A New York Accent is completely different from a person from Alabama or Minnesota. A Boston accent sounds completely different from the generic american accent. Bostonians drop their Rs while other american have rhotic accents pronouncing their Rs. New Yorkers drop their Rs too. I'm a New Yorker myself living in Brooklyn and we have heavy accents. We pronounce dog,thought,over,here, and car as dawg,thawght,ova,heah,and cah.
American accents are VERY different. A person from rural West Virginia sounds nothing like a person from rural Maine, and you wouldn't understand someone from Appalachia as well as someone from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania even though both places are relatively close to each other.
You have Appalachian accent,Texan accent,old southern accent,Midwest accent,Valley accent,country accent,western accent,New York accent,New England accent,Boston Accent,Baltimore accent,and Creole Louisiana accent.

Depends how much you hear them. I'm American but I watch a fair bit of British TV and I can tell the accents apart reasonably easily.
I can tell the different accents in the USA and I am British.
Sarah Gonzales There's a big difference between accents from LA, NY, midwest and the dirty south to name just a few. All these British accents sound way more similar.
GroovinFunk I'd disagree about the British accents sounding more similar. It's just a matter of how much you hear them and how much practice you have at telling them apart.

How can you compare a London (city) accent to a Scottish (country) accent? There are loads of totally different Scottish accents, as there are within England.
With that argument you cant impersonate an American accent, Irish accent, Australian accent etc. I don't know if you're American but if you weren't you probably wouldn't know the difference between a Philly and Baltimore accent. But you would still know they both were American.
