Yes, you won't be disappointed. One of the top 3 places I've explored in NZ.

Good to see a 4wd channel where they actually care about there vehicles also rather than ripping everything to shreds

Yes, I agree with you. I enjoy my vehicle, but if I don't have to hit the bog hole, then I drive around it. It might mean the content is less exciting, but then again, that's not the content I'm trying to make. Do I get stuck? Yes, there is a video coming where I have to winch using my land anchor. But like I said, I'm not going out looking for the gnarliest stuff to see if my vehicle can drive it or to get just get eye balls.

Hey Marcus, you recon one can do this trip at the end of August 2024? How will the snow be during that time? We are a few 4x4's from Auckland who will be touring the South Island.

Yes, you can. The Mackley river might be an issue that time of year, with high water levels. So you might not be able to do the New Creek to Denniston track. The Mount Rochfort area aren't to badly effected by snow, as far as I know. So if you come in from the Westport side most of the tracks should be doable. The Mount Frederick track is sand stone and drivable in rain, etc. That area is fantastic and worth an explore.
Also check out the Manuka Flat & Deep Creek tracks which you'll find just before Lyell campground. Not massively long, but very interesting and fun little side diversions. (Next time, I'd probably wild camp in there, instead of Lyell campground, which is rife with sandflies)

The end of August is pretty cold down here. So I'd suggest 12v electric blankets or diesel heater to keep the tent warm. If you're using a swag, I find it's a bit easier to warm the swag up.
What route are you guys thinking of doing?
Keep in mind many tracks are closed until labour weekend. So I would almost suggest to delay the trip a bit.
But if you guys are coming down for snow, then it's a perfect time.

We need to be in Queenstown from the 30th of August to 1st of September 2024. So week prior and week after will be exploring/ 4x4 / remote camping. I have already built a 3000w inverter into my FJ to run the electric blankets 😁. Diesel heaters are on the list, will appreciate if you have some remote campsites to suggest. We were thinking of touring down the West Cost as my sister stays in Greymouth and back the East.

The idea is also to try and camp in the snow.

On the Denniston plateau, there are numerous little camping spots. You'll see them as you explore the area. Then I can recommend Punakaiki Beach Camp and the area. Quite a few things to do and see around there.
If you are going through Reefton, then do yourself a favour and head up to the Big River track. There is a nice hut up the hill at the end. But I'd rather camp by the river as carrying your stuff up the hill to the hut is a chore.
If you haven't done Napoleon Hill track before, that is absolutely gorgeous with two tunnels you have to go through. Well worth the effort and price of entry.
