Disagree mate, whilst I fully accept Red Run is and always will be one of the greats, Tiger Roll has proved himself worthy of being spoken about in that category. The Grand National may have been a harder course to jump round in Red Rums day, but the lower fences these days make it much more of a stamina test. Back in Red Rums day he had an advantage because he was a better jumper than everything else, so even if he was carrying top weight, he had a big edge on the rest. But the modern day national jumping isn’t as important, the race is more of a gruelling stamina test, so the likes of Tiger Roll who have had huge rises in the weights, are always at a big disadvantage
Pretty much all jumps horses are geldings, not just because it makes a horse more focused, but more because of the pain brushing your bollocks through fence after fence causes. So no Tiger Roll won’t be producing any offspring.

Rummy's triple victories can never be equalled, even if Tiger Roll triumphs again next year. The conditions in his day were far more challenging and the fences toweringly high and dangerous. That said, the race is still mightily difficult and gruelling for any horse to complete, let alone win. Tiger Roll is an amazingly good horse in the mould of Red Rum in my opinion, small yet strong with a nimble, economical jumping style. Congratulations to Tiger, Davy Russell and all concerned with Tiger's care at home.
Absolutely. Red Rum will always remain number 1 at Aintree regardless of how many more Tiger Roll or others were to win in the future. Becher's totally different (shame), and the distance isn't as long these days. The race is incomparable now. The weight Red Rum carried too was impressive as after his win in '73 he would carry top weight in his 4 remaining Nationals - 12-0, 12-0, 11-10 & 11-8. Of course 11-10 is the limit these days. Still a tremendous achievement from Tiger Roll and it's still a great day on the sporting calendar.
It's a tricky one as different eras. Red Rum and the National go hand in hand, but when you think Tiger Roll has 2 and also a multiple time Cheltenham Festival winner over trips ranging from 2 miles to 4 miles, arguably Tiger is the more classy racehorse overall.
Both great horses, very different times, silly to argue over who was better really, Tiger Roll shouldn't be disgraced because the fences aren't as big anymore
Horrible to see the horse that fell at the first flailing around in agony. They are such magnificent animals and their courage often brings me to tears RIP Up for review
Smallest horse in the race but with the biggest heart and the most talent, love this horse to bits he always gives everything in all his races, thought Davy Russell rode a peach of a race to get Tiger Roll tucked in and relaxed all the way round, and he didn't get too serious with him after the elbow just coaxing him home as if remembering last year when he just got home, so sad about the loss of Up for Review, don't matter that my 50p ew was on you RIP brave fella
I think he could go for 1 more win and make it 3 in a row and yes he's an amazing horse so much, a movie is in the awaiting future and I think Aintree should put something up for this horse just like Redrum
We're still awaiting a movie starring the greatest of them all, Red Rum! What a wonderful rags-to-riches saga that would be; can't understand why no-one has thought to transfer it onto the big screen as yet...
I loved the way he just effortlessly went past them. Like a cross between Red Rum/Frankel saying "Is that all you got". A great national this year not only for the back to back wins but because Tiger Roll has become public property and an iconic horse.
Grand National has now become a High class Hurdle race. The trickiest fence is the Canal Turn because of the 90 degree turn. Bechers and the Chair are nothing, in fact the Mildmay course takes more jumping. The only real challenge is the number of runners and eventually they will reduce it to 30 or 20 runners.
Rummy relished the challenge of those towering fences and would have scoffed at what remains today! That said, a great and historic race was run by Tiger Roll, winning comfortably and in great style.
He's probably looking down right now and wondering why you're talking like a completely ignorant idiot, Chris Mahoney. Red Rum was the greatest and will be remembered with awe and admiration always. Shame we can't say the same about you!!
I don't need to qualify what I've already written. Red Rum was incredible and what he achieved was phenomenal. You can't educate pork and I'm not going to try.

Paul loved your comment. Tiger Roll a little horse bred to run on the flat. It was amazing u be very proud to be Irish. Tiger came home with the trophy and he also brought history with it. Susan Maher
@Jacob Sibcy they are breed to do the sport. It was a fatal accident and we have a huge animal welfare keeping the horses safe before and after racing.
@Jacob Sibcy sure eventing there is more horses killed in that than horse racing. If horse racing is cruel the animal welfare wouldn't let horse racing happen.
@Jacob Sibcy if the animal welfare thinks its safe to have horse racing.. then its safe to do so. Its not only horse racing which has deaths, think about eventing. The word cruel is people dying in poor countries as they dont have food or water.
Tiger Roll's second win was on the cards especially after his cross country win at Cheltenham,I will have to say though that he ploughed through the 27th fence (ditch) which he wouldn't of got away with in pasture old. He is heading towards greatness if not already but to compare him with the likes of Red Rum is questionable. No one likes to see any horse die but come on 37 horses going into the second circuit after the fences were at their stiffest tells a big story with me.I would suggest this.As the inner plastic core has been in place for a while now, pack the fences more and bring back the drops, because if this isn't done then this race is heading if not already into a glorified handicap chase. I can now see a reduction with the size of the field being put forward as a solution to what happened at the first fence, this will only make the race more less of a lottery. This was one of my highlights of the year,it's not anymore I sadly have to say!
Spot on m8 .I backed the winner but he would never of got away with that say in 85 ,it turned into a brush hurdles race years ago .but that's not taking anything away from this remarkable little horse. And he's back safe and sound ..

It's almost sad to see them stream over what once was Becher's Brook as if it was a mere hurdle. Back in the old days the commentators used to get excited as they came to Becher's, Valentines, The Chair............they've stopped because race after race of the fields streaming over these fences as if they were nothing special ( and they are no longer anything special ) has made it seem a bit silly. Fair play to Tiger roll and it is still a fine race but it is not the Grand National and these are not grand national fences.
There isn't much of a drop at Becher's Brook these days. Jockeys would talk about leaping off the edge of the earth once their horses jumped Becher's back in the day. Now that fence along with the Canal Turn, Valentine's, the Chair, etc are less fearsome and cut to a medium height due to the modifications a few years ago. And this year 19 runners completed the course. 14 were pulled up and there were only 7 horses who fell/ brought down/unseated rider which has gotta be a record for the Grand National. Spare a thought though for Up For Review who tragically lost his life at the 1st fence. RIP 😔
@@TCDL11 Good points David. I think the drop at Becher's is now 10 inches. The fallers tend to be due to the overcrowding at the first or else getting tied up in the loose spruce. No slur on him its just that the race Red Rum rin has disappeared.
michael fisher Rip Up for View. However, it wasn't a fall it was a fatal accident. Up for View was taken down but a horse that slipped on the fence. Then after that, the other horse's trampled on Up For View, causing it to get serious injuries to the neck. Then as a result, it had to be killed.
By a Derby winner in Authorized, wins a triump hurdle for speedy juveniles over 2 miles to then win at 4 Cheltenham festivals and on to back to back GRAND nationals, this horse is a rare talent. Absolute legend. ❤️👍🏻🐎 Go on the Tiger!!!!
True,it's not a what people would want to see. I would nevertheless like to know how the tragedy actually happened because the horse was brought down rather than falling so it would appear that this was an accident with tragic consequences that could have happened at a race other than the Grand National.
Often horses that are brought down actually incur worse injuries. The last horse to die before 2019 was According To Pete and he was brought down by On His Own.

Wonderful renewal even though I prefer the race when it is rainy and the ground is muddy. But the downside is that the horses are more in danger and we all want the horses to be safe
Exceptionally low number of falls, all but three out of 40 were still running as far on as until the open ditch (fences 3 and 19) the second time round - not sure that's ever been the case before. Though just under half of the horses crossed the finish line, most of the drop-outs were pull-ups rather than falls, which is different to how it always used to be.
Tiger Roll a little legend, 2 grand nationals, 5 Cheltenham festival wins, a classy race horse with the will to win. Red rum will always be a legend associated with Aintree. Both these horses have special stories behind them. No matter what the fences are, its a very difficult race and safer.
@@David.L291 Definitely - but that pile-up was something to see - and the 100/1 horse got it. Dont gamble but kind of like watching horse racing - providing they dont get injured.
Shame the fences are a shadow of what they used to be. More falls back then but fewer fatalities. Falls and the survival feel of the National were what made it good. This year felt a bit tame
This is not going to be a popular statement, however, National Hunt racing is just too dangerous for these thoroughbreds. Very painful and brutal injuries these horses suffer, especially when they land on their heads and break their necks. I'll stick to the flats and if I want to watch stamina, I'll stick to the staying Cup races. Hats off to Tiger Roll, and the rest who finished the race.
Absolutely, I had money on Tiger Roll but found no joy on winning after what happened at the first fence. Tbh, I found all the euphoria afterwards a bit sickening.
@@vordman I don't have a problem with the euphoria surrounding Tiger Roll's historic achievement, but it is terribly sad that Up For Review was lost. I said oh no or something along those lines because as the field advanced towards the camera I could see in the background that the horse was hurt, kicking its legs unable to get up,and I hoped and prayed that he would be alright. When they had to bypass the fence second time round I feared the worst, which was confirmed soon afterwards. Details of what actually happened are scant as yet because they are likely to upset people, but as he was brought down rather than falling it appears it could have been a tragic accident rather than an issue about the course itself, which has undergone many changes to make it safer compared to what it was like even just several decades ago. The 1st fence has a track record of catching out one or two unwary, unitiated or just plain unfortunate competitors but - unlike the once extremely hazardous Becher's Brook - has not been the source of any fatalities that I can remember and I've watched and bet on the race since the 70s and can remember being dismayed as a kid by news of two horses being lost in one of those 70s races (I still remember the two horses's names,Winter Rain and Zeta's Son,because of that). The previous fatalities in 2012 that resulted in the last major safety changes came about as a result of fatalities at the 4th and 5th fences (20th and 21st on the second circuit) when those particular fences hadn't been the source of any such catastrophes in the previous years, decades even, running up to that.
@@Leediverify Thanks for that info. Just had a look over the stats, and they threw up a few things. They say that Synchronised fell at Becher's the first time round, continued riderless and crashed again at the 11th,and in the 2012 race another horse,AccodingToPete, died at Becher's the second time round, and a jockey broke his leg at the 5th which (as the 21st) had to be bypassed on the second circuit. That followed changes made following fatalities at the 4th and 6th (Becher's Brook) in 2011,after which in order to improve safety the landing side on the 1st was levelled out,the 4th rediced slightly in height and the huge drop on the landing side of Becher's reduced sgnificantly. Following the 2012 race the core of the fences was made softer and the starting run shortened to bring it much closer to the first fence than it used to be. Historically,Becher's has caused by far the greatest number of fatalities, just as I expected, but I was surprised to see that the far less infamous 4th (and 20th) has taken the next highest number, one ahead of the Canal Turn. Then, also unexpectedly to me,comes the 1st (and 17th) fence, which though usually claiming one or two as the 1st has caused the fourth highest number. It transpires that very nearly all the fatalities in the last two or three decades have occurred at those four fences, with the open ditch 3rd (or 19th) and Valentines the next most dangerous. Surprisingly, the feared hulk that is the Chair, where the only death of a jockey happened, hasn't caused an equine fatality for 40 years.
If you bet on Tiger Roll then you invested in the race knowing that very unfortunately accidents and sometimes sadly fatalities do occur. Yes, of course any death causes a shadow to be cast over an otherwise joyous occasion, and I felt the same, having bet on Tiger Roll myself. However, Tiger Roll's amazing double-backed second victory has catapulted him into the history books and should quite rightly be celebrated and marvelled at as a wonderful event.
I do like horse racing but seeing Up For Review writhing in agony was very hard to watch. I think there's a strong argument for reducing the amount of horses in the field to 30 so horses being brought down is less likely.
@@oldmanarockin He was trying to lift his head up from what I could see of it. I'm sure he was put down so that would mean he didn't die instantly. I've seen horses break their necks and die but still kick but this horse definitely looked like he was trying to raise himself up.
i'll repeat what I said. the thrashing of hind legs in 99.9 cases is simply nerves . I totally understand your thinking, but it looked to me like he broke his neck in the fall and again in many cases the horse would die instantly, and I have seen it at very close quarters in my 50 years within the industry. make no mistake, I don't like it, but just try and close horse racing down and see where it gets you. all my life I have given all of my kindness to thousands of horses from birth to death in the name of thoroughbred racing. and I have handled some really nasty creatures probably ill treated by people who handled them before they came into contact with me.
Ground conditions had eased a lot and with the fences as they are then everything will be that much faster. The way I see it is the National is in grave danger of descending if not already into a glorified handicap chase race.
Faster going, which happens on drier ground, tends to raise the risk of injurious accidents because of more of a dash for speed in my experience of watching and betting on the race. 1990,which had an exceptionally warm, dry spring, was a prime example. The exception to that was 1998,when pile-ups and sadly fatalities occured in soggy conditions.
Great race today but while a 4th bet on tiger roll was a success (having backed him in last year's national & last 2 Cheltenham Festivals), it's sad the race has its 1st equine fatality since 2012. Thoughts go to the connections of Up For Review.....
@@helenemillar7626 when red rum won in 73 most of the runners was outside of the handicap fast forward to this years race all the horses got in with there original handicap mark so the national is of a higher quality these days
They have made lots of alterations and conditions to make it safer. I just think they should have a really low fence at the first when all 40 horses are going at full speed and cant see the fence for other horses. Maybe the first should be a hurdle.
You had to off backed him prior to Cheltenham really, as his price dropped markedly after his demolition job in the CC. Had a great chance but not at 4-1 for me sadly.
Tiger roll is a pure legend and what this sport is all about, sad for Up for review but these horses are bred for this if there was no racing there would be no horses
No I am crying I know it’s been going on for long but my first time watching it 💔why do they wip the horse there not running so why hurt them there running not them
I realise horse racing will never be banned, there is too much MONEY involved for this to be a credible likelihood. What I don't understand is why the 'powers that be' enjoy making these beautiful animals jump at speed over fences/obstacles. If they insist on racing, then they should make it easier for the animals to just 'race' on the flat, obvious that such a powerful creature that has fragile lower legs will be susceptible to injuries when asked to jump unnecessary hurdles. I agree with other comments that these animals are very well looked after but it’s for the sole reason of racing them to win money, it's a business at the end of the day. It was so very upsetting to see 'Up for Review' thrashing about in such distress after falling at the first fence in the Grand National, he must have been in dreadful pain. It's said that the horses love racing but really, would they, if they knew they would die before the end of the race? It's humans that enter the horses into a race, not the horse itself, they don’t have a choice.
Kate your totally right. The horses do what humans tell them to do. They don't do it of their own volition. They are prey animals and their ability to run is built into their DNA to protect them from predators. Horses don't have the same view of racing as humans as they don't bet, they don't win money and they don't want to beat others, their instinct to run is to avoid predators. They are fantastic athletes and humans exploit their abilities for their own personal gain and in most cases without enough regard for the horse. Horses being injured and or euthanased in races should not be tolerated but it is an almost everyday occurrence. If racing is to continue extreme efforts need to be made by racing authorities to make it safe enough to protect the welfare of horses. If this can't be achieved then questions must be asked about whether or not racing should be allowed to continue. At present, to many ppl in racing see horse deaths as nothing more than a necessary evil and a price worth paying. Everybody in racing should see what happened on Saturday as something that has to stop and must be avoided at all costs. Then we can start to see the improvements we need to see if horse racing can be made safe enough to ensure horses don't face an agonizing death on the course being shot behind a few screens. I've followed horse racing since I was a child and I genuinely love horses. They are the most noble athletes I've ever seen and I'm dismayed at what happens to them all too often and how they are treated once they are unable to race with many being sent to slaughterhouses, which is also just plain wrong. Change is needed urgently.
Hugely exciting race. I know Jack Shit about horses but this race is magical. I got half my money back and I am happy. We just witnessed history! Can he do it again next year...?!!!
An impossible task to win it next year, as will go up another 8-10 pounds in the weights, but just to be in a position to go for a 3rd National shows what a special horse he is
Well most they can carry is 11’10 these days, but it’s what all his opposition will be carrying that will hinder him. He won off 159 today, so if he goes up to 167-169 for next year as I’d expect, the likes of Annibale Fly who was off 164 today and top weight will be getting weight off Tiger Roll rather than conceding it 5 pounds like he did today. Conceding weight to horses good enough to finish 2nd in Gold Cups is a mighty task, but if any horse can give it a go then Tiger Roll can, but it’s a massive ask, no doubt about that
The Grand National is a handicap race. All horses are given a rating based on their ability, Tiger Roll today won today off 159, let’s say for example he is racing against a horse who is rated 155, that means that horse carry’s 4 pounds less than he does. If he races against a horse off 164, like Annibale Fly the top weight, it means Annibale Fly carried 5 pound more than him today. Last year Tiger Roll won off 151, this year it was 159, as handicapper put him up in the weights for winning last year, so next year he will likely be off 167-169, so he will have a mighty task of winning again. This is why the Grand National is so difficult to win multiple times, as previous winners, and horses with a lot of ability have to carry more weight than the rest, so Tiger Rolls achievements to win twice are remarkable. The reason they have handicaps, is to make the racing more competitive, and to try to give all 40 horses a chance to win.
Never seen a horse run the grand national that easy.... I mean the rest of them didn't even look dangerous.... I wish I took that 5/1 on tiger roll so easy this year
if it wasn't for the fall and bd at the first and one pull up you would have had 40 horses out of 40 going onto the second circuit and still the animal rights people complain, the fences are ridiculously easy

Both great horses, very different times, silly to argue over who was better really, Tiger Roll shouldn't be disgraced because the fences aren't as big anymore
What a horse, very emotional at the end watching that. Such great history being made! WOO

Well thank you Tiger I knew you would win, fantastic ride by Davy Russell

Retire the little beaut let him live his life like a king the world loves him hes a legend
I couldn't agree more Mervyn, just like a well flavoured cake if you take out the main ingredients of the recipe all you are left with is a plain cake.
mervyn charter still fucking good though ffs. Enjoy it whilst it’s still left to run. It’s still a tough 4.1/2 miler😉
Tiger Roll is a legend!
I give all my respect to the person who was at the end almost the whole time but still kept in going 🙏
@JP Collider You're a fucking moron. Guarantee more dogs and cats were killed at "Animal shelters" than horses died at the races yesterday. To wish harm upon people because you're a salty snowflake who doesn't understand these animals are very well looked after shows your brain capacity is the size of a peanut. Yes, it's unfortunate few horses die but it is apart of the sport, unfortunately.

@Jacob Sibcy they are breed to do the sport. It was a fatal accident and we have a huge animal welfare keeping the horses safe before and after racing.
@@suemaher5282 thank you🏇, wonderful history for such a little horse
David Jones You're living in the past, mate. The more-enlightened public of today would never tolerate such a move. It would kill the event stone-dead. Civilization moves on.

...doubt whether Tiger Roll would have got away with those jumping errors over the old fences....these fences are very forgiving...
It is still a difficult race to win and no one wants to be cruel to horse or rider but old nostalgic lovers of the race such as I can't help but feel that whilst they can con the general public they can't con us..........hats off to Tiger Roll but he hasn't emulated red Rum. No slur on him its just that the race Red Rum rin has disappeared.

True,it's not a what people would want to see. I would nevertheless like to know how the tragedy actually happened because the horse was brought down rather than falling so it would appear that this was an accident with tragic consequences that could have happened at a race other than the Grand National.
It appears that the horse had hit the first fence pretty hard but managed to stay up only to collide with Vintage Clouds after he had fallen.

Though just under half of the horses crossed the finish line, most of the drop-outs were pull-ups rather than falls, which is different to how it always used to be.

Sleep well Up for Review x
@@rjjcms1I believe the horse that fell and died at the first in 2012 was called Sychronised, ridden by AP McCoy.

They cut instantly, where did you see it ‘writhe’ in agony
@@Scaro.s This clip is not the original TV broadcast. The original clip shows the horse kicking and thrashing in agony.
the kicking and thrashing is just nerves. as cruel as it looked, he was dead instantly.

I really thought that Rathvinden would win.
An impossible task to win it next year, as will go up another 8-10 pounds in the weights, but just to be in a position to go for a 3rd National shows what a special horse he is
@@MANUTD4LIFE171 He will definitely be lumbered with 12 stone next year.
As a very casual watcher of horse racing why is this the case?
The reason they have handicaps, is to make the racing more competitive, and to try to give all 40 horses a chance to win.
sad to say we won't see Tiger Roll win The third Grand National at Aintree
Never seen a horse run the grand national that easy.... I mean the rest of them didn't even look dangerous.... I wish I took that 5/1 on tiger roll so easy this year
I got 5/1 but I did him each way but tbh it was great to see him win
@@David.L291 I had £250 on Lake view lad at 14/1...pulled up like 10 fences in
if it wasn't for the fall and bd at the first and one pull up you would have had 40 horses out of 40 going onto the second circuit and still the animal rights people complain, the fences are ridiculously easy
..they are an embarrassment....but tradition has it that presenters stand next to these fences to show the world how "big" these fences are...
Who else watched this on Saturday??
Bookies had to pay out 1/4 Billion quid . Well and truly stuffed em.
Where did you get that figure ?
angelandsoul Soul up your arse
@@angelandsoulsoul2924 This is what Betfair said "" The quarter-of-a-billion-pound bombshell has landed. Tiger Roll has gone back to back and inflicted the most expensive result in Grand National history. ""
I don't imagine so considering this was the shortest price favourite for 10 years, so very few backed him. Meaning the bookies probably made most on people backing rathvinden, rock the kasbah and vintage clouds.
999LDS sure they make that weekly anyway so they’re down a week’s wages out of 52😂😂
Red rum brother tiger roll.
Jockey certainly not sparing the whip on the run in even though he's well in front.
Tiger roll smashes through these easier fences, doubt he would of won over original solid fences
I found the euphoria at this "event" truly sickening. All those cheery faces trying to pretend a horse had not died horribly in front of their very eyes. Would they just have ignored a jockey dying? No. And btw, I'm a fucking hypocrite, I bet on the race and had the winner. But I won't be bothering next year.
Okay, so.
People will hate me and I know that.
First, congrats Tiger Roll.
Second, Rest in piece "Up for view".
In my opinion, I like The Grand National.
BUT
The fences trouble me, they are too tall and in width wise they are too large.
I also believe, the number of horse's is too much. Up the view died as a result of a horse falling over the fence, taking down Up for view. Then the other horses had no other space to go so they had to trample on Up for View.
Cause serious neck injury and then result in death.
Its fools like you that have ruined this great race you don't even know the horses name
Had £50 EW on Vintage Clouds hahahaha
Tiger Tiger
Credit must go to Gordon Elliott. A three times a Grand National winning trainer, entered 50 million horses in this year's race.....hahahaha 😂😂😂!!!
Btw is it me or does Gordon Elliott bear an uncanny resemblance to Adrian Chiles? I think he does you know. Lol 😂😂😂!!!
Those brush hurdles may as well not. be there....
Nick Mannion a horse died...
