DC plane crash: Was altitude of Black Hawk helicopter to blame for deadly collision?

  • As the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has officially collected black boxes from the crash site of the tragic mid-air collision between an American Airlines jet and a military Black Hawk helicopter, investigators are one step closer to determining how the tragedy took place just outside Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
Global’s Miranda Anthistle speaks with former American Airlines pilot Richard Levy to get more information from the perspective of an aviation expert.
Levy says the Black Hawk helicopter should have been flying no higher than an altitude of 200ft, however, it may have surpassed 300ft.
He also speaks about the staffing situation at the Air Control Tower.
The plane, flying from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while three soldiers were aboard the helicopter. No one survived.

Gross negligence, Failure to advise Blackhawke
“Check your 10 o clock ” inbound flight!!! Not once did air traffic indicate the position of this incoming flight to the helicopter! Whether it be rain fog sun in your eyes or a clear sky it doesn’t matter. Air traffic control must indicate the position of the incoming flight to the chopper. As it got closer. You do not understand how easy it is to see a plane land on runway 33 and then go on? It was 2000 feet away from runway. They did not have to check the whole space, they only had to check a small area just in front of them.
"The chopper clearly had a visual on the outbound flight" Not from runway 33, far away, why would ATC ever warn for that plane? That plane was miles away. Did helo crew not know at all what planes are doing?
Other people suggest they did see another incoming plane far away. But why wait for that plane? It was far away. Ohhh, they did not wait.

The pilot flying from my understanding had a little less than 500 hours so what that tells me is she had trouble maintaining her altitude. It's nothing for a helicopter going 110 kts at that low altitude to balloon up 100 ft or so. When you have low hours it's hard to maintain a steady altitude especially in a helicopter with that much power

The helicopter pilot requested ‘visual separation’. This means that he has sight on the plane in question and doesn’t need ATC guidance. The planes were in line for landing. It is thought that the helicopter pilot saw the plane in line after the American Airline plane they collided with. This makes the most sense with the recordings and flight patterns.

So here's where I'm nervous as a Canadian. PAT25 is one of the most elite flights on the planet. From what I understand, they're military in service of government and top-brass officials for special security flights. That Blackhawk in Washington D.C. is navigating the world's most secure airspace, didn't care, and by God's hand had an inglorious mid-air collision with normal civilian air traffic operating under less than amicable tower conditions. Meanwhile on the Canadian border, the less than comparatively practiced RCMP have rented two Blackhawk helicopters for anti-immigration and anti-drug pretext because Parliament wants to pacify Trump's tariff threats. If the world's most elite soldiers can't fly this aircraft that low in such secure airspace, why are we letting the police for pseudo-tactical exposition flying? Why are we not reasonably alarmed by this?

One that had just passed in front of the helicopter, at their 2 to 3-o'clock position, and one on approach, at approximately their 11-o'clock position. After asking if they saw the passenger aircraft; the ATC told the helicopter to "go behind" the passenger aircraft. But did NOT specify which passenger aircraft to "go behind". Unfortunately it was not specific enough. Going behind the aircraft on their (now 3-o'clock) position, took them into the flight path of the one on approach. (Just my opinion, after watching the videos.)

It was the fault of DC. It sounds like they shouldn't change course for American air lines. And they shouldn't said what they did. There's been a lot of mistakes ever since COVID with flights lay layovers. It's been a mess. If you look all over the internet for the past year it's been a mess

What is to blame is helicopter never saw the passenger jet just a few hundred feet in front of them. They were focused on a different jet landing on 01 about a mile away. They thought they were well clear. At night you don't see the other plane. All you see are lights. They lights from the plane they hit blended in with all the bright lights on the ground

Good expert. Some on other networks seem quite clueless and their interviewers aren't skilled enough to understand.
What seems extraordinaryis that the 3rd crew member's name is being withheld. I could see the Army waiting to notify their family, yet unfortunately Soldiers have even less right to privacy (unless they are on some covert, off shore, mission) than the FAA Certified pilots have. I can see withholding passenger names at their bereaved family's request. Yet, I don't see how, unless the Army is still trying to locate family, they can withhold such information. Just a name, not a biography or other personal information. Whatever this is about my heart goes out to all involved and may all Rest in Peaces. May God bless all in service and especially the ones, like this crew, gave the final measure of devotion. Heartbraking.
