    Great paining, and a fantastic job replicating the Bob Ross style. That said, I was slightly disappointed that you didn't beat the devil out of any of your brushes at all.

    Adding a tiny little bit of water helps keep thing damp too. Or you can lightly mist it with a sprayer to keep things working a little longer too. It's a good technique to know for skies and water, even if overall you don't want to paint exactly like Bob Ross. Thanks for a good video.

    I have done about 4 or 5 bob ross paintings with acrylic but I also use the 2 inch brushes and palet knife . But what I do is just take water and brush it all over the canvas to make it wet. Then just follow bob ross while he is painting. But mine are a little different I don't do snow very well so I might just do woods and green fields tell I learn how to do snow. LOL. But you dig a good job .

    Bob Ross's mountain texture technique with the knife (his mentor Bill Alexander and his son Steve were actually much better at it) depended on the knife not touching the canvas, believe it or not. The idea is to get a "little roll of paint on the edge of the knife" and allow the stiff paint on the canvas to pull the thin paint off the knife - that creates all the little bumps and holes as the paint gets dragged off unevenly but requires an insanely delicate touch and the effect is almost impossible to replicate as quickly with a brush. What you can do to get something sort of similar with a fan brush is to load it quite heavily (again with a thinner paint than what's already on the mountain) and just touch it to the canvas then instead of sliding the brush, let it bounce down the mountain. I find when doing it that way it helps if I angle the easel away from me about 45°, but with the knife it's best to keep the easel vertical. Similar technique if you want the cabin to look weathered.
    Also, you get more texture in the sky if you use a stiff brush to scrub the 'liquid hwite' into the canvas then scrape off as much as you can with a knife or dab with a paper towel, then load your brush quite deep with your sky colour and apply in all sorts of different directions, pressing hard at the top of the piece and gradually reducing the pressure as you progress toward the horizon. Same pressure variation with water but from the bottom up and using only horizontal instead of randomly directed strokes. You definitely used a lot more liquid hwite than you would have needed if it was oil, but perhaps it would have dried too quickly if you hadn't done it the way you did.
    The stippling mist worked really well. I think your liquid hwite wasn't wet enough by the time you got to the water reflections. What I often do when using that technique with oils is sketch the outline of anything that's going to be reflected and do the reflections when it's still wet enough because you don't actually need it to be wet for the mountains and trees so you can do those later, and if you don't want your water to be completely calm you can push some horizontal strokes through your reflections with a clean brush to make the water move.
    Unfortunately you didn't have a squirrel in your shirt and your hair isn't big enough so I'm only giving you an 8. 😄

      On the face of it, oils seem more expensive but they have greater coverage so it kind of cancels out. I use both for different purposes and I would say on average a finished painting costs only slightly more in oils than in acrylics. Both are much more expensive than water colours but I only use those for florals.

      If you decide to use the liquid white with oil painting just use less. Like a quarter sized puddle will cover a 12x16 canvas. If your press your finger on the canvas you should be able to see your fingerprint on your finger. That is the perfect amount. If your fingerprints are not visible just wipe some of the liquid white using a shop towel. Hope this helps!!

    Appreciate the video. Something else about Bob Ross' painting technique: the paint he used was darn near to pigmented caulk in consistency. I noticed years ago that the Bob Ross paint set my sister had was a good deal softer in consistency than what he appeared to use on the show. A friend of mine (a far superior artist than I will ever be) suspected that Bob either mulled his own paint, or he left it on brown paper bag to wick away excess oil.

      I've found using cheap hand sanitizer works very well for cleaning brushes, even when the paint has dried in, just leave them in for 20 minutes or so and then wash in warm water and soap and you should have workable brushes again. You can even use a dab of hair conditioner after washing to make the bristles softer. Hope that's of use 😊

      @@CaryJacobsArt yep I know what you mean because I tried it with a palette knife and acrylics and couldn't get it to work either. I ended up just taking a brush putting in the base like you did let it and letting it dry and then coming back with whatever color I wanted to highlight the mountains with and using a small brush and I just did them in that way. Of course with acrylics and they're being translucent you may have to layer it in a little bit towards the top of the mountain to get it to really shine with the highlight which has to be the snow most times. It took me a little playing with it but I got it down pretty good it looks very much like his mountains. Of course it takes a little longer than it took him but when I'm finished you can't hardly tell the difference in the quality.

    50% golden open slow drying
    30% retarder
    10% gloss
    10% open thinner
    Or
    1cup
    1/3 cup
    1.6 tablespoons

    Very good painting! Also what paint brushes and paint are you using. thank you! (Sorry if I’m annoying)

      Thanks!!! I'm using Atelier interactive paints and Atelier retarder, although I have no idea what brushes I'm using I'm afraid! I've never worried too much about brands of brushes as it comes so much down to personal preference, so I just have a random assortment and just grab the ones I like the feel of :p
      And don't worry, you aren't annoying, haha

    Bob Ross Used Oil Paint or Acrylic Paint?

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Ross used oil paints. The problem with oils though is they need nasty chemicals to clean and dilute them, and can take weeks to dry fully, plus they are a little more expensive :)

      @@CaryJacobsArt plus I have artist friend who died from oil painting.
      Never use oil paint inside your house, the fumes will contaminate your living area and poison your family and pets.

    Do you only use the Ghetto liquid white for the bass or do you mix it for evey part of the painting like the sky then the mountains

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the liquid white should be the first thing you put on the canvas and is supposed to be like a base layer that you then put all the paint on top of :)

    What is up with them teeny little brushes? You need to get the big old Mighty brush 3 inch 2 1/2 inch got to get things done quick so your mixture that you put on for your white gesso doesn't dry and you also want to put in your water at the same time as your Sky then do your mountains and really doing a mountain with a brush just not proficient enough you could have used that putty knife that would have worked kind of sort of but a lot better than them dinky little brushes please take this with a great assault I am not trying to bash you I'm just giving you some hard constructive criticism
