@@merakimerakimeraki im glad you did. I thought you would just cut to you talking about skyrim, but letting the realization that it’s the opening of one of the best games ever seep in was crazy.
I think probably my favourite open world game of all time has to be The Long Dark. It's a Canadian survival-horror game with a story mode taking place in the Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster causes the main character's plane to crash. It's definitely a game about choices, and I have a really big appreciation for the themes of change and survival in it. It came out in 2014, and honestly, wasn't great back then imo. But it's definitely been given a lot of love in recent years. I think with the romanticism of it all, the brutality of nature and of the self, and just of how the game makes you feel. The helplessness of being stuck in a blizzard in the middle of nowhere, slowly freezing to death. Or the sinking feeling of knowing you're about to get mauled to death by wolves. It's a very memorable game experience, and it'll always be close to my heart. If you're into games like Subnautica, The Forest, and even almost Firewatch in terms of story depth anyways, it's definitely worth it.
One of my best experiences with gaming in general comes from Breath Of the Wild. I had finished the somewhat difficult climb to the gerudo map tower and had no idea what was on the other side. It was dusk, and when I got to the top I just looked out at the desert and it looked so big and flat, both on the map and view that I wasn't actually sure what I was looking at. The world looked endless at that point. When I glided down into the desert, I was almost immediately scared and murdered by Naboris. Gerudo remains one of my favorite places in any game.
i always forget how great your videos are cuz how infrequently you upload :( would love to see some more meraki in my life, you have so much potential man!
One of the best experiences i had was while playing rain world(Pretty underrated game and I recommend giving it a try, it might be pretty tough tho) The backgrounds of the game make me really feel that I am traversing ruins of a long dead civilization not to mention the AI in rain world pretty freaking good when the enemies are not focused at killing you they don't just stand there, every entity in rain world has a daily routine and this makes the game feel actually alive like it's an actual dynamic ecosystem. I could just go on about this game but Foekoe did a way better job at reviewing rain world than I could ever do so I recommending watching his video on the game.
Bro ur one of my favourite in depth youtubers out there especially cause you go over these interesting video game topic I been waiting for what feels like forever for you to upload can’t wait to watch your future vids
📌I used to collect every single treasure chest in an open world game even if it only contains a cotton shirt. But one day I stopped playing a game with 100 treasure chests still left on the map. That's when I knew my attitude was changing towards open world games. After that, I didn't finish 3 open world games and quit right in the middle. That has never happened before. I used to finish every single game even if I'm not enjoying it. But now I have no problem moving on to the next title.
Omg finally ur back I’m so happy and also open world games are definitely some of my favorite games especially when you find a good Multiplayer one and play with friends
Open World Games are like a story game, but they don't hold your hand the whole time, which I thinks provides rise to games like Minecraft and Legend of Zelda.
I went to an official Nintendo Switch preview event in San Francisco in February 2017, and I have vivid memories of walking out into the world for the first time in the Breath of the Wild demo. It was truly amazing, unlike anything I'd ever played :)
How the Hell is this content soooooo MASSIVELY underrated?? I just found myself scrolling through channels I subscribed to, and saw that you posted not one, but TWO excellent videos since the last time your channel was in my feed. And the only reason is probably because I didn't have the bell icon checked. Love this content, and I really hope you can do something for some more exposure, because this content is way more than worth a wider audience. Best of luck to you! ✌️
One of my favorite open world games is Elite (1984), mostly because of how ahead of its time it is. There are 2048 star systems to trade, smuggle, mine, bounty hunt, and engage in piracy in. It may not seem like much today, but it's seriously impressive how the developers managed to get something as involved to exist on 8 bit pcs. It may be the first 3d open world, depending on how you define the term.
My favourite title that I played last year was Bug Fables and I would consider it one of the most criminally overlooked games in the past few years. The world is so perfectly crafted that it so easily appeals to the eyes and the soul. Please play it :D

I think one of my favorite things to do in any game is just collecting resources. In BotW for instance, I really enjoyed 100 percenting the game because I would just be walking around doing shit. When you're doing the main quests, you're only focused on getting to the end of them, and can only really appreciate them after. But when you're just chilling and collecting stuff, I always find myself getting this happy floaty feeling that I'm appreciating the world and exploring, but also knowing exactly what I want to do. Something about having a list of resources to collect to make something gives my monkey brain so much dopamine too, lol.
15:38 The nostalgia from that skyrim music, wow. Even though I played Skyrim only a year ago or so by now. I think that nostalgia comes less from Skyrim, and more from the mashup pack of it made for minecraft console edition. I spent so much time in that small world of only a few builds, listening to the music, that when I played Skyrim for the first time, I found myself humming to the overworld music, and saying I know that one so many times. Good memories of old times.

Its just wonderful to explore the ingame world through your own interactions, thats why i love the game industrie even it might be the end soon through lootboxes and bugged game releases.. . I think the desire of letting players have fun exploring the game world brought me into game development, its just a nice feeling and dopamin hit when people actually enjoy your game and you just seeing them smile while they playing, ya.. its nice. Its amazing to see you back here on TH-cam Meraki! ❤
Any chance you might make a video on the innovations introduced by 2000s games generally? As much as people love to pump the '90s as the golden age of games, I've long thought that it was the 2000s when gaming truly hit its stride and led to the momentous rise of casual gamers (probably in largest part thanks to the Wii).
My first gaming experience was my parents commodore 64. I was born in the 80's and consider myself lucky enough to experience it all from the 80's until today. My parents then bought themselves a brand new computer in 1998 and..... Dial up internet was introduced into the household. The new computer brought me into the exciting world of gaming like the Sims and Age of Empires until the Christmas of 1999, my parents fulfilled mine and my brothers dreams by gifting us a Nintendo 64 and i was gone. Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, Pokémon Snap and Zelda Ocarina of Time had me turning into the biggest gaming freak during my early teenage years and my collection of N64 Games kept growing and even now in my late 30's is still growing (I kept the N64 we were given that Christmas and its still working as perfectly today and the day we unwrapped it). My gaming only progressed further when the first xbox was released and Halo was born. I got hooked onto GTA, The Sims again and Forza. Going into my late 20's and 30's my gaming experience started dwindling as parenting and work responsibilities took over my life and never really progressed further into new games after playing Forza Horizons and GTA Vice City. Not sure why i just deluged all of that other than wanting to share my gaming experiences from the 80's until now and obviously reminiscing over time when gaming had me intoxicated. Nostalgia at it's finest i suppose.
The answer is rather simple most of us grew up. The 1000th fetch quest does not feel the same as the 10th. We had our memorable experiences in open worlds already and the new ones do not trigger the same response. At this exact moment some 14 year old is having their formative experience and one day they will too will see the man behind the curtain.
Literally the second I heard the carriage and the horses clacking on the black screen I fuckin knew it was gonna be Skyrim and I still started bawling 😭😭😭
Minecraft and Zelda botw, have been some of my all time favorite open world games. Recently tho, games that are somewhat like open world games like A Short Hike, Animal Crossing NH and Aer have been some of my favorites. While they might not quiet qualify as open world, they have that joy to them that beings back those feelings of first playing mc or botw. Aer I think is the least well known and smallest budget. It's Machias are so fascinating reminding me of Feather, another small indi game. Both being lower quality graphics with an emphasis on a small, yet interesting world(s) explored through flight. Aer also has some really nice macanicts that don't involve fighting at all but instead puzzle solving. It honest was nice considering the type of game, almost refreshing. Because of its lower budget though, the world is emptier then not and not too long of a play time. Still brought me that that joy I had for bigger, a bit older open world game titles. To be honest I can so easily go in depth on each game I love but I think my ramblings about Aer sum them all up fine enough. They being back that feeling of exploring and being able to make my own story in a story that is already made.
I think one game that came after botw that did get this feeling again for me is Outer wilds it doesnt go into the same corners every other open world game goes, you cant even shoot or hurt anyone (exept for urself) in the game, and thats the beauty of the game u get similarly to botw some groundwork and you get to explore the world freely this time even without any quest but the quests you set for yourself. Finding the old ruins and being intrigued by their history did immerse me so much that I played it for 3 days straight. I highly recomment it to everyone.
I'm all for realism and immersion, but at times I had a to-do-list of chores in RDR2 bigger and more intimidating than my chore-list IRL. Crafting bullets and cooking food, having to go to the shops to buy medicine for my horse, do the accounts for the ranch etc.
I’ve thought about a video game you can do. Magic of Mario Kart 8 soundtrack. Even the Mario kart series or Mario video game series would be fun to watch.
