Thanks for not only sharing your awesome grades but also your mental health issues! (I also went through the imposter syndrome for a few months during times of high academic pressure) It’s not talked a lot about in the medical community due to the huge stigma around it, but I love that people like you are brave enough to talk about it. ♥️🙏 Props to you for always being real!!!

I started college this past fall and I've kind of been in the same boat in terms of the struggles with mental health/depression. It's gotten to the point where it's impacting my academics, which makes me question if I should even pursue medicine. The fact that you were not only able to overcome it but also achieve so much afterwards gives me a lot of hope. Thank you!!!

This is truly awesome! You really made the whole application process transparent which is great. May I ask you what extracurricular activities did you do during your freshman year? I'm a freshman and I barely get any free time outside of studies and didn't do anything else other than studying and getting a 4.0 GPA last semester. I am considering being a TA next year, I will be volunteering at a hospital from next month, and am in the process of being a founder of a homeless organization chapter which is already a well-established organization in other states. I just want to know if it's okay to not do any major ECs until the end of freshman year.

you must have some hobbies, try any sports or arts :) something that interests you; you don't have to mention on your AMCAS application everything you do in college, only the things that were the most meaningful to you so in freshman year try everything you can get your hands on (nor drugs) and go wherever your heart takes you, best of luck on your hospital volunteering and homeless organization.

Hypothetically, couldn't an interviewer, having reviewed your application, ask you that considering all that you explain in this video, why didn't you maybe just become a PhD researcher/professor over pursuing medical school? Yes you are passionate about helping people and providing assistance over mutual understanding of hardships, but a professor can do that too.
I am an undergrad and I am not a hot shot by a long shot, but: how would you explain your little clinical experience and little community service experience compared to your research and tutoring work? (This question maybe invalid because I am assuming you had little HOURS for these experiences. But your answer to my question would be useful regardless).
Note: I don't want to piss people off here, but theoretically I am being a super hard ass interviewer in this scenario.

I think it is irresponsible for you to make a fleeting comment about mental health and then go on and discuss yourself as the perfect, textbook medical school applicant. There are many people with depression that have a hard time even getting out of bed, much less getting near perfect grades at a difficult school.

@@vantrinh3623 I did watch the entire video. There are different levels of depression and obviously his is at a much higher functioning level than other people. There are many depressed people that are on the edge of suicide or can barely function. People that actually struggle to just get through the day. His passing comment about depression does a disservice to others that are on a much worst spectrum. I made my comment because I didn't want someone that could barely get out of bed to watch this video and feel worst about themselves because they see someone else that is touting how they have depression but yet still perform basically at the top 1%.

@@dakotaconner1334 I understand your concern for people with lower functioning depression. On the other hand, I don't think he did a disservice to anyone, because his experience could feel just as bad as others'; we never know since we are not him. If someone watches his video and feels bad, it's not his fault - he can't control everyone else's feelings. I think those who do feel bad should instead examine themselves: Why do I feel bad? Do I often compare myself to others? Are those comparisons objective, i.e. is there information about the other person that can affect the comparisons that I'm not aware of? How can I approach others' accomplishments without feeling worse about myself?

@@vantrinh3623 I don't want to argue anymore, it's really pointless. You have your opinion, I have mine. I'm not going to change the way you view my opinion and vice versa. I am free to express my opinion and I stand by what I say in that I think the original poster of the video is irresponsible. I am not sure why you feel such a need to defend him but that is your business. Have a nice day.
