      +The Turkish Guy_ The ivies dont want the most perfect kids, they want the most hard-working, ambitious, driven kids. Just cause you dont have a super high SAT or GPA doesnt mean you cant get in. Im going to Emory for premed, which may not be an ivy but it isnt too far off, and I got in with a 1930 SAT and 29 ACT, 3.8 GPA with 8 APs.

    I've always been "number two" when it comes to everything. No matter how hard I work, the smart kids in my school will always do better than me. I'm currently a freshman in high school and although I have a long way to go before college, it really upsets me how I can't be better than others. My dream has always been getting into an Ivy League but upon entering high school, the chances are appearing to be slim.

    • @yesreneau
      @yesreneau  10 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      Try not to compare your journey with others'. Take it from the girl who thought she was hot stuff before she went to Harvard: there will always be someone better than you at something. There are so many different paths to "success" and so many different definitions of success, that you shouldn't let it get you down if you appear (keyword: appear) to be struggling at something that comes easier to others.

    My dream is to go to Harvard, not only just attend but to be what is expected of all Harvard's students. While visiting Harvard, I witnessed people that were extremely unique with their confidence shown in their every movement as if they were unbreakable. As a freshman in high school, I only dream to be such a character, but for now, what I really need to do is to find who I am and to be comfortable with doing that. I want to be like those Harvard students because I truly believe that they're the ones that impact the world for the greater good. I am aware that I have three years until I start applying to colleges but I am also aware that just because I don't get in, doesn't mean my life is over, it just means that another college would love to have me. I hope you guys are all aware of that and I am glad we have YesReneau to be the one that makes this world a better place.

      20% of the kids going to harvard are going for free. full ride if your family makes under 65,000 a year, and most ivies have free tuition under 120,000 a year. they're honestly more affordable for middle class people than some state schools are.

    • @GreatCollegeAdvice
      @GreatCollegeAdvice 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But only if you can get in. And if you're poor, it's a LOT harder to get into Harvard than if you are rich. Consider these other facts: 48% of students pay full price. Only 12% of students receive Pell Grants (which are given to students who meet Federal criteria for poverty). So by your statistics (the source of which is unclear), only about 8% of the student fall into that "middle class" definition. And while the US government is the source of these statistics, it's hard to know exactly how Harvard is allocating all that aid. Yes, Harvard is affordable. To the few that Harvard DECIDES will receive Willy Wonka's Golden Tickets. The rest of the world goes elsewhere and pays "less affordable" tuition (those poor wretches...).

    This is exactly why admissions in UK are so much more objective. I mean the SATs aren't serious. Have you even seen the math section? It's 9th grade material if not lower. However the ridiculously phrased questions confuse people and a couple of mistakes take your grade down by 30-50 marks. It's not that hard to cram for the exams which is why you get so many competent and shiny results. At Cambridge or Oxford though... If you have IB/AP with good enough grades (or equivalent in different systems) you take one additional test the STEP, MAT or some other thing which is specifically designed to figure out which one of the applicants is actually shiny. I mean in STEP you get 13 math problems choose 6 and if you write 3 correctly you are most definitely in the 80+ th percentile. And even that isn't enough, later on you have an interview, in which they also give you a couple problems and talk to you to see first person how you think. And do not rely on an essay, which was polished, proofread, given to professors to make better word choices during 2-3 weeks. And after all that you get shortage of students. So they have to go for second choices.. I mean it's damn hard, but after you get the result you know EXACTLY why did you succeed or fail and not make guesses like "maybe they didn't like mt essay".

      +Félix “Lt. Gen. Jack O'Neill” Veilleux-Ouellet studies consistently show that grit and the ability to work hard outweigh any intelligence level. It's the work ethic that makes you. The Harvard admissions department can sniff out the lazy intellectuals a mile away.

    • @DiscipleOfHeavyMeta1
      @DiscipleOfHeavyMeta1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MysticBazooka If you can become world class through hard work excellent work ethics, it usually means you have a high IQ. There might be some outliers here and there, but IQ is also a huge factor.

      I see your point that many people won't make it into Harvard as it's just that exclusive. but that doesn't mean people shouldn't try. After all, that's what life is about isn't it, constantly improving upon yourself to become a better person. :)

    • @DiscipleOfHeavyMeta1
      @DiscipleOfHeavyMeta1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      MysticBazooka Gotta be realistic buddy. Most people aren't good enough for Harvard. I'm not affraid to admit it: I'm not good enough for prestigious universities like Harvard. Not worthy of it. That's life. Some people are just better and smarter than others and that's just the truth. People aren't equal.

    I'm not here to hate on Harvard (I don't get your college system anyways) but I didn't care for the reputation of my university when I applied. I chose the one near my home. It wasn't like I couldn't have gotten in anywhere else (I could have gotten into most universities) but - like you said - you can become successful regardless of what school you go to. And I know that it can be a serious advantage to have a degree from a certain college/ uni because the best only pick the best so they ought to be good (in an ideal world at least..but that's a different topic).
    But where I come from the system is not as extreme as in the US.

I know that sounds like such a "duh" thing to say but after I found something (more like someone) who made me want to work hard I realized that doing homework became fun! Ever 100% I got felt like one step closer to Harvard! I found this video very informative and I will try to use what I learned in this video to fit me best. (New subscriber alert!)

      Josie Amayrani You're underestimating how important teacher and counselor recs are. Dean of Harvard admissions said theyre even more important than grades. Even if the teachers like you, there's no guarantee they wrote you stellar recs. You wouldn't know either bec. accdg to the law, you cant read them. Also, curriculum is key. Also, it's not about the position you got in the club, it's WHAT YOU DID with that position. Did you give free workshops for ex.? Did you host a big event? Did you organize a conference? etc... I hope you got into a great school though

      Maria Kyna Cortez That's true; I had my APUSH teacher and the decathlon coach write my letters of recommendation. Both were about community service but both were types of honor societies. We hosted events and such. I decided to stay closer to home and go to a UC.

    What really helped her stand out were her abilities to project her personality through her videos. She has very high levels of enthusiasm and self-confidence, and the ability to talk to an audience coherently, without using awkward pauses, "duhs", and other crutches to cover any mental lapses when on camera. In other words, she can organize her thoughts while speaking, she projects well and presents her thoughts and ideas in an entertaining manner, which is lacking in most students her age.
    She has a future in sales, in the courtroom as a trial lawyer, in the TV/movie entertainment industry, or running a company. Even though she does not appear to want to be a rocket scientist, I'll bet she could explain rocket science to any audience after a short interview with a rocket scientist. If Harvard saw her on video as part of the application process, that would explain why she was admitted. Many smart people are dull and have no social skills. she is not limited in those areas.

    Examples of extracurriculars that help you get into Harvard: Boys/Girls Nation (not state...nation), Eagle Scout, Debate Team Captain, Sports Team Captain, Class President or Student Body President, Black belt in a martial art, Cheerleading Captain (yes, cheerleading really helps), creating phone apps or other software that becomes popular (especially if you're a girl), having scientific research published in a peer-reviewed journal with you as a lead author, being conductor of an orchestra. Starting clubs or organizations doesn't help much because it's very common nowadays. 20-30 years ago, it helped a little.
    Basically, find a couple of activities you're really interested in and go after the top level of leadership and accomplishment in those couple of activities.
    Things that really don't help much for Harvard: Starting a club or organization that you are "president" of (unless it's something that really became big on a state or national level, not just your school), volunteering, tutoring, mentoring, random clubs (FBLA, HOSA, chess club, math club, etc.), summer camps and programs (unless they are extremely selective and prestigious like TASP or Research Science Institute...usually those types of programs are free), and "leadership programs/retreats/institutes." In the summer, it would be better to take challenging courses (in Calculus, English Lit, U.S. History, etc.) at a nearby 4-year university and get As in them...that would look good, especially if the courses are in the subject you plan on concentrating (i.e. majoring) in at Harvard.
    Hopefully you have near-perfect (or perfect) grades and test scores. Being #1 or #2 in your class looks good. If you've taken AP or IB exams, it looks good to show them a bunch of 5s (or 7s on IB exams), and nothing below a 4 (6 on IB). It helps (a little) to be from an underrepresented state like Mississippi or Wyoming. It helps to express interest in an unpopular concentration like Linguistics or Anthropology, especially if your interest for that subject shows in your essays or activities. It helps to be a girl interested in a STEM major as long as your grades and test scores strongly back up your STEM ability.
    Oh, and if you're poor or even middle class (family income less than ~$70k or so), that helps quite a bit. Incorporate that into your essays somehow. Yes, they could just look on your FAFSA form to see your family's income, but they really like kids from poor or middle class (not upper middle, haha) backgrounds. They like kids who overcame adversity or lack of opportunities in their communities and schools. This won't overcome less than great grades and test scores, but it will definitely help.
    And if you don't get in, it's fine, really. Harvard (or Yale or any other school) is FAR from a guarantee of any success in life. You will have to make your own success in life regardless of where you graduate from college.

    • @joseurriola3860
      @joseurriola3860 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Lin Not really, basically it depends on what the people around you have since they're kind of your direct competition most of the time.
      Like if everyone around you has over 2300 and you have 2100 then maybe you want to get closer to like 2250.
      Or on grades, if your school does weighted GPA then it's probably wise to stack up on lots of classes even if you're not terribly interested in a few: call it "broadening your horizons" or "seeing what's out there" instead of "this is an arms race" because no one actually believes you really were that interested in taking 15 different AP classes without going in depth into what you really liked like maybe a course on creative writing(ehem brings down my GPA).
      Even when you're in college, people are into solid stats and things that can tell a story not necessarily trying to do everything in a few years for the sake of competition.

      People have gotten into Ivy League schools with 1700 and 1800s on their Sats. They also take into account if you're from a disadvantaged group or went to a public school where is much less likely for you to get a 2350 on your Sats. And your extracurricular and accomplishments matter more than your test scores.

    I am a senior High School Student who lives in Mexico. I attend to a private school there in my hometown and since no more than 3 months I started caring about my grades. And let me tell you all, before that i was the most mediocre student in my generation. Now it is actually too late to fix that up, and any attempt to go to a foreign University is wasted time. Do not think school is stupid and that grades don't matter, because numbers may not define us, but in this case they actually can put us in the radar of a good University. As for me, I'll study law and I will acomplish all my goals. I am definetly not falling into the same mistakes.

    Can good AP scores help me go to a top "university" such as Harvard? Or it only makes me get placed in deifferent classes? Some good advice related to the topic will be appreciated.

    • @sophiarichardson9105

      +Pedro Lopes No, but good spelling sure will.

    • @xxxXLopesXxxx
      @xxxXLopesXxxx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sophia Richardson I was doubtful when choosing between "help me go to a top university" and "help me go to top universities", and I unfortunately ended up mixing the two. I'd like to make the point, however, that writing "universitie" instaed of "university" in this case represents an insignificant mistake, because the mistake only corcerned spelling. In essence, it didn't compromise the actual meaning of the question.
      Your response, in spite of that, was neither thoughtful nor provided any help. You simply replied "no" and rightaway got off topic, without a proper explanation for your allegation that AP scores will not help me reach the goal of getting into a "top university".
      Another thing we should take into consideration is that the internet is a place where everybody in the world can connect, regardless of external factors. So you might be talking to someone whose native language is not English. In that case, I humbly suggest you be less arrogant, becuase the person does not have the obligation to write perfectly in a language that is not present in her/his daily life while commenting in a TH-cam video's comment section, a very informal environment at the core.
      I will correct the mistake in spite of what I said in order to prevent more people from giving me this kind of unsolicited advice, which is of little use and does not answer the question posed.

      You can exempt a few classes you wouldnt like to take, for example, I got a 5 on AP Lang, so I don't have to take the intro Lit class at Emory. Same thing for APUSH (AP US History). you can still take those classes youre able to exempt if you want. Certain colleges take certain scores. For example, at GA Tech, they accept 4s for Lit, but only 5's for physics courses, and not even all physics courses. I dont know the AP credit system at Harvard but yeah. It will help you get in because even if people say colleges dont see them, if you present them they do. So if they see a ton of 5's, that's awesome. I wouldn't send 2's or some 3's, but that's personal preference. So as an admissions officer, if you see a ton of 5's, they will take it into consideration. Maybe they say the don't, but how could they not when you show them? We are human, we do not delete information because we say it won't be taken into consideration.

    Guys I know I might sound stupid but I just recently started 10th grade and I have started getting to know about colleges and how to get my chances higher. So I wanted to know how good my chances are to get into universities like Harvard. I'm in 10 grade and I have a 3.5 gpa I take algebra 2 pre ap and geometry honors at the same time. English 2 honors, and biology honors. I have done all my high school credits, and I am doing my second year of Spanish and I am planning to take ap Spanish 11th grade and also take ap bio. I also plan to take ap Chem 12th grade an calculus bc 12 grade. I right now have 100 community hours. And for my ec I play varsity soccer and I'm not currently apart of any clubs but I plan on joining a math club or something in 11th grade cause I really lik math. With the criteria I have listed above what are the chances of me getting into a top ivy-league school. Take into consideration I have not taken sat/act yet due to the fact I'm a sophomore.

    Thank you for this video. I relate to you in many ways, I also live in Ohio and love art and other activities. I have been wanting to go to Harvard for a while and was very fearful about the fact that I live in Ohio thinking that they wouldn’t except me for living in a rural area, but you have given me more hope for the future, thank you again.

    I'm in 8th grade, my GPA is a 4.1 and my reading level is a 12th grade reading level. I'm preparing for college early and trying to figure out what college I want to go to and I believe it is harvard medical school. This video helped with my preparations so thank you.

      dont do it. look at each school, and their average gpa and act scores. Then decide if you have a chance of getting in

    I know I have a few years before I have to worry about any of this considering I'm getting ready to be a Freshman in high school, but, my dream is to go to Harvard one day to be somewhere in the medical field. And with me also being a teenage girl living in the suburbs of Ohio, people always tell me that it will be almost impossible to reach my goal because the classes my school offers aren't "advanced" enough. But anyway, I'm taking all your advice and focusing on my grades as much as I can because I want to achieve this goal! Your advice is very helpful, so thank you!
