There is just so much going on in this song. There are more riffs firing off per minute than most other bands will have across a whole record.
Jehu was a general who was intent on murdering his king and seizing the throne. One of the lookouts in the palace reported that he spotted a charioteer coming down the road who "drives like Jehu". The "Rome Plows" refers to the Roman practice of leveling the capital cities of their most serious opponents and ceremonially plowing the ruins and sowing them with salt to symbolize that their enemies would never rise up against them (Carthage and Jerusalem notably received this treatment).
Educational comments should always get a like. 🙂
This is incorrect, though. The Rome plows were huge armored bulldozers used by the U.S. army in Vietnam to quickly clear vegetation. The album's name ("Yank Crime") comes from America's brutality towards Vietnam during the war, and the Rome plows (an unstoppable machine with the sole purpose of destruction) were one of the most salient metaphors for this.
Look it up if you don't believe me!
@@mattbonaccio3522 Makes sense; thanks.
I have to say, there is no other reaction video person more detailed and considerate of each song you review. I’ve literally listened to dozens of others, but you are the top person. JP, your alright!
Completely agree, JP goes way more in depth than any other reactor I've ever seen, it's awesome
try bop the poppop
Thanks JP for the reaction.I appreciate the person who recommended this. Love me some Drive Like Jehu. John Reis aka Speedo has been in a bunch of bands that I really like. Back Off Cupids, The Sultans, Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt, The Night Marchers.
Drive Like Jehu was one of the first bands put together by John Reis, a cornerstone figure in the San Diego punk and hardcore scenes. Him and the other guitarist/lead singer, Rick Froberg, who also played in three other Reis bands (Pitchfork, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes), met at an anarchist meetup advertised by a local punk magazine. You might be able to understand the lyrics a bit more from that perspective. Both were young and somewhat angry anarchists who were disillusioned with suburban and corporate America.
DLJ was influenced by the hardcore staples of the day (Fugazi, Husker Du) as well as some 'noisier' and math-y bands like Honor Role, Sonic Youth, and Bastro. DLJ was the most "artsy" band from John Reis. They played long songs with lots of harsh noise, distortion, and odd time sigs/rhythms.
If you like their sound, one other band that is very similar is Unwound, they are closer to true noise rock than post-hardcore but still very influential in the punk community.
Spiky and angular and I like it!
I hated the vocals for the first two minutes or so, but something clicked for me and it fell into place. Yeah, I could see myself head-nodding away to several more tracks like this.
whole album Yank Crime is IT
Okay, this has to be more obscure than anything I have recommended.
YOU REACTED TO DRIVE LIKE JEHU AND I MISSED IT?!?!?! So glad I found this today, Justin! I used to listen to Drive Like Jehu all the time....they have a special place in my heart. Some great DLJ songs are "Do You Compute?" and "If It Kills You" -- both are worth listening to and are more melodic than this one (but still noisy) -- they're still on my playlists. Cheers!
One of the best bands ever
Love all the progheads in these comments who feel the need to tell us this isn't their cup of tea lmao. It's very early post-hardcore; the screaming and the discordant riffs come with the territory. It's like complaining about time signature changes on a prog song. Anyways, great band, powerful song, love ya JP.
It's not the simplicity, it's just that this kind of music isn't very, well, musical to us.
@@pentagrammaton6793Haha! 90% of the time I want to comment you have taken the words out of my mouth. I'm sure I am not alone in this. Thanks👍🎷🎹🎸✌️
😂 It is so predictable.
@@pentagrammaton6793 It IS musical. You're just not used to post hardcore. If you've never heard math rock or post hardcore from this decade they purposely make it dissonant. Once you listen to more bands from this decade like Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, Don Caballero, then it might click for you.
@pentagrammaton6793 surprised you guys don't hear the king crimson like riffs in this band, is that band not musical to you guys
Yes, please! :-)
For some reason it's making me think of *Spin the Black Circle* by *Pearl Jam* (while at the same time immediately disagreeing with this impression, because there are things in Here Come the Rome Plows that you know you're only going to properly hear on a later listen, one day, whereas the Pearl Jam blast plays it safe(r) on the chords and dischords buried down the bottom of it all. (I tend to like songs that have stuff hidden deep inside that starts out near inaudible, and slowly becomes what you hear through a foreground you heed less and less.)
Anyway, the song should give you some very rough idea of what to expect from this: th-cam.com/video/T3oMcrqDn_4/w-d-xo.html
(I almost remember you doing a reaction to this, now, though? Could well be. On JustJP, Anything is Possible!) You might want to take counsel on whether to do a reaction to it?
After this I went and listened to Caress (excellent song, btw!!) from their self-titled debut. I'm pretty sure I knew it was "old", but I was honestly surprised to see it was from '91! It seems so ahead of its time. When you have a moment, do give it a listen!
I really like your description “discordant guitars”. That style of playing appeals to me. Overall, I like it and am adding it to a playlist. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Nice Surprise!
@@Katehowe3010 What tracks do you recommend?
Try "Do You Compute?" and "If It Kills You" by this band. They're my favorite songs by Drive Like Jehu. There are certainly more, but I haven't listened to them in YEARS.
@@manualboyca Thanks, I’ll check them out.
@@jaybird4093 honestly, if you want, just try out their whole discography, it's very short (2 albums and a single)
Funny you mentioned Fripp and KC. KC is one of my all-time favorites as well, with Rick Froberg and John Reis sharing spots next to Robert Fripp as some my favorite guitar players of all-time.
This song is Punk as it gets. When I say punk I am not talking about the style of music, but the fact they broke all the rules of any conventional song structure and basically played what they wanted.
Pretty dope track.
This is just such a banger, but Sinews remains my favorite.
This is brilliant. Very technical drumming. Great vocals. You should do an album review of Cro Mags, the age of quarrel.. 👍🏻
absolutely love jehu
great brain scratcher
Spot on with the King Crimson influence, especially "Red"- era KC. Very knotty, dissonant post-hardcore/math rock
Justin, been awhile. I see ur still going strong. here is a song that rips it up and will absolutely shock you. Girl Goodbye from Toto. Off the first album, great hard rocker, epic vocal with a scream that will make Roger Daltrey jealous. Keep on keepin on Buddy!
In contrast to this style I would love to hear your take on “ Closer to Believing “ on ELP Works Vol. 1
Is that my mother on the phone ?
Sounds like At the Drive In took some inspiration from this band.
Yeah Jim Ward has an interview with Froberg saying that he admired DLJ.
No way you did this one O_O Wow
thanks for listening to a wide variety of music no matter what
pretty funny seeing the prog-heads confused in the comments
React to Luau Justin! In my opinion the superior track, the progression is far more interesting and the guitar work is unlike anything else I’ve heard. Also, in general I’d love to see more post-hardcore reactions on the channel. Keep up the great work!
Mr Justin, if you react to "Luau" from this band I'm gonna sh&t myself from happiness. Just so you know 😇

Can I recommend "Ghost Rider" by Suicide or "Dead Mans Curve" by Nash the Slash or even "Jesus Built My Hotrod" by Ministry
If people like this music then I'm happy for them. It's not really for me.
What a contrast to Genesis previously !!! ...however there too for me it will be a big NO.
Not something I'd listen to of my own volition.
No, not for me.
Uhmm, next. I’m too old for this shhh.
Yep. This is music for the young and angry. I am old.
@@maruad7577
Old and over it.
@@-davidolivares th-cam.com/video/9kC4Sx-WuNE/w-d-xo.html
You should have gotten into it at the time. It came out in ‘94.
@@itsMrNoble
Maybe, may not be my personal taste.
Not heard of these, and I've heard worse. It's loud, and not a lot happens, I can take it or leave it. If I'd heard it when it came out I'd probably have loved it, but now... meh.
Godawful noise without purpose or craft.
What a stupid comment
Brain dead comment without thought or taste
yikes. this is quintessential punk music
Far from it bro, I highly suggest you check out some other songs perhaps Luau or Sinews… they are definitely like a punk/emo/hardcore/noise rock sounding band, but they are actually brilliant. And they were a very passionate influential underground band.
If you like the wild array of different creative bands that came out of the 90’s, they are absolutely worth the shot
yeah no, anyways
