    I am forever in awe and proud of my motherland of Sri Lanka and the gentle smiling faces I remember in growing up in the early fifties and forever recall the bullock carts and monkeys and the wild life and the villages and the fishing canoes returning with their catches at dawn .Ohh what a paradise this island was and hopefully return to it in the future Best Wishes from Australia to my fellow citizens

    I was there as a child, and been back since. Ceylon may well have been a tropical paradise, but does not match that description now. It has enormous problems with population density, pollution, westernization, ethnic conflict, soil erosion. Local tour guides tend to overstate the island's virtues, as tour guides will. There are not massive waterfalls - just nice ones. There are not high mountains - just nice ones. I loved the the footage of the Dutch canals, which thesedays are clogged.

    Even if some parts of the old fashioned style commentary would today be formulated differently, we should consider this documentary as a kind piece of cinematographic art of its particular time, reflecting admiration for the civilization and people of Ceylon. For sure its a kind of joke to hear that just because of his hairstyle the "average singhalese man is difficult to be distinguished from the female". Europeans also had long hair in the 18th century and VOC colonial days..

    Thankyou for a wonderful glimpse at lovely Sri Lanka "Splendid Island" in a more innocent time. Looking at this film from what I have seen of Sri Lankan, it is remarkable how little the ways and lifestyle of has changed.These days motorised transport has shattered the tranquility, I dont recall seeing houses roofed in palm leaves,and the men were certainly not effeminate (that was more likely to be the film directors predilection) Visualy this film is a lovely record of this paradisaical place

According to my knowledge cylon was a civilised nation before the english migration. They had a proper structure in both polilical and relegioes aspects. Bt y do they say natives were civilised after english migration. This is a completely wrong phenomina.!

    Travel film archive that posted the video has said in its website to remember that most of these videos are about 75 years old and reflect the colonial attitudes of the time, which we may object to now. Afterall during Victorian England women and children were supposed to 'belong' to the men as if they were slaves -which too we dont accept now. Lets enjoy everything -the pictures and the understanding of how it was to really live then -despite the unspoilt natural surroundings!!

But there was a period of decline long before the Portuguese came.Slavery was abolished by the British finally and your ancient cast system was counter productive.All humans are the result of a common history in this world. Western Land robbers?? You wish to give your land back to the last Tamil King of Kandy perhaps? Don't blame all on foreigners!

    @england32771 Hello! I also noticed this comment in the movie and thought that its due to the fashion in Europe in the 1930ies. Shorter hair for men. But during ALL times before Europeans had long hair too.(Check the US Dollar bills and see the "effeminate" guys all over according to this logic.Also UK judges and court servants wear long hair, artificial or not. So the reporter isn't very smart to not be able to distinguish a woman from a man other by the hairstyle. But its not a big deal.

      @@reid9584 yes both black white, asian and arabic people all practiced slavery, Are we allowed to judge that or does your moral relativism still apply?. Or are you one of those self hating white people that think slavery is bad only if white people do it? genuinely curious here coming from a Sri Lankan.

    • @keithwatson1384
      @keithwatson1384 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reid Nixon every nation or race is guilty of slavery pal! In fact it was the British that were the first people to ever outlaw and abolish slavery, throughout the world, and they are the reason it was banned everywhere, this was in 1807, no other nation had ever done that before!

    • @keithwatson1384
      @keithwatson1384 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      CaseClosedTV it's great to here that coming from a Sri Lankan. I've have been to that beautiful country and I loved every minute of it! My great great uncle was based there after the war in Trincomalee in the RN. I am frankly tired of the fact the world has simply become a black and white! More so than in the past, where whites aren't allowed to acknowledge their successes or achievements and we are constantly put down for some things our ancestors may have done. Because slavery is the guilt of every race and contrary to popular belief the whites weren't the only people to do it, nor were they the worst but it's only bad if whites do it I suppose! And we are also always told that the Empire was only a bad thing and that we should be ashamed of everything we did(we should be ashamed of some things of course) and that everyone in the ex colonies hates us. What's your opinion on the British and the Empire? Do you recognise the good it did, as well as the bad? Do you think it was beneficial? It would just interesting to hear your opinions!

    • @stealthworx4371
      @stealthworx4371 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@keithwatson1384 Your great uncle was part of the greatest generation and his (along with everyone else who served) services are greatly appreciated.
      In regards to my opinion on the British Empire, I really do find it difficult to quantify its "effects" into black and white categories like good and bad. Keep in mind England weren't the sole colonisers of Sri Lanka with both Portugal and Dutch preceding.
      My opinion admittedly is not very unique in that I believe it was both bad and good. Because of colonisation Sri lanka lost a large portion of its ancient cultural identity with modern Sinhalese (the defacto Sri lankan language) itself turning into a part Sinhalese, English and Spanish hybrid Creole. But in saying that I must also admit because of colonisation we gained a whole host of infrastructure upgrades and advances (for the time period of course) in technology.
      I like to look at history while firmly keeping human nature in mind. It is in our nature to conquer and colonisation is only a byproduct of that basal human desire. I mean if we are being honest this very desire made us put a man on the moon. To forever blame and damn today's white people while ignoring every other race and their dimilar doings is frankly dumb and i honestly believe it does more harm than good to us Sri Lankans (and whoever else would be in a similar situation). Unless you havent noticed already im not a fan of the "perpetual victim mentality" being peddled by todays media snake oil salesmen lol.
      You should visit again soon! the war is over and Sri Lanka has never looked better for tourism!

Remsining will be Sri Lankans under the control of the world chinese... Never borrow never lend. If you can't afford don't have it. But can you? Anyhow, empty half witted claims don't make it to anywhere unless you can point out which statement in where it shows racist comments about sri lankan people, in particular sinhalese people. But, if you're or the other fella who made half witted claim are by any chance black skinned white men, or ones who try hard to be ones, then your comment makes perfect sense to me, 'cos non of you half witted black butted people would want anything to do with your roots or who you really are.
      FYI, sri lankans should pay their gratitude to these american early documentary makers to going to all the trouble to document the history of country nearly hundred years ago, using film. These are rare gems of historical value.

    "don't try" what? You better upload some videos on your poor channel to contribute something positive to humankind instead of your frustration hate speech against another race. People like you I only suffer on the internet.In SriLanka are living friendly people.Most welcoming.You are not of these.Sorry.
