Because he has no shame, he can keep making money off of someone else’s work and refuse to apologise for 15 years even after he was ruled to do so by the court. And he only now apologise 15 years later because a new law is being enacted on Jan 1st 2021, so he apologises one day before that law can penalise him. And even so, in the “apology” he basically said “I was just a child, why are you guys tearing into my old wounds?” And “I’m going to donate the profit from my plagiarism to charity for you.” What a shitty person.
You'd be surprised how prevalent this attitude is among filmmakers, especially those from smaller film industry complexes (i.e. not Hollywood, India, or Hong Kong).
As an Indian, I share these feelings about our industry as well. However, as an Indian who is also a Psychologist, I wonder if apologies are so rare in our cultures because the other thing that is super common is being unforgiving and never ending shaming. So apologising here, feels like losing and dying forever. We can soften up on the shaming and the increase the encouragement on apologies being accepted
For most part it is an Asia Dilemma that asian culture value "face" in many aspect. Not entirely exclusive to India or China but also the mixed bag of colonized culture smaller asian countries as well, one example will be Japan. As you know that we have watched the mainstream media over the past decades that portrayed Japan as "honorable and apologetic" for smallest mistakes, well that is simply not entirely true because till this date the japanese governments never really apologize anything for their past warcrimes during WW2. Recently they claimed to had "formally apologize" to Korea, but then after that they went on to committed independence congratulatory money controversy. Japan pays Philippines to keep quiet about Japans warcrimes, remove them from their history books and to remove their comfort women statues. Korea isn't ever going to do that. Japan does this type of propaganda all over the world, even Germany. People underestimate how propaganda heavy Japan is because they are more successful at it than China. This is why Japan will never truly consider an ally to the asia region and this is the reason why for the sake of denying their past in order to save "face" to became an american lapdog as we all knows of their position today One theory example will be if I bring you to courtroom, your lawyer sit next to you and told you to deny the claims even though when you know is true and the other side is right. If you apologize then the judge will dismiss any of your defense and can easily pass maximum penalty on your side and you will suffer a great fall. The morally thoughts in our mind would be "if we as people apologize and accepted, things will go at ease from that moment onwards" but in reality it will always be "if I apologize, the returns to me will not be as simple because everything I'm trying to be will be morally bankrupt at this point". Psychologially, it's the fear of discounting yourself more than owning to yourself. The shaming part might not be long from the other side rather ownself shaming ownself eternally, thus the other side will bring up the issue whenever you might done something shameful again. Humanity does forgive but never forget
There's broadly two types of cultures when it comes to this sort of thing: Cultures that punish social misdeeds primarily through shame (informal, external), and cultures where social misdeeds are predominantly punished through guilt (formal, internal). There's advantages and disadvantages to both. A disadvantage of shame cultures is that misdeeds are only punished when they are publicly witnessed, which can bring on the idea that doing bad things is morally fine so long as you get away with doing them.
Of course the movie would be bad though I mean the designs of the cars look like if lightning mcqueen never had a car wash in his life and had a diet purely out of illegal gas

I honestly hope that people won't write off this video on Yang's channel just because it's not as famous outside China - the message here is so important. As an animator in America of Chinese descent but with a passion for anime, I'd spent years trying to wrestle with why animation in China seemed to have no defined style and magnum opus pieces which had international appeal. The times are finally changing with films like Nezha and Legend of Xiaohei, but the fact that so many of these creatively bereft films still occupy the public consciousness is a tremendous obstacle to selling what storytelling is possible out of Chinese artists. Even in America, where the same problems lead to new works being deemphasized in Hollywood, they at least have a storied tradition to fall back upon (unwarrantedly) - I can only hope that a few incredible success stories will push Chinese cinema into the kind of golden age we saw in the late 70s in America, and I'm glad that when it happens, Yang will be here to introduce us!
The only way to have a cultural golden age in China is if the CCP steps down or if they became less totalitarian to allow ideas to flourish and censorship to die out. But that just seems doubtful

I’ve just come across your channel. Very cool perspective for me as a Westerner. I work in the film industry here in America. One point I’d like to make is that American perceptions of Chinese products (at least in my industry) have definitely shifted in the past half decade. Nanguang, the parent company to high-end “Nanlux” LED film lights has made huge waves in the professional space. Also the gimbal manufacturer Zhiyun has become quite popular. Both companies are proudly and openly Chinese top to bottom, which I think is what is shifting attitudes regarding Chinese products in the West. When you make something good and sell it at a competitive price people respect that, regardless of past biases. I own several products from both companies and happily recommend them to others over her.
Thank you so much for providing this perspective. I have to admit that in the past I have unfairly judged some of the ripoffs movie/drama/TV show from Chinese as being "supported" in China, and thought people there are okay with it. But now I know at least a lot of people in China are also against it.

I thank you for bringing in the Chinese people perspective so much. It's hard to remember that people are not accurately represented by whatever is produced in their country or the government. I also now know to watch some of those original animation besides anything else, just to support genuine artists fighting stigma and history like this
I would agree with that if we're talking about most countries, but since China is a socialist country ruled by a communist party with an iron fist over its "citizens". The government's opinions matter much more internationally than democratic countries such as Japan or Taiwan, and it represents what is "mainstream" in China's society.
I just found your channel, and love it. Great expositions. 2 things: 1) as a Chinese American I find knockoffs a strange dichotomy because you want to have pride in your heritage, but I also find myself separating from it increasingly because things like this just flood the narrative. 2) ending the video on that Wukong clip was so gangster. I can't wait to see that game succeed.
The connection (as an American) between anti-maskers and how other Chinese people see Chinese knock-offs was brilliant and a connection I had never made before. Great video!
It’s not a good comparison in my opinion. It’s reflects American culture of being selfish but free while wearing a mask represents no individualality but community ie china. I’m not American or an anti masker btw
The fact that lots of Chinese folks are bothered or frustrated by Genshin Impact, a game I think is actually not nearly the copycat it initially presents itself to be, says a lot about how frustrated they must be by their perception globally. That game’s pretty great! But while it might not perpetuate the stigma, it certainly didn’t push back against it.
Honestly, would love to see a time when people could look at an animation and *know* it's a Chinese style animation. People can point out French, American, Canadian (even if some people get US/Canadian mixed up), Japanese, and even Korean styles. More animation styles are always great to see.
Most Chinese anime(talking specifically about them rn) IS very different looking than Japanese. Take Antidote, a BL anime from China, the art style isn't as polished and the animation is awful sometimes. Chinese studios seem to prefer realism when it comes to hairstyles, color palettes and over all anatomy of characters, and Chinese anime also has really weird length of episodes... Like there's this one Chinese show about zombies and one episode can be 40 minutes long while the next will be only 8 minutes long...
I've never heard of a distinct "Canadian" style of animation before, what are some examples of Canadian animation that's different from American productions? And from what I've seen from Korean animation, it seems very Japanese-inspired as well, practically identical.
Comparatively, from what I've watched, Chinese film and animation is not afraid to fully embrace over-the-top and bombastic flair with their action, while taking it completely seriously too. Anywhere else, esp if done in America, it wouldve been considered corny and artificial, maybe even cringey.

One common reason for the hate is because in China, Genshin was advertised more as an alternative to BotW for people without a Switch. It highlights all the similarities instead of showing off the original systems. The game is proud of its similarities, and people did not like that.
Calling it the BOTW aesthetic feels false. It intentionally apes stuff we associated with Ghibli was was common and cliche with that studio was new. And is intentionally flashier. Now not liking it, that's legit. As feels BOTW but more anime and worse has microtransations, but even then has some good points.

The games industry is filled with knock offs. Call of Duty started its life as a Medal of Honor knock off, which later down the line lead to Medal of Honor being rebooted as a knock off of Call of Duty 4. I feel the term "knock off" is a bit disingenuous, as a game that borrows heavily from another can still be a good game. Microtransactions aside (which are hardly ever good) I think Genshin Impact is a good bit of fun. I liked how they added in the other languages. I play a lot of Japanese games that have subtitles with the voices in Japanese but hearing Korean and Chinese ingame was a unique experience.

Very minor FYI: the English idiom "crapshoot" has absolutely nothing to do with the mild expletive "crap" in terms of meaning. It refers to the popular casino dice game "craps", which derives its name from "crabs", as in the crustaceans, a term for one of the values a player could roll. In the language of the game, each roll is called a "shoot". Among the "big three" gambling games in America that were later picked up by casinos (craps, blackjack, and poker), craps is the only one that is purely random, with no skill involved on the part of the player beyond their basic ability to assess the odds of rolling a particular number. A "crapshoot" literally means a game of craps, or as a more general idiom, a gamble, with an implication that the gambler has no way to affect the odds. Hope you take this in the spirit it was intended, which is: language is fun and English is weird!

This is why Japan will never truly consider an ally to the asia region and this is the reason why for the sake of denying their past in order to save "face" to became an american lapdog as we all knows of their position today
One theory example will be if I bring you to courtroom, your lawyer sit next to you and told you to deny the claims even though when you know is true and the other side is right.

I also hope for that but the thing is, the CCP doesn't take kindly to the 'creative' types. One wrong step and you disappear....

And hell, some Chinese people even started liking Genshin
Anywhere else, esp if done in America, it wouldve been considered corny and artificial, maybe even cringey.

it's so weird to me that mainland china doesnt like genshin impact for being a knockoff while i've been defending it from racists saying it's a knockoff because it builds so much of its own systems and identity on top of the basic botw aesthetic. i've even been playing it in chinese because it's so rare i get to play a game with my own culture in it. i'd totally understand if they disliked its gacha though
"alternative to BotW for people without a Switch" while the game itself doesn't play like BotW in the most part. as GI player, I still want Switch just to play BotW.
As a Chinese myself addicted to Breath of the Wild, one of my friend in Shanghai got excited about Genshin, I basically threw him a truckload of Breath of the Wild video and got him a used NS to stop him from playing it...A lot of Chinese NS players hate this game, the short clip in this video is actually a gamer smashing his PS4 in front of the Sony stage for advertising Genshin on their console.

“A new generation of traitors” was the icing on the cake!
This movie looks like the result of an College Animation student making a long overdue CG movie and he had to turn it in before Summer Break started.
Like, 1 DAY before Summer Break started.
With the equipment china could provide back in 2015, a college student can do better. Seriously, even the original toys before the 2000s look better. And that's like over 15 years earlier. (It's 1998 isn't it?)
@@A.i.r_K you can look at many chinese animations even pre-1980, they look better than that shitbag. even though they are 2D each frame was hand drawn giving it a unique art style. one of them is "Where Is Mama", which is a completely hand-painted short film made in 1960.
The man is completing his animation DURING THE PREMIER

Not being a one-sided narrator makes me feel a sense of relief. The original creators make their efforts so hard and they deserve to win! What a great commentator!!
This was one of your best videos yet! It's so rare to be able to hear the perspectives of the wider Chinese audience as an English speaker. I would love to watch some more videos where you explored Chinese audience reception of films. For exampe, I've heard that some Chinese films that have gained widespread critical success internationally like Zhang Yimou's Hero (I absolutely love this film) and House of Flying Daggers, and Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had much more mixed reception among Chinese audiences. I'd be really interested to hear a discussion of these kind of disparities in opinion from a Chinese perspective.
I'd also be interested to hear a bit about Chinese reception of Hollywood films that bombed in America but were successful in China (e.g. The Mummy 2017, Transformers: The Last Knight etc.). It'd be fascinating to hear about why these films were able to find success in China but not their home country.
Keep up the great work!

As a Taiwanese, I am really happy that Accented Media doesn't mock China with common racism. But instead pointing out real problems with its media industry and in some part it's political climate. Acknowledging Chinese reaction themselves instead of just assuming things between them.
This is just a youtube comment. But over the past year, I am very demoralized that many online Chinese netizens react to racism and prejudice from the US by becoming racists themselves.
I am glad to see someone who is more open minded towards Chinese creatives. I'm hoping some day that people becoming more like you can make many Chinese people less defensive towards (what they consider) foreign critics.
I hate Communist China
Some of the shit they get mad about ain't even something you'd think is remotely racist or offensive in any way. You can literally get dog piled on if you acknowledge Taiwan as an independent country.
@@m4x927 Not everyone is like that in China. A lot of media encourage offensive news of Taiwan towards China, and vice versa. I often get mad about it myself.
But I can acknowledge that things like Kong flu or mistreating Asian citizens abroad in charge of communism is a different matter than bunch of babies getting mad about a Taiwanese flag appearing on a show.
I will always recognize Taiwan as an independent country. However, generalizing and entire country and making antagonistic comments will only make people on both sides defensive.
If we let rumors and stereotypes rule the discourse between China and Taiwan, then this is exactly what the CCP wanted because they can avert criticism by saying, "See, those criticisms are just ridiculous."

Thank you for bringing such a refreshing take, instead of the typical "Chinese Knock-off BAD". Chinese animation has been improving a lot in recent years. A lot of gamers aren't aware that a lot of the animated cinematic videos of major titles such as League of Legends, Overwatch, etc. are made by Chinese animators. It brings me joy that you ended the video with a positive note, acknowledging that the Chinese film industry is producing great original IPs (a lot of which are inspired by Chinese mythology) and are better than this.
Fun fact:
A lot of anime is actually made in China
While they are brining in animatirs from japan ?
@@ra-wj1wl By your comment I can see that you didn't watch the end of the video.
Nobody is saying they aren't. Art always stems from imitation (even anime has western roots). They are learning directly from the masters. But the important thing is their film industry in China is starting to take animation seriously, and that animators can actually start earning a living wage.
Next time when you watch a game cinematic, pay close attention to the credits and you'll see some Chinese names there (along with Korean and Japanese ones).

You know, Genshin I would say that it just "looks " like BOTW but then it became some totally different stuff.
I played both game and i totally agree with you.
I agree, Genshin copied some or most of the mechanics from BOTW and even the looks of the game. But mostly made a different game out of it. Although that they are being called out for copying, it must have died out because of reviews and such.
As far as I know, it copies mechanics and motions from other games. I have seen a clips of a Genshin character swaying a sword and running which people pointed out their similarity to Nier: Automata.
It doesn't really matter how the mechanics work... There is no such thing as pure originality anymore, it's how you execute it is what's important and Genshin owned it. BOTW surely have copied something out of other games if you dig deep enough and that game copied something from another game and so on...
In the end, it doesn't matter. Zelda fans should just chill, the story was awesome but BOTW doesn't even look good in the first place even by 2017 standards. Try to look at this objectively, sheesh~
if just copy a mechanic is being called copy cat i wonder about people who use rpg maker to make their own game? or the game like srpg who move square by square.

Genshin impact’s japanese name has more to do with the anime culture. It’s more like haagen dazs. Also calling it a copycat is unfair.
Let let's not start with several attack move copied from DMC
@@williamkwl6153 I feel like the haters were bashing it more for "copying" Nier Automata's "weapon floating behind user" and 2B's large sword attack animation rather than the DMC animations (which itself is rather pitifully petty, especially for the former as PSO2 and possibly other games did that even earlier than Nier Automata)
@@kii-bou7153 again, Nier and Bayonetta is made by Platinum. Hideki Kamiya, one of the developers, is also the one who created DMC. Despite him not heading every Platinum game project, you can feel some of the influences.

Genshin Impact definitely takes a lot of inspiration from Breath of the Wild but I really think it's enough of it's own thing to be it's own game especially the way it's growing with each update.
I agreed. I dont think its a knock off, To me it just the art style and direction are inspired from breath of the wild and thats all.
It's a knock-off, but one with so much love and effort put into it, to the point it ultimately become something distinct from what it copied.
@@alecxander9573 I guess you are right, like how tom cruise is a knock off of jacky chan. both punch people, both do their stuns and both jump off high buildings.
@@alecxander9573 I am not going to denial that GL impact does have some game mechanics that BOTW has, but having same game mechanics in different game is pretty common. A fps game has sprinting, ADS, swap guns etc, does it mean it copy modern warfare? No. if it works and its fun why won't you want it. Any games has slimes, goblins, robots. Most rpg fantasy games has mountain settings and ruins, its also nothing new.
Just because they look the same doesn't means its the same game. Don't judge a book by its cover. And instead of hating it, you should be proud at your favourite game lay a new foundation and inspired other games.
but if you still don't buy it and still think its a copy... welp, all i can say is, I guess this is what happens when you only take 1 source as an inspiration.
