- Central City is a historic mountain town located in Gilpin County, Colorado, United States. Situated in the Rocky Mountains, it is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of Denver. Central City is known for its rich mining history, preserved Victorian architecture, and vibrant casino scene. Central City was established in 1859 during the Colorado Gold Rush. It quickly became a prosperous mining town with a booming population and abundant gold and silver deposits. The town was nicknamed the "Richest Square Mile on Earth" due to its significant mineral wealth. Many historic buildings from the mining era have been preserved, giving the town a charming and nostalgic atmosphere.

I grew up in Orange county, CA. and Las Vegas, NV. I was ready for adventure and heard about Central City. Described to to me as old west tourist town. I was told gold was found there. Summer was near ,I'm 16 1/2 yrs.old, I talk two others to join me an the messenger. School let out, some clothes ,acoustic guitar, CC here we come. What a blast. ( Cream and Hendrix played red rocks) That was 1967 and again 1968. Moved there in 69 only to be drafted.
look at how beautiful and well designed this city is! I honestly want to start a movement to re-fluorish the city. Make it big again, but prevent it from being poisoned by over-car dependancy

In that part of the Rockies, cars and other various vehicles are a necessity to life, so, unfortunately, more people will mean more cars...
But I know what you mean; Central City looks like a great town, a town that deserves to be lived in!

Cool historical buildings. It was nice of that gentleman to show your around. I was reading online that the City passed an amendment to bring in casinos in 1990. The money brought in is to help restore and preserve the buildings.

I worked for the Colo Division of Gaming when they first opened up. After that I was the first GM of the Golden Rose. Lot of history there.

Here's some history backstory of Central City and Blackhawk: Before casino days, Central City was really hopping with tons of tourists - old saloons all over the place - open with bands and dancing. Used to be so much fun to go there. Blackhawk was virtually nothing. THEN, gambling was initiated. Local government of Central City mandated that all the buildings maintain their historical look and feel. Blackhawk however did not have those restrictions and took over with much more of a Las Vegas feel. They have many more casinos and hotels and became the hub for gambling, leaving Central City behind in the dust. Kinda wish you would have known this back story prior to filming and then also film in Black Hawk to see the difference. Always makes me sad to go to Central City now remembering how lively it used to be.
I was a tourist there in the summer of 1965. Looks similar but fewer people now.

I lived and worked there for 12 years. Everything you stated is accurate. Blackhawk was never shit till the Vegas Boys came in and cut half a mountain down for yet another stupid casino.

I visited the town multiple times back then and it was empty just like this. Toured the Central City opera house, and sadly, the site was more like a museum than an actual theater. Central City needs more tourists to revive her glorious past

Most of the large casinos are in nearby Black Hawk. I visited this area a few years ago but only toured the Black Hawk casinos.

The Central City Parkway was mostly funded by Central City casinos in order to entice more people to travel through Central City in hopes of them spending money in Central City rather than Blackhawk. Unfortunately, that plan did not work as the vast majority take Clear Creek Canyon and come up U.S. 6 to highway 119.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,921, and the median income for a family was $31,667.

Haha...it looks like one of those Upstate NY cities which are actually nice. Thinking it could be Troy, Little Falls, or Watertown, especially Troy which is another Brooklyn scene.
The term "richest square mile on earth" I think refers to the amount of gold that was found in that area and /or all the money the casinos make right there. I don't think it has to do with income.

I lived in CC for many years. Gambling basically destroyed much of it's history. I was there to see the transition. Blackhawk was devastated even worse. Almost none of their buildings remain. While you see all the same buildings, their interiors were stripped to make room for slot machines and card games. You can still mine the creeks for Placer gold higher in the hills, but it's tough to find. It has mostly been depleted.
The original gaming act was meant to restore these towns. One phrase in the act changed all that.
