This is an EXCELLENT game. Mostly, the only holdbacks are time to play (which can be substantive), player elimination, and well, the fact that if your gaming crew doesn't have thick skins, you might need to find new friends afterwards! The best way to play in my opinion is online, using correspondence to communicate, with turns being measured in days, so you can log on sometime in the evening, write your correspondence or orders, and check responses the next day. Also, the semi-anonymity of online play makes it so that the "stabbing" doesn't sting quite as much. Anyways, love this game. Thanks for taking us through the rules!

What would happen in the following situation?
France’s moves: Burgundy supports Munich. Munich moves to Berlin.
Russia’s moves: Bohemia supports Silesia to Munich. Prussia moves to Berlin.
    Thanks,

How do you play Diplomacy? Backstabbingly, Dan. Backstabbingly.

F*** this game. I really mean that in a sincere, non-joking way. Avoid it. Anyone who has ever played Diplomacy knows that it encourages toxic experiences with the potential for lasting scars. "It's like Risk,...but without dice" is the usual pitch. I'd say it's more like a litmus test to determine the sociopaths in your midst. Fortunately, the game market has come a long way since this negative-experience-generator first manifested, so you have plenty of options (EX: Small World) which will scratch your itch for negotiation & area-control without ruining relationships.

I have never played, but there are some in our game group that would hold decade spanning grudges, so there is no point to even look at this game for us

@@Lordborg909 You’ve dodged a bullet by avoiding it. It’s all of the worst traits of a boardgame. Overlong. Early player elimination. Wears out its welcome by the endgame. Encourages and rewards bullying. It’s a game that really needs a high player count and an equal level of commitment and familiarity with the gameplay among all the players. If any player begins the game with even a mild grudge with any other player for any reason, it will become a factor during the game. For players who are new to the hobby, Diplomacy will be a negative introduction. For hobby veterans, they will already be familiar with Diplomacy’s reputation and avoid it if they’ve never played it, or they’ll try it, experience its flaws, and in the future, ditch it in favor of a game like Twilight Imperium.

Diplomacy has a thriving and healthy community of players who are welcoming to newbies and very nice to each other
