 2 to 3 festivals a week, also we have reshaped how we make money, we have at least 30 to 40 breweries in the Richmond area. Almost more than any other city. Always something to do here on top of us having shockoe bottom

I live in Richmond Virginia born and raised. It's not the best place on Earth, but it's certainly not the worst. Bad drivers, homelessness and poverty concerns, potholes, the confederacy, the public schools are subpar, and seasonal allergies, all of these are true. This is home, good or bad, it's home. One thing I love about Richmond is it is central to all kinds of great stuff, the beach, the mountains, and DC, all within a 2 hour drive.

One problem with Richmond is that you can go from a good neighborhood to a bad one in a block. I actually find drivers there better than drivers in Charlottesville. I live two hours from Richmond and an hour from Charlottesville. At one point I drove in both daily and in Charlottesville I’ve had to run a red light to keep from getting hit in the back end. Those people don’t know what a red light means. After I suffered vision loss and had to spend time at the center for the blind in Richmond, I found the folks there to be very accommodating and helpful to those in the blind community. Richmond is one of my favorite places.

I have lived in Richmond for over 30 years. A lot of the stuff in the video is completely wrong:
    10. Literally nobody cares about NASCAR around here, so that shouldn't even be on the list. The NASCAR fans are all coming from rural areas in Virginia far away from Richmond city.
    9. Bad drivers? They aren't any worse here than in any other city I've ever been in. This shouldn't be on the list. Also traffic is almost non-existent here compared to places like DC.
    8. Poverty IS a big problem in Richmond, this one is absolutely correct. Homelessness is also a big problem. We have like the highest eviction rate in the country.
    7. The taxes here are not a problem, especially compared to other places, this again is something that shouldn't even be on this list
    6. Yes, the roads are TOTAL CRAP, ask anyone here and they will tell you that. Also public transit is a joke here, almost non-existent
5 Tourism? Are you joking? There is little-to-no tourism in Richmond whatsoever. I never see any tourists when I go around the city, about 95% of people here are locals. Now go to DC or Virginia Beach, and that's a completely different story. There are literal mobs of tourists everywhere.
    4. Yes, there is a lot of Confederacy stuff here, but as of 2020, we are "dealing with it". So don't throw us under the bus on that one.
    3. Yep the schools in Richmond city suck and I don't think anyone will dispute with you on that one. The schools in the suburbs are a completely different story though.
    2. Nuclear power plants? Really? This is a really ODD thing to put on a list like this. Should no one move to France? Because I'm pretty sure they have tons of nuclear plants everywhere. Why is this even on the list? WTF?
    1. Allergies. I personally don't have them, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if it's really bad here.
Bro, it sounds like you have NEVER even been to Richmond or actually talked to anyone who has ever lived here for any significant length of time. Next time you do a video like this, try to actually talk to people from that area you are doing the video about. They will definitely tell you what the problems are about that particular area. Check out a reddit like "RVA" where you can actually talk to people who live in Richmond and ask them questions.

Still an accurate report, and not necessarily meant harmfully. Some of us are just fine with car racing popularity, some aren't. Briggs said from the begining that it was a challenge to find those 10 items. That means that Richmond is just fine for most people. Expecially conservative white people, which is most of the southern US. Any unhappy people living anywhere in the south should give California a try. my 2 cents, lived in rva and surrounding for 55 years with 1 in nyc. Out of 72 odd jobs, am an artist from vcu and a dozen voli jobs; here goes:
    1. never have I had anyone bother me with nascar, if you live near the track, you may be bothered or rent out your front and back yards for parking and supp your income.
    2. bad drivers- yeah, drove limos, taxis, delivery, ambulances and many reps and techs all over state- many distracted drivers so keep head on swivel and stay in right lane for a peaceful drive. nyc and dc seem worse though.
3.poverty, yeah. remnants of systemic redlining and isolated low socio economic public housing. meals on wheels, male- got public housing run 2 years, city 911 system as emt, many medical clients released from hospital late at night, delivered ac units for non profit - you will find very kind elderly and young scared to go out at night. the criminals go there to commit crimes. Should be slowly evaced to other areas and then zoned for business.
murder per capita is 28 per 100k, that is the same as chicago, so do be aware.
pd is diverse and progressive, save jumping the gun on rumors of a mass shooting or cs gas being released due to confusion. 911 system status management means there are always 2 underpaid, overworked red headed step emts in an ambulance at the center of the city to first respond if need arises; if they are not on a pt transfer. What wonderful dedicated people no one cares about till they need them, just like lawyers; well, lawyers that work pro bono .
pay has increased, I wonder if burnout has decreased.
4.taxes, yep meals cost more but having worked in a dozen restaurants around and in city, no one really cares. You might hit a taco bell down the street over the city line though.
5.bad roads- potholes are bad, maintenance does suffer, it is a money thing though. state tax system is regressive, not progressive.
6.tourism, many hospitality jobs, never once even thought about it, the more the merrier after all, va is for lovers.
    7. cap of conv.- only a few care. the statues are gone, if you do not show both sides for historical context, then so long statues. rva is 50% black and 50% wht/hisp/asian etc; so the majority were happy for the change. yeah, progress. monument should put work out centers where statues were, it is a great jogging route.
8.schools- teachers great and maintenance not. fox elementary, where the rich in the fan send their offspring before private schools had 200 safety violations and a non working fire alarm before it burned down. what a cluster- the mayor and school system fight over who is in charge of building new schools that should have been built decades ago, because one costs more than the other.
    9. nuclear plants , never heard any horns. 2 big ones are far enough away not to worry about regarding fallout, will have to look into the other two he mentioned. train tracks go through rva, hopefully they are careful with what they haul, have never heard of any issues.
10 allergies are bad, they bring the lush flowers and grass that make rva so beautiful.
    that was fun.
Forgot to mention all the art shows, and events on belle, mayo and browns island. Always something to do; and beach, dc,, and mountains under 2 hours away.

Just moved out of this city this past week. It has only gone downhill in the past two years in my opinion. My parents loved it, but most of my life it has been a dump. Also, schools are horrible. I went on a tour of a juvenile detention center in Richmond back in middle school and it legitimately looked nicer than some of the schools there. I remember going to one school for a test and there were metal detectors everywhere, but the windows were cracked and in disrepair. And my experience with education is awful. The 14:1 ratio is skewed because schools have staggering differences. You have some schools where the "gifted" kids go with ratios of 8:1 but other schools where all of the "normal" kids with ratios like 35:1.

I used to live near George Wythe high school, and it was THE WORST! On top of people getting shot near my house all the time, high school students broke into my house a couple of times while I was at work. Had my car broken into, probably by the same students that robbed my house. They used to spend the school day walking around the neighborhood terrorizing it instead of going to school, and neither the school or police would do anything about it other than take police reports after the damage was already done. I think it's gotten better ever since those two kids got shot in the parking lot -- after the community around the school spoke out about how we all knew this was only a matter of time before something like this happened. There was literally no accountability; the kids came and went as they pleased and answered to no one. Probably why the felt entitled to terrorize the community.
There were plenty of times that the high school kids were shooting guns in the woods behind my house, which was terrifying, but nobody ever did anything about it.
If you drive by George Wythe HS at night, it looks like something out of a horror movie. Especially with the metal detectors blinking in the darkness. I've never felt a sense of relief like I felt when I pulled my U-Haul away from that house for the last time. Never again!!!!
You absolutely must be careful and choose a place here that is at a minimum several blocks away from the bad parts of town. It changes really fast here -- sometimes within a block. Turns out the third worst projects in Richmond are across the street from George Wythe HS, which offered the community a constant supply of daily shootings and SWAT team activity.
Best just to avoid North, South, and East Richmond if you value your safety 😭

#1 should be the heat and humidity. The allergy thing is legit. The city itself has been poorly run for about 50 years - the tourism, manufacturing, and banking presences have kept it more or less prosperous despite that. Don't know where you get your school data. The suburban school districts are perceived to be head and shoulders above the city schools. City residents with money send kids to private schools. Real estate is over-priced - like many cities on both coasts - just not as badly. There are many places more livable than here.

Right to work states basically give permission to employers to treat everyone like shit. 4. Minimum wage is $7.50. You want enough money to support yourself? NOT HERE!!!! 5. Good luck finding a job, in general. 6. Definitely shitty drivers here!! Avoid 95... any Wawas........ if the road is slightly covered in "snow" THE WORLD HAS ENDED 7. Went to VCU. Should I bring up gentrification here? Or should I talk about how higher education is a scam? Whichever. 8. Gotta love living in a "historic" city. Racism is everywhere. And everything related to the confederacy is GLORIFIED. 9. THE WEATHER!!!!!! Hot and humid in the summer. In the fall, it is literally 40 degrees one day and 80 the next. The holidays are mild. But basically two winters. One in November and one in March. 10. Allergies. I get a sinus infection every season. without fail. sometimes more. yes, I take allergy medicine. all year.

Richmond HAD civil war generals statues. I was an Art students at VCU in Richmond years ago and appreciated the history and culture and over all look of most of the city built through the years. You could learn and think of the struggles that the city and our nation had endured through the years and how it had grown for the better. Outsiders descended upon, agitated and destroyed Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA. Leaders like Northam and Stoney allowed it to happen. Monument Avenue is or was an attraction that would bring in tourist dollars. That hurt Richmond along with the other vandalism and crime that was brought to the city which already was struggling. History is a draw for people. I do not believe most people that would visit and view Monument Avenue were racist. Everything today is racist. SMH

    • @matthewmajestic1013
      @matthewmajestic1013 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thegefster1988 I would personally recommend moving both Chesterfield or Henrico!, they are both solid places to live overall compared to the city of Richmond. In general the cost of living is going to be cheaper mostly in regards to what your money can buy you for a land/home and rent can be cheaper in some areas of chesterfield and henrico county. Chesterfield is a rather big county it has areas where the upper middle class reside like Midlothian going west bound on Midlothian Turnpike and then as you go east bound near the city limits of Richmond you get into the lower middle class areas poverty, lack of solid paying jobs, roads, and lack of community is evident. But as for schools both Henrico and Chesterfield have pretty good schools public and private and I went to 2 middle schools and graduated from one in chesterfield, and personally I really liked my experience. As we all know virtually any place has its negatives but overall chesterfield is pretty safe for families, and if you live on or near the Midlothian area we have both the State police and county police offices right on the main drag!. One more thing as for traffic Midlothian sees a good bit of it mostly because the proximity to the city limits of Richmond and Chippenham Park way is a highway that can bring you into Richmond and I-95 runs North and south so during the morning from 7-10 at the latest there’s a fair bit of traffic but in the evening from 4-7 it can be bumper to bumper and if there’s an accident well you know how that goes. Oh I-64 runs east and west which can take you to places like Williamsburg, Newport News, James city county etc.

I lived in and around Richmond for 10 years. Reasons of homelessness,: 1)A minimum wage area 2) Jobs only sustain you for 6 months a year 3) They still believe in slavery, so the previous 2 conditions will never go away.
Housing: Anywhere you live in or around Richmond, you will only be a few blocks to, at most, 2 miles from an active railway. Nothing like those troop trains that only travel at night coming though and blaring their horns at the unguarded crossings which are many because no one wants to pay for train gates. Nuclear Not only do you have to worry about the plants, but with all the military stations in the area, there are a lot of nuclear weapons. Heck, there is even a navel station where they store, arm and deploy the nuclear weapons. In 2007, Virginia introduced the $3550 traffic ticket but only for residents.

As a long time resident I can confirm the roads suck and the schools are bad as well - despite above average cost per student. Driving is a little weird particularly if you come from a big city. What’s hard to discern is how much is ascribed to the City itself vs the Metro area which is 80+% of “Richmond”. Most of the negatives, taxes, poverty, roads and schools apply to the City not the surrounding counties. For every negative however there are two positives. Culture, diverse stable economy, lower cost of living than equivalent places elsewhere, recreational facilities (white water rafting through downtown etc) and geographic location - two hours from the Beach, DC or the mountains. More “hipster” than Portland LOL.

Mr. Briggs, as a life long Richmond, Va. resident, and as someone that knows the city very intimately, I take exception to your manufactured, petty and, well frankly, bogus review of Richmond.
I work with many new Richmond residents, and almost tell me what a wonderful place it is to live. While we do have our " allergy season " in April and May, the rest of the year is terrific. The cost of housing is very reasonable, there are very few homeless on the streets, the " race season " you noted is only a few days a year and in an isolated part of the city. The roads are well paved, contrary to your report, and because of a well designed interstate and local road system, we have almost no traffic jams. Richmond was recently voted as one of the top " foodie cities," and with singularly unique area's such as Churchill, CaryTowne, Shockoe Bottom, Scott's Addition, Maymont Park, Brown's Island and The Fan, it is an interesting place to live, also. There's also VCU, a 17 acre university in the heart of the city, Virginia Museum, and beautiful Monument Avenue, which, until recently, housed the Civil War statues. BYW, no one in Richmond touts the Civil War as our heritage, it happened over 150 years ago, so we have all moved on. I have traveled to over 32 countries and been to most of our states, however, it's always nice to come back home to Richmond.

Chances are, none of you live in Richmond. You can always tell when you got some outside, inbred, hillbillies commenting on what’s going on in our city as if they know anything other than what they see on Facebook.

Living in Richmond for nearly 15 years, I’d somewhat disagree with the notion of having exceptionally bad drivers. I mean there’s bad drivers everywhere you go so everyone will have a reason to say there’s awful driving in their town, but if your well traveled at all it really doesn’t compare to driving habits in other cities like Baltimore, DC, New York, etc (I mean it’s nothing like those types of places where you get cut off by someone crossing 4 lanes or passed with a just few inches between you and the bumper of someone in front of you going 55mph). I mean Richmond’s driving isn’t perfect, but I definitely wouldn’t classify that as a top drawback for the city..
Also, people don’t respect bike lanes? Come on man - that one you need to visit here or do a better fact check for - half of our city streets are bike lanes and nobody cares because the majority of the bicyclist never use the f*ing lanes that we’ve put everywhere all over the city for them! The bikes just ride right through traffic (provided they aren’t skipping the sidewalk for once in a blue moon) - not stopping for a single stop sign - and sign to you like your the j/a for getting in their way after nearly cause you to have a collision b/c they weren’t paying attention or courteous enough to look both ways in the first place. Coming from a biker - and NOT a typical driver - the bicycle community is the one that doesn’t respect the drivers - not the other way around!

If you think traffic and drivers are bad in Richmond, you’ve never been in NoVa on the beltway during rush hour, or ever. Also, if you look at the City vs the Counties, that’s where you really see the poverty vs. wealth. And our roads are so bad, so bad. This is accurate.
And schools in the Counties aren’t too bad but many of the city schools are struggling or failing.

I remembered Richmond. That city population same size as Rochester, NY. The last time, I was there including Kings Dominion in 1982 before returning to Texas. And my old friend who got divorced and moved to Richmond from Georgia. ( she grew up in Maryland) She had lot of frustrating life there and, I had to send her some money for a while.

It’s an okay city to be in a Mid-Atlantic state. As a local, most of us (including myself don’t want those confederate statues up-most have come down recently thank goodness). We’re not southern either. I don’t even consider myself as a southerner. Compare Richmond to Charleston or even Asheville. We’re more like Baltimore, hence Mid-Atlantic and above the 36th parallel.

Richmond not Southern? LOL. So Richmond is like Delaware or NJ? I lived there more recently and the people didn't act like the folks I know back home. Different culture. Richmond isn't the deep South, but it's Southern.

I was raised in Richmond and I can tell you it's horrible.
They just got audited and it came out the managers and grass people aren't doing their jobs, literally. Now they are getting a fat raise for it. The employees are getting a middle finger and that's it.
The place is just miserable and year after year the stupidity and disappointment the sheer bull shit just gets worse. The managers get worse and paid more. The employees are beaten down all the time. It's the worst working place you can be caught in. Some decisions haven't heard of any complaints. City hall, horrible working situations turned everyone into volatile and angry people all the time.
The taxes have any rocketed because of the statue removals, loss of revenue due to incompitant mayor and riots including beating the restraints over the head with 14 different taxes. The restaurants didn't make The price The city did by adding 14 different taxes and they add more all The time. The reason the poverty is high is because the individuals get free everything and deal drugs on top of it to get paid more than the city workers inside city hall. Free food, free, rent, free clothes, free everything. The mayor neglected the most traveled streets and actually didn't have a clue about nothing. The city had a popular lie, the 5 year program. Well that 5 year program to have all the roads done was 15 years ago. Budget problems, the reward outrageous incompitance in management and punish the employee. Your looking money because the wrong ones are being punished, a crack head can figure it out while they are stoned on crack. The place will soon go to ruin and run every business and family out of it. It will become another Norfolk where they are scheming anything to make any kind of money charging make believe fines based on made up codes and made up rules. It once was an ok now it's a pile of shit next to a toilet because management didn't know what a toilet looked like.
Schools HAHA No no no the professors have absolutely no concept of real world engagement from finance to public interaction. Talk to one that's not in a core subject like engineering, medicine, and business; you will be stunned by the ignorance and they can't be fired. The arrogance is huge.
Allergies? Nah, it's your subconscious crying just don't realise it. Freshmen girls are hunted by drug dealers, they are pressured, they get addicted, and they become prostitutes on broad street and south side. Happens all the time every time especially the white girls. City of richmond is a freak show ran by the freaks that are suppose to be shown.

I live in Virginia but not Richmond. I do call Richmond my favorite Virginia city but not enough to where I want to live there. I've walked Monument Avenue and seen those great statues, been to Hollywood Cemetery which has the graves of three American presidents and the graves of Confederate soldiers, I've been to the Virginia War Memorial which honors Virginians who died fighting America's wars. And there is the Edgar Allen Poe Museum that I want to visit. Richmond is a beautiful old city and it does sadden me what the elected officials there are doing to that city. There is much more about Richmond but I can't list it all here. I think I said plenty.

Monuments and statues like Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson were turned into black statues with graffiti and curse words.
