I feel so proud of Jamaica right now. Never imagined that I would hear the economy of Jamaica being used as a standard for others to use.

The foreign exchange crisis in Trinidad sounds exactly like what Jamaica experienced in the 70's and 80's!!!

@@LabiBradleyC Years ago I worked with a company that did business in TnT. The clients would complain that they had to send their employees out to all the banks to everyday to get the $200 that they were allowed to buy daily. But that is inefficient for staff that shoud be working but instead they are in the lines at the banks.

28:00 a great reply to the usual mercantilist talking point about exports as a solution to forex shortage. the problem is government, full stop.

Being a citizen of Trinidad the forex issue was created by our very poor and greedy government, why would a country tax private properties and not commercial ones? Why does our government get away with all the billions of dollars they swindled? And the forex issue was created to stifle upcoming and middle class business owners while the 1% government financiers get all the USD to stock their businesses

The only booming business in T&T and elsewhere is , sadly , crime .
Jamaica sits between two failed states , Cuba and Haiti and one bright economic light , DR . Hope we choose wisely ….

A very enlightening discussion, thank you. I am no monetary expert so I'm not sure how a country would begin to solve a foreign exchange problem. Where would Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and other Caribbean countries fall on the so called"De-dollarization" push. Wouldn't it be beneficial to not be hamstrung to the US dollar. Let's say a majority of countries agree to use a unit of currency that is not the US dollar to transact with each other, wouldn't that help? Would a international digital currency help?. Say a country has 100 business that source inputs on the international market in US dollars and there is a policy to increase SMEs in the country but these businesses need US dollars to purchase and import inputs. So the US dollar acts as a barrier to growth. How can we solve the dependency on US dollars.
