Indian Female Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari has marked a new era for India at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Lifting 240 KG, Karnam created history by winning India's first Olympic Medal in Weightlifting, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic Medal ever! Sadly in a country where cricket has overshadowed every other sport, her achievements are now forgotten. Most Indians won't even know that she was the first woman from India to win an Olympic medal. Till date it remains the only weightlifting medal for India at the Olympics.
Edit: After 21 years, Mirabai Chanu makes us proud by winning 2nd overall and 1st Silver medal in Weightlifting for India at the Olympics.

When I was a 7 years kid I had see malleswari madam in many tv channels back then I don't know about Olympics but now knowing about Olympics I realise how great she is...I'm from Andhra Pradesh...so I feel really proud.

@@hasmituchil5214 yes i read that news. Some leverage is given to host countries as they can decide to drop a game in which they do not excel and add more events for the games in which they excel. Hopefully boxing and wrestling not to be removed as India always have medals hopes in these events

Heard that she used to practice by lifting rocks in her village before getting trained professionally. Because of the mistake made by her coach, she lost gold. However, winning a bronze wasn’t a small thing. I still remember that day she won the medal. She’s the pride of Andhra n pride of India! 🇮🇳

I was a kid when she won bronze..it was the only 1 medal for India in 2000 Sydney Olympics. I do remember she was received by Atal Bihari Bajapayi ji then PM at Delhi Airport..
I watched it live on TV and was felt so happy..i was 14 then.

Karnam Malleshwari is the athlete who boost confidence in women's wrestling in India.
She inspired many women weightlifters from India. Unfortunately, some of them were barred because of doping. Otherwise there was possibility of medal before Chanu. However, Chanu deserves medal and we must not forget that it was Malleshwari who introduced weightlifting to India.
