I truly believe this man is millions of years old. This version of Death is so well done. He's not evil, or even antagonistic. He has such an otherworldly feel.

with how powerful he is it makes me wonder how he came to be a horseman, he is clearly not on their level and I would suspect he wouldn't want to be seen in their presence either. so how does someone this powerful end up being grouped with three beings that are as insignificant to him as a human.
I always had the feeling that Death isn't a Horseman; the Horsemen are his. Maybe his creations, or his agents, or the rings just give them a fraction of his power. When Dean wore Death's ring he clearly didn't wield all his power.
@@lionmane3131 The "Horsemen" embody the inevitable trials and/or fate of all sentient life. There will always be some form of War, Famine, Pestilence and Death. It's just that out of all of these aspects Death is the one that can be delayed only so long. It's shown on the episode Dean becomes death for a single day that the guy is always on the clock alongside his network of goons. Hell he's the only horseman who needed a network of goons while the other horsemen clearly had their fair share of free time outside their normal schemes. I'm pretty sure the title horseman is just simply that, a title and even Death regards it as nothing more. He allowed his powers to be akin to his brethren in that he has a conduit for his powers in the form of the ring but has shown he could easily reap someone without it. The personality falls in line with all properly powerful versions of death who are less egotistical than they are "A matter of fact" about their role in the universe. Kinda like Myrukul from D&D who simple let three invaders claim his title cause he was so over the whole "Ruler aspect" while he retained quite a bit of power and simply stayed to guide them while still sorting the dead. Sorry for the long rant but I love these depictions of "Death" because of how accurate they must be. Death makes much more sense as an indifferent omnipotent force that just exist and it's rare to see it properly rendered much less in a live action television show.

As much as I love that line and how memorable it is, I just can't seem to shake the fact that as almighty as God literally is, and Death himself that will reap God himself is, how the hell can't they even remember their own birthdays? or birthtime.. I guess days didn't exist back then
I love this version of Death. He's not just seemingly uncaring, he LITERALLY doesn't care. He's completely unbiased, and at no point is he not looking at the big picture. Such an amazing character. Not that Billie isn't great too, but the original Death is just awesome.

I genuinely have no idea how these are amazing lines. These lines tell you how badass they want you to think Death is. Show, don't tell. The viewer should come to that conclusion on their own.

Every other character has a show of force, an impressive spectacle of power. Death snuffs someone in the same motion he uses to brush his shoulder.
This character is the epitome of "less is more." Never gets angry or tries any convoluted tricks to get what he wants, he demands respect and remains calm in all situations, even in his own demise.

They could have used CGI or some creepy sound effects to make Death seem more menacing, but they don't. Just simply Jullian Rigman's incredible acting and delivery of his lines and Dean shitting his pants is all that is necessary.
I love how he's the only being in existence to make Dean legitimately, and outwardly, terrified. Lucifer, Michael, Mother, hell even God, all of them catch wise from Dean. But not Death. So cool

He died and as no one in existence had seen death die before, they assumed he was dead and he allowed the events that would of happened if he was dead happen, making it appear as though he died. However I think he was just got rid off so that the emergence of Darkness would look more hopeless. The strong, almost omnipotent Death is nowhere, so there only help would be either one of the Archangels or God himself.

A perfectly written, acted, and filmed scene. One of the best I've ever seen, anywhere. Julian Richings and Jensen Ackles deserve awards for this scene, but so too do the writers.

I like this Death. He's never malicious. He's a fact of reality. I imagine that if he had to tell someone what his job is, it would probably be: "I'm the one who was here when the first life existed. My job as Death is to be there when the last life is extinquished. My job, in it's entirety, is to close down the metaphorical bar, clean the tables, put up the chairs and turn of the lights."

I'll put the chairs on the table, turn off the lights, and lock the universe behind me when I leave."
The line when he says "You know you can't cheat Death" just really raised the chills on my spine. And the way he glares at Dean, knowing that if he dared cheat him, there's no escape.
Remember the days when Death was so mysterious, cunning and wise? remember when Lucifer was so terrifying we couldn't even comprehend what he wanted? remember when Castiel was the powerful loyal soldier who was self-conflicted between doing his job and protecting his friends? Remember when Villains had depth? Remember when Supernatural was fun?
Dean wasn't even afraid around darkness. But he was scared around death. The only character in the entire supernatural who dean and basically everyone else was afraid of.

Yeah, like him going through the stages of earth, and around the world, Sumaria, ancient Greece, Rome, Wessex, the Ottoman empire, Mongolia, Scandinavia. Wild west, Cold war, modern day. So cool.
The thing I love most about Julian Richings' Death is that, out of a lot of different iterations and appearances, his performance is the one that strikes me as being the _oldest._ A lot of versions can accurately portray Death as timeless or ageless, Death of the Endless comes across like that very well, but this one feels the most genuine. He's existed since before existence was a thing, and you can tell.
Why would he care about the time anyway? Death is a force of nature. Only way around it is to cease everything that is capable of observing from existing, since lifeless can't observe it's surroundings. I am not much into lore of Supernatural so I guess this does not matter in this series' case.
Death of the Endless genuinely cares about the living, and wants to ease our pain. Supernatural's Death doesn't care. We matter to him as much as amoebas matter to us.
I hope that's what they do, that'd be beyond awesome, just see chuck laying there defeated with dean and/or sam standing over him and death just enters eating a bag of pickle chips complaining that they took too long

The first time I watched this scene, I misheard that line as 'God would like to, Dean' implying that God wants to die. I still hear that when I rewatch it and I take it as headcanon because that's so interesting and bleak
I think, for me at least, it's just how "matter of fact" it is. Like, to us (and Dean) it's a huge thing to hear. Literally mind blowing. But to Death? It's the same as saying "Today is Monday. " And somehow, that's even more unnerving.
Having faced demons, angels, monsters and a whole lot more, Dean is quite a tough guy who doesn't get scared easily. But when facing off against Death itself, he's about to shit himself from pure fear.

To get the ring of War, Sam and Dean had to fight their confused allies. To get the ring of famine, Sam had to go back to demon blood. To get the ring of pestilence, they had to withstand a bunch of deadly diseases at once. To get the ring of death, Dean just had to eat pizza and have a conversation with death himself. It's truly ironic that the most powerful of the horseman is the one that gave hi a ring the easiest, but it really says something about his character
Technically, Death demanded that Dean be willing to give in and let Sam throw himself in the Cage to trap Lucifer. Death, like everyone else, knows Dean's no stranger to pain and dying, but his weakness is Sam, so he demands that Dean give up his "life" in exchange for the ring.
Dean'd make the "dickless" jokes to the Angels, continually make puns from Dick Roman's name, beat up on monsters that can throw him across the room with one arm. But during that whole chat, he looked like he was shitting himself internally. You know a Supernatural character is a badass if Dean doesn't want to mess with them.
I just love that Death is this celestial being, one of the Four Horsemen, that's been a part of the grand cycle of the Universe since the beginning, he finds humans insignificant... yet he enjoys their food and drink.
That's how amazingly well written this personification of death is. He's so well realised even that cliché meme can't detract from his gravitas. Where we know instinctively that Dean is the joke compared to this Death.

I love this interaction with Death; he was the easiest to get the ring from, heck he wanted Dean to take it so he wasn’t bound to Lucifer anymore. I love that Death was so nonchalant as well; so calm not intimidated by anything even God. I’d never thought I’d see Death eating pizza either 😂

I miss the original Death, how powerful and divine it is portrayed. That's probably one of the few times we saw Dean that scared. Coming back to these videos after the final season makes me realize how good the first five seasons were.
Not before or since has any character in the entire Supernatural universe been able to command so much authority in front of Dean Winchester. He'll stand toe to toe with Lucifer, mouth off to Michael, kill leviathans, but Death is so much more...more.

I honestly think he'd be the only character I'm okay with coming back at this point, simply because he's...death. He's never truly gone.
Honestly, if this Death stayed until the series finale with God/Chuck, that “I’ll reap God too” line would’ve held a helluva lot better. Especially with Chuck’s last scene.

I always find it fascinating when immortal beings are portrayed in a human or humanoid form. The psychology of being as old as the universe is a concept I've always been obsessed with. I feel like this portrayal of death is so fucking badass, especially the line where he's like "Yeap, one day god will meet his end as well." and says it so matter-of-factly. Literally how I've always seen death personified, true neutral.
I still can't get over this scene. Early Death was absolutely perfect. The characterization, the casting, the dialougue, the DELIVERY...just impeccable.
This scene right here is honestly the main reason that I doubt the character (Death) is actually dead. He makes it clear here that he is responsible for not just Earth, but literally all death anywhere in the known universe. Now don't get me wrong, things have gotten bad on Supernatural before, but as Dean says here that's just a level far, far, FAR above the Winchester's paygrade. That'd honestly be akin to actually killing God. (Heck, they couldn't even kill Lucifer. They had to trap him.) I couldn't see the writers realistically trying to confront the catostrophe that'd result if Death wasn't around.

+Normal Commenter I don't think that Death is dead, only his vessel. What the reaper might have meant was, that Death will no longer help the Winchesters since Dean attacked him. Perhaps it is like when Sam attacks Crowley, where Crowley thanks Sam for reminding him who he really am, and so Death has returned to be the merciless primal force he was always meant to be. Killing Death goes to much against everything, even for Supernatural.
Death is literally the only person in the Supernatural Universe who looked down on Dean like he was a snarky bacterium that could be smashed like a bug. Not even God talked down to him like that.

This is my favourite portrayal of Death by Julian Rigman because he acts "normal" and yet, he is one of the most powerfulness supernatural-type characters to ever walk who can cause you to instantly fear him without the need for typical violence!

I've seen this scene several times and ... oh my god it's as tense and powerful as the first time, every time. It *feels* like dancing on the edge of a knife over a thousand foot fall. Gets my adrenaline pumping and it's just two beings sitting in a bistro having a conversation. ... Now THAT is fucking *writing!* And acting! Hats off to both these gentlemen for their amaaaazing performances.
I think in whole SPN Angel arc, apart from Misha's Castiel and Mark's Lucifer, ( too many characters and they were just come and go angels.. didn't even get noticed ) Death is the most brilliantly written character of all. Death was portrait as wiser than God, older as God, and in the end he doesn't want to be extra scary because you have no way of avoiding him.. His dialogs were perfectly written, like one character that writers actually didn't get bored writing, they put some effort to it.. Specially him giving his ring to Dean and make him wear it for a day.. That scene and the concept was one of shows highlights for me.. Actor himself is brilliant in every way.. His delivery was spot on, clam, clear and deep, just like a wise old man who's seen so much... Not to forget the intro music.. Julian Richings as Death .. One of the best TV character choices to me.. (this was a comment I left in another clip, but couldn't help but re-post it here. I love this scene way too much.. Well, the whole scene from when he walked out of that black car.. Julian Richings stole the scene like no one ever could.. )
As Jurken Said, it's a 'pale car'. Book of Revalations 6.7 following, New International Version: "I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth." Book of Revelations is the origin of the four riders, and has some seriously quotable passages ^^ (also, Pestilence is newer than book of revelations, he used to be Conquest... but well. The Black Pest kinda convinced people that Pest should be a Rider. Can't fault them I suppose)
Out of all the characters on the show both in the beginning and currently, this is by far still the best characterization of a supernatural entity. You can feel just how his level of power and influence isn't measured by strength or intellect. He is a force of nature, and the end of everything the true immortal
One of the many things this show got RIGHT, was how Death viewed all of humanity as tiny and insignificant. I would even take it a step further and say that if Death really existed, it would never bother to show itself on this tiny speck of a planet, just like you or I would never stop at an ant hill, to converse with the ants inside. Also, a human would never be able to kill Death, like Dean did. I rolled my eyes when Dean cut Death down with his own scythe (or whatever its called...). If Death exists, there would be no way to kill it, after all, its as old as the universe, perhaps older, one of the top dogs, as cosmic entities go. Its level of power is beyond our comprehension, theres definitely no way to kill it.

There are a few actors in mind that could do just as good of a job and be threatening without being direct, like Javier Bardem in the Movie no country for old men I think it was called.

I love how terrified Dean is throughout the entire scene. Doesn’t even hide it and it’s brilliant
with how powerful he is it makes me wonder how he came to be a horseman, he is clearly not on their level and I would suspect he wouldn't want to be seen in their presence either. so how does someone this powerful end up being grouped with three beings that are as insignificant to him as a human.

I always had the feeling that Death isn't a Horseman; the Horsemen are his. Maybe his creations, or his agents, or the rings just give them a fraction of his power. When Dean wore Death's ring he clearly didn't wield all his power.
@@lionmane3131 The "Horsemen" embody the inevitable trials and/or fate of all sentient life. There will always be some form of War, Famine, Pestilence and Death. It's just that out of all of these aspects Death is the one that can be delayed only so long. It's shown on the episode Dean becomes death for a single day that the guy is always on the clock alongside his network of goons. Hell he's the only horseman who needed a network of goons while the other horsemen clearly had their fair share of free time outside their normal schemes.
I'm pretty sure the title horseman is just simply that, a title and even Death regards it as nothing more. He allowed his powers to be akin to his brethren in that he has a conduit for his powers in the form of the ring but has shown he could easily reap someone without it.
The personality falls in line with all properly powerful versions of death who are less egotistical than they are "A matter of fact" about their role in the universe. Kinda like Myrukul from D&D who simple let three invaders claim his title cause he was so over the whole "Ruler aspect" while he retained quite a bit of power and simply stayed to guide them while still sorting the dead.
Sorry for the long rant but I love these depictions of "Death" because of how accurate they must be. Death makes much more sense as an indifferent omnipotent force that just exist and it's rare to see it properly rendered much less in a live action television show.

I love this version of Death. He's not just seemingly uncaring, he LITERALLY doesn't care. He's completely unbiased, and at no point is he not looking at the big picture. Such an amazing character. Not that Billie isn't great too, but the original Death is just awesome.

Every other character has a show of force, an impressive spectacle of power. Death snuffs someone in the same motion he uses to brush his shoulder.

This character is the epitome of "less is more." Never gets angry or tries any convoluted tricks to get what he wants, he demands respect and remains calm in all situations, even in his own demise.

They could have used CGI or some creepy sound effects to make Death seem more menacing, but they don't. Just simply Jullian Rigman's incredible acting and delivery of his lines and Dean shitting his pants is all that is necessary.

He died and as no one in existence had seen death die before, they assumed he was dead and he allowed the events that would of happened if he was dead happen, making it appear as though he died. More than likely he was trusting Dean to make the right decision (which is kinda stupid), because he had a very - I repeat - VERY dire situation with the first curse a.k.a. the Mark of Cain.
However I think he was just got rid off so that the emergence of Darkness would look more hopeless. The strong, almost omnipotent Death is nowhere, so there only help would be either one of the Archangels or God himself.

A perfectly written, acted, and filmed scene. One of the best I've ever seen, anywhere. Julian Richings and Jensen Ackles deserve awards for this scene, but so too do the writers.
I have no idea how the writers deserve an award for this. It's pretty campy dialogue that just makes me feel like the writers are beating me over the head with how dangerous they want me to think this character is.

Death is the best character in Spn, hands down. He's older than dirt, the most powerful being in the universe and casually calls The Devil a "bratty child with a temper tantrum".

The thing I love most about Julian Richings' Death is that, out of a lot of different iterations and appearances, his performance is the one that strikes me as being the _oldest._ A lot of versions can accurately portray Death as timeless or ageless, Death of the Endless comes across like that very well, but this one feels the most genuine. He's existed since before existence was a thing, and you can tell.
Why would he care about the time anyway? Death is a force of nature. Only way around it is to cease everything that is capable of observing from existing, since lifeless can't observe it's surroundings. I am not much into lore of Supernatural so I guess this does not matter in this series' case.

The first time I watched this scene, I misheard that line as 'God would like to, Dean' implying that God wants to die. I still hear that when I rewatch it and I take it as headcanon because that's so interesting and bleak
I think, for me at least, it's just how "matter of fact" it is. Like, to us (and Dean) it's a huge thing to hear. Literally mind blowing. But to Death? It's the same as saying "Today is Monday. "

To get the ring of War, Sam and Dean had to fight their confused allies. To get the ring of famine, Sam had to go back to demon blood. To get the ring of pestilence, they had to withstand a bunch of deadly diseases at once. To get the ring of death, Dean just had to eat pizza and have a conversation with death himself. It's truly ironic that the most powerful of the horseman is the one that gave hi a ring the easiest, but it really says something about his character
Technically, Death demanded that Dean be willing to give in and let Sam throw himself in the Cage to trap Lucifer. Death, like everyone else, knows Dean's no stranger to pain and dying, but his weakness is Sam, so he demands that Dean give up his "life" in exchange for the ring.
Dean'd make the "dickless" jokes to the Angels, continually make puns from Dick Roman's name, beat up on monsters that can throw him across the room with one arm. But during that whole chat, he looked like he was shitting himself internally. You know a Supernatural character is a badass if Dean doesn't want to mess with them.

I miss the original Death, how powerful and divine it is portrayed. That's probably one of the few times we saw Dean that scared.
Coming back to these videos after the final season makes me realize how good the first five seasons were.

They nailed it with casting for Death. He truly acts and has the looks of what I imagine Death to look like.

I realize you put this comment down 11 months ago, but I've been re-watching this scene and wanted to say how DAMN much I agree with you. It makes me sad that the y wrote him off like that. I honestly think he'd be the only character I'm okay with coming back at this point, simply because he's...death. He's never truly gone.

I always find it fascinating when immortal beings are portrayed in a human or humanoid form. The psychology of being as old as the universe is a concept I've always been obsessed with. I feel like this portrayal of death is so fucking badass, especially the line where he's like "Yeap, one day god will meet his end as well." and says it so matter-of-factly. Literally how I've always seen death personified, true neutral.
I still can't get over this scene. Early Death was absolutely perfect. The characterization, the casting, the dialougue, the DELIVERY...just impeccable.
This scene right here is honestly the main reason that I doubt the character (Death) is actually dead. He makes it clear here that he is responsible for not just Earth, but literally all death anywhere in the known universe. Now don't get me wrong, things have gotten bad on Supernatural before, but as Dean says here that's just a level far, far, FAR above the Winchester's paygrade. That'd honestly be akin to actually killing God. (Heck, they couldn't even kill Lucifer. They had to trap him.) I couldn't see the writers realistically trying to confront the catostrophe that'd result if Death wasn't around.

+Normal Commenter I don't think that Death is dead, only his vessel. What the reaper might have meant was, that Death will no longer help the Winchesters since Dean attacked him. Perhaps it is like when Sam attacks Crowley, where Crowley thanks Sam for reminding him who he really am, and so Death has returned to be the merciless primal force he was always meant to be. Killing Death goes to much against everything, even for Supernatural.

This is my favourite portrayal of Death by Julian Rigman because he acts "normal" and yet, he is one of the most powerfulness supernatural-type characters to ever walk who can cause you to instantly fear him without the need for typical violence!

I've seen this scene several times and ... oh my god it's as tense and powerful as the first time, every time. It *feels* like dancing on the edge of a knife over a thousand foot fall. Gets my adrenaline pumping and it's just two beings sitting in a bistro having a conversation. ... Now THAT is fucking *writing!* And acting! Hats off to both these gentlemen for their amaaaazing performances.

I think in whole SPN Angel arc, apart from Misha's Castiel and Mark's Lucifer, ( too many characters and they were just come and go angels.. didn't even get noticed ) Death is the most brilliantly written character of all. Death was portrait as wiser than God, older as God, and in the end he doesn't want to be extra scary because you have no way of avoiding him.. His dialogs were perfectly written, like one character that writers actually didn't get bored writing, they put some effort to it.. Specially him giving his ring to Dean and make him wear it for a day.. That scene and the concept was one of shows highlights for me.. Actor himself is brilliant in every way.. His delivery was spot on, clam, clear and deep, just like a wise old man who's seen so much... Not to forget the intro music.. Julian Richings as Death .. One of the best TV character choices to me..

(also, Pestilence is newer than book of revelations, he used to be Conquest... but well. The Black Pest kinda convinced people that Pest should be a Rider. Can't fault them I suppose)

Out of all the characters on the show both in the beginning and currently, this is by far still the best characterization of a supernatural entity. You can feel just how his level of power and influence isn't measured by strength or intellect. He is a force of nature, and the end of everything the true immortal
One of the many things this show got RIGHT, was how Death viewed all of humanity as tiny and insignificant. I would even take it a step further and say that if Death really existed, it would never bother to show itself on this tiny speck of a planet, just like you or I would never stop at an ant hill, to converse with the ants inside. Also, a human would never be able to kill Death, like Dean did. I rolled my eyes when Dean cut Death down with his own scythe (or whatever its called...). If Death exists, there would be no way to kill it, after all, its as old as the universe, perhaps older, one of the top dogs, as cosmic entities go. Its level of power is beyond our comprehension, theres definitely no way to kill it.
