      I got a 25 year old leatherman - I think every big mark and ding on it has a known cause, like the time I shorted a 12V car battery while changing fuses. The stories are the most interesting parts.

    Regarding the ripped pockets. Take a piece of leather, cut to whatever size you need to fit inside the pocket, fold it over leaving an opening for the top of the pocket and wrap it in a couple layers of duct tape. When I was still a firefighter, I kept a screwdriver, some pliers and cutters in my bunker gear pocket and thats how I protected my pockets (and self from being stabbed).

  • @Headcase0570
    @Headcase0570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    Using a carabiner to keep those wrenches together is just genius. I've superglued two small neodymium magnet to each wrench to make them stick together, but that picks up a lot of metal shavings over time and isn't too kind on the hands

    Good info. I too worked out of a van before I got old and retired.
    I did a similar set-up with tools. It never failed but you always needed another tool and it would be added to the list for the next job but it definitely made life easier. Every once in awhile I would take time to empty out the tools and clean them more than just wiping them down. Then I would refill the box with "only" the tools I needed and start all over adding and adding more stuff, nuts and bolts till it was overloaded again.
    I enjoy your shorts. It's amazing how much info is out there on TH-cam that idiots give you.
    Stay safe.

  • @criggie
    @criggie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Make a "pocket protector" to stop the pokey tools from causing holes. A plastic food jar is a good start - cut straight across the bottom , then up the sides a bit. That edge faces the red part of the bag. Trim the height to suit. Try and pick a jar that has about the same curve as the full pocket. I enjoy your style and realism - keep it up.

    I always loved the Milwaukee stackable job boxes (no im not red army, just work prefered milwaukee for everything). I worked as a tech at a hospital for a couple years and had a bunch of outbuildings I was responsible for. Very durable, waterproof, and nice for sortting common screws, Marrets, splice connectors, and all my replacement components. Had the nice big wheels on it for going up and down stairs as well. Could also have various stacks for various types of jobs: IE for security jobs I'd grab the one with door contacts, exit buttons, card readers, etc. Very handy.

    In the airlines we use a lot of cantilever opening box’s or craftsman square/rectangular boxes. We would make “dogs” for them, basically a small removable frame to roll it around on caster wheels (two straight rolling and two turning/ swiveling) then a nylon dog lead attached to it roll it around under a Boeing or Airbus. We would take about 90-100 pounds of tools to a plane to work by golf cart or truck, but use the roll it around shop or under a plane.
    The steel box is nice to secure stuff under a plane while at lunch. To keep the tampers and fuel guys from going through it.

    I got the ridgid pack out on Black Friday and I've had it roughly a year, and its held up pretty nicely. I'm a fabricator and I go to people's houses and that thing really comes in handy. I've got it packed to the brim tho, I'm still trying to figure out how I need to have all my stuff laid out in it but it it holds a ton of stuff, the bottom has my drills, an angle grinder, 4 batteries, charger and my hood and if I just kinda threw my shit in it then I gotta finagle my hood so it doesn't get smashed with the lid. The handle is about the only gripe I have with it, it's super loosey goosey and I try not to manhandle but it isn't bent so we'll see. I'm debating on getting the gen 2 because it looks like you can add extra stuff on the outside like a welding hood bag 👀 so I'll quit smooshing it in the tote. Love the videos man. I also got the kobalt bag, it's nothing fancy 6 pockets on the outside, fairly big bag, stouter than frig too! I've abused the mess outta that bag and it's still going strong lol. Ah ha moment when you showed the mini pouches all lined up. I’ll get bright colors when possible. Black is “cool” but will blend in with whatever you leave it on. Camo you’re just asking to loose your stuff (dropped a green bag once and took an hour to find it).

      Totally agree, from box cutters to smaller bags, water bottle or lighter. I never have to look long before retrieving because I picked the brightest color. Practically over looks when choosing tool (related) stuff

    the apachee hard cases that HF sells are fairly nice if u ever need to replace your brief case. the foam in them is kinda meh but you can find/buy stiff cut a way foam for cheap and use that. i purchased 2 of them when i did fire sprinkler work to protect our gage's and backflow system. deff worth looking into.

    I need a good bag for my tools. I work a bit of everything and stuff breaks down on the job and we have to call our shop mechanic over if I don't have the gear on hand and it slows us down and takes him from his job of taking care of the loaders and trucks/trailers so I really need something better than a backpack from costco to keep some tools in. I keep a few in my lunchbox too. I'll have to look into some of those tac totes or something.

    I've had my Klein bag, and a roll around carry on I use as a tool bag. Because they have laptop pockets. Super important for me. You're working on fork trucks, I'm working on those zebra label printers and some other stuff that calls for a laptop.
    I'm really having trouble finding a bag like the Klein that has a lot of little spaces for drivers and has the laptop pouch, and has wheels.

      The ZXP badge printer we have has to be the most temperamental thing I’ve ever dealt with. I run about 1,800 adhesive badge covers through that thing a year.

    I like the wrenches on the carbineers that as nice trick, I just have ye olde canvas roll for my wrenches but I don't carry my wrenches in my daily driver bag because for my job a pair of adjustables cover my needs 95% of the time.

    That is a socket set in the red Craftsman box, isn't it? Can't imagine 4 combo wrench sets and no socket sets. I wish tool companies would offer their tool sets in something other than blow molded boxes. They always seem to take up so much space for what they hold. I like the old flip top metal cases that SK ratchet sets came in that hardly took up any space.

    • @FunkFPV
      @FunkFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it’s Craftsman. I’m not a fan of blow mold cases but this one isn’t any bigger than it needs to be.

    The issue going down steps seems like it would be resolved better by making the wheels larger, particularly such that the radius extends out far enough that the contact surface is beyond the protective plate. I'd say that should also reduce the friction on the protective plate, and make it handle field/natural terrain better. That would mean that you would be dragging up and down stairs on the turning wheel, instead of using that plate as a friction surface. Of course, that would alter the footing, and probably increase cost, but ... well, that tends to clear up the motivations people tend to have around things like that.

    Also curious if you've gotten to work on the new toyotas with the four ignition coils, and that lack the adjust screw on top of the evaporator (not sure if it's called evaporator in English, but the part where there's antifreeze going in, and LPG going in to evaporate)?
    Also surprised you don't keep some sort of gasket maker in the brake bag. Nothing quite beats having the axle gasket commit seppuku on you on a friday afternoon
