Oooooh, a child of the '70s, how lucky for me. Also lucky -- the singer (lead and harmonies) of the theme song/credits song is one of my uncles, a legendary studio singer, John Bahler (he and his brother Tom were ALL OVER radio and TV in the '60s and '70s, they were among the vocal Wrecking Crew that recorded with EVERYbody)... I always loved that I had a remote connection to the fabulous world of Sid & Marty Krofft. Anyway, hearing/watching it again brings back so many memories. I oughta give him a call.

No serialized arcs back then. The theme condensed the show's setup "how did we get here" as compactly as possible, and without saying the obvious about lsd trips. Whether or not the oft-told claim is true, the end result is still genius.

I used to watch this program when I was around nine years old. Everytime that I saw and heard the scene of him falling down the hat I would get a very deep and bad feeling. At that age I already had a level of discernment. Example: Around that same time Janis Joplin's song " Bobby McGee " was often played on the radio. I would feel and envision a little girl trapped in a dark hole crying for help.

Has anyone ever realized Lidsville and H.R. Puffinstuff were modern take-offs on the Wizard Of Oz? Teen lost in a strange world , not their own. Helped by good characters who keep them safe from bad ones, ie: witch/worlock, trying to get home. Jimmy had the magic flute the witch wanted and Dorthey had the ruby slippers the witch wanted. Mark had the genie HooDoo wanted?
    L. Frank Baum would be honored.

I just watched the first episode of Pufnstuf today, the first I've ever seen of the show, and it was immediately clear that nearly everything was a parallel to the Wizard of Oz -- character in strange land, trying to get home, talking trees, wicked witch in a big castle who has guards and sends out her bat on missions like the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz. Some of the witch's lines are almost verbatim from the Wizard of Oz, too. Magic Flute is the Ruby Slippers.

Dorothy wasn't even ten years old in the original novel. Only the movies make people think "teenager" and the nonsensical story works a lot better with a younger child, much like Alice In Wonderland. Work better here too, but younger child actors are notoriously hard to direct.

That’s because both Pufnstuf and Lidsville were influenced by the Wizard of Oz, Lidsville was also inspired by Alice in Wonderland Sid Krofft saw The Wizard of Oz movie when he was 9/10 years old in theaters when it came out, he said that was the movie to inspire him to go into show business

I don't know, the vampire hat is really stretching the core concept a little too far. I can't think of a single vampire in fiction whose look included a signature piece of headgear. Even the asinine sparkly variety goes about bare-headed.

Grew up on Sid & Marty Krofft, understood their campiness.
HR Puffenstuff and Lidsville were flying under the Radar of Government oversight.
The Government had no Idea Pop culture identified with the shows, and Government passed these shows off as Kids stuff.
For the Kids, a Lid back then was a measure of Pot about 20 bucks a four finger bag, and what you did with it was to Puffenstuff and watch Sid & Marty Krofft.

I was a young child in the 70's that watched this crazy stuff back then, and I'm convinced now that the producers of kids' television shows back then were mostly on drugs and thinking it was funny to just torment us with their whacked out ideas. Strange memories from watching this stuff.

This is basically HR Pufnstuf but done on a tighter budget. Pufnstuf was cancelled not due to ratings, but because it was so expensive. After that show, the Kroffts videotaped their shows (rather than filmed them) and used less elaborate sets and fewer animated objects.

    • @Mudge07

Looks like they had enough Witchypoo make-up to paint the male lead in Lidsville, and keep Billie on as the genie. The HR Pufnstuf series was syndicated to the UK, but this Krofft kitch-up never made it across the big pond.
