Potting up some maple seedlings

  • This is just me splitting up some maples into their own pots.
These seedlings sprouted in 2023 and I had collected the seeds in later 2022.
I babbled a lot about cold stratification, but as usual got all the details wrong. I do keep them in the veggie drawer in my fridge, so they never freeze. I basically keep them there all winter and when I see a bit of root coming out I plant them. I'm not really sure why people do that rather then just plant them directly outside. I suppose as a way to keep an eye on them and then plant the ones that actually germinate and look healthy.
This batch I had spread out in a big pot, with a thin layer of soil over top. I left them alone all year, and now I split the survivors up.
I'll keep you posted how they look when they leaf up!

As a rooter guy, don't plant these over your sewer!! Hahaha. Man the amount of trees that attack sewers planted directly over them is mind blowing!! It keeps me in business at least 🤷‍♂️🤣
