Hey! I my dream school is Uchicago SOM. I had a question regarding the curriculum throughout the first two years. I go to UCSD and when I looked at their school of medicine (just for reference) I noticed that they’re very focused on organ systems mostly for their first two years. However UChicago has more broad classes and begins to implement clinical and more social / medical health related courses as well. I love that they do this as someone who loves being involved with health disparities issues and branches of medicine. However I’m wondering when you learn all the systems (like ucsd curriculum ) and how That distributed on top of the other classes. Do you like this better ? Any downsides?
hey! you're absolutely right that Pritzker incorporates disparities and social medicine into the curriculum during the first two years. we take these courses concurrently with our organ-based science classes. for example, in the fall we took anatomy and health disparities class at the same time. i can't speak at all to the UCSD curriculum -- I'm not familiar with it and don't know anyone who goes there -- but i can say that i like the curriculum here at UChicago. i think it's great that we get exposure to disparities and the social issues that affect the day-to-day practice of medicine. i haven't struggled with balancing different classes -- i actually enjoy having multiple subjects to focus on (for example, in the spring, i often found my medical ethics class to be a nice break from my physiology class.) i definitely think we still learn about all of the organ systems and learn them well -- i know so much more now, at the end of M1, than i did at the beginning! and our step scores are also pretty high every year, so the curriculum must be doing its job :)
That’s amazing to hear! I loved the curriculum when I saw it and I wish more schools can follow. I hope to go there one day and I’m so glad to hear all of this!! Good luck with your journey
I have one question. This is not meant to be mean or disrespectful in any way but why does it at least say that Uchicago medical school acceptance rate is so high. I found the school to be very competitively obviously, but it mentions an 80% acceptance rate. Do they only accept people from certain backgrounds because I know the medical school is very good.
Amazing video! so excited to hear about your experiences there soon!!
