Cinemassacre if you throw a grenade at a boss pause it as it's exploding it stays active and continues to hurt the boss till it's dead.
@Cinemassacre This Blaster Master -theme really reminds me of an AVGN-episode that I saw again just recently, because the theme was heavily used in that episode; but I can’t remember, which episode it was 🤔😖🤯.
I know this video is incredibly old! And probably you already know, with blaster master sunsoft was trying to create the ultimate killer app! A game to push the NES to its limits... If you look at the games of that year, blaster master levels were huge! The top-down levels were detailed and beautiful, the bosses were bigger than any other game, and the soundtrack was impressive! For a 1988 game, blaster master was simply the best!
My dad got this game for me at a flea market. I'd never heard of it, and he probably just wanted to give me an NES game 'cause he knew I liked them. This game turned out to be one of my favourite games of all time. He also got me Mega Man X4, which also became one of my all-time faves. My dad has a sixth sense about finding games that I end up loving.
Hey you should get super Mario bros 1 and 3 those are great games
I can't believe it took this long to cover this game. Blaster Master is one of the top 5 NES games. A true relic of my childhood.
You and everyone else 😂😅
loved this game as a kid, but never made it that far into it for whatever reason.
Your face reminds me of a non human action 52 game.
It's nice to see you here Anthony, you know? commenting on James & Mike Mondays :)
Perhaps you are left handed?
0002pA Who is he?
Skooter Boy
just some bro, bruh.
One of the best soundtracks in gaming history!!! This, Journey to silius, Batman, all had awesome music.
All these games were created by Sunsoft
Naoki Kodaka's the man.
This was one of my all time favorites when I was small.
About 7 years ago, I purchased a working Blaster Master on ebay.
For 8 days I played this game about 4 to 5 hours a day, memorizing where to go and what to do and how to beat the bosses.
Finally on the 8th day I was able to beat this game.
When I found out that this game was on Nintendo e-shop I immediately bought it! LOVE THIS GAME!
Love the music in this game. Sunsoft always rocked.
Love tuning in to James & Mike Mondays. They help bring back all of my hardcore gaming fun & excitement back to life. All the classic memories ! Thanks to them. Keep up the awesome work!
This is one game I loved playing as a kid. And that music is just forever stuck in my head and every time I hear that 8-bit melody it brings me back to a simpler time.
the way you guys introduced the game with your narrative just cracks me up!
You guys should play River City Ransom together sometime, that's a great co-op NES game.
That would be so good to watch that is a great suggestion.
One of the best coop games i've ever played!
Why people obsessed do that trash game?
@@ericmcclenahan3885 because... River City Ransom is not trash , duh. Infact, it's one of the best game on the nes.
I absolutely love James and Mike Mondays so much fun, I look forward to it every week.
Yeah that would be sick
Same here. The only thing that would make it better if I could game with them. Well, it might not make it better for anyone else, but I think of all sorts of funny things while they play those games.
Watch pwnageshow. It's a MUCH better version.
This is one of my favorite NES games. I had this game as a kid and would regularly run through it. Once you know the tricks the only really hard part is the last two bosses. Such a great game. Great music, great sfx, great everything. And holy crap, grenades! Grenades is how you kill those things, not the gun.
One of my favorite games on the NES!! Not sure if I ever beat it but I got to the last level. That music was great!! So many memories, thanks James!😊
This was probably one of my top 3 faves growing up. It had excellent music and always presented a challenge no matter how many times i beat it
Loved this game so much. Beat it so many times. Great graphics, controls, and sound. A NES masterpiece for sure.
This was easily one of my favorite games as a kid. It was hard as hell, but a fair challenge unlike other NES games. It took me until adulthood to beat it.
I always ran out of continues by stage 8
as a young person. i never got to play blaster master for the NES (or any NES games other than Mario and Mario 2) but i saw the remake for switch not knowing it was a remake and played the demo. i instantly loved it and i still do. one of my favorite games
That logic fail at 6:56... Priceless.
If he's on the left, kill him from the top. If he's on the right, kill him from the bottom. Reminds me of my ex who one day drove several circles around a gas pump trying to figure out how to get on the right side.
you mean that video that's all over the internet? :P
Yes!!! So happy you guys did this game! This is one of my all-time favorite video games, and definitely one of the best the NES has to offer. Unfortunately, it's very under-appreciated, a lot of people don't even know about it. The game is huge, the gameplay is fun and unique while including 2 different modes, and the music is incredible. I love this game!
It could be because of memory limitations that blocks come back the way they do. Otherwise it would have to keep track of every individual block the game flags as destroyed instead of just "block spawns here".
im so happy he mentioned funco land.. That was my favorite store when i was like 8ish
That place ruled. I used to make pilgrimages on my bike to get there. It took a whole Saturday afternoon. It was always worth it.
+Threeleggedyoyo hell yah, i used to do serious manual labor in my gmas yard from like 9am to noon to get her to take me there (was across state lines and way too far for a bike ride to get there) lol
+Threeleggedyoyo i still remember their newspaper type flyer with the price list of all the games.. man that was an awesome store, gamestop go fuck yourself...
Lol I almost mentioned that in my comment. I'd pick that up every time. I used to watch the prices move a little, hoping some of the good games would come down. Not to mention all the titles on there that I had no idea existed until that point. Good times.
+Threeleggedyoyo hell yes, you are definitely a kindred soul no doubt about it, keep being awesome my friend
I loved the way mike said "Most vagina's don't have teeth like that"
Most? lol, found that very funny and this was a great episode.
You guys make my Mondays special. Thanks.
we always have at least one box of radiation in my backyard
xddd
I am so glad these James and Mike let's plays are a regular thing now
The character when he's out of the tank looks so much like Hello Kitty to me. Maybe it's just me, though :)
LoL... yeah, every time he turns his back to the screen he transforms into Hello Kitty.
HA! To me, it was exactly the other way around: Whenever I saw or heard Hello Kitty, I had to think of this game! :D
Maya Posch LOL!! i never knew that babe.
+Maya Posch It was probably because of the colors. The NES did not have a huge palette to work with.
+Maya Posch it's just you, i can't see any similarities
Awesome video as usual guys. Glad to see you playing one of my favorite games :)
Little tidbit: If you hold down the grenade button in the overhead areas, you'll be able to strafe, as Jason will continue facing the same direction, no matter what direction you move in. This makes boss battles a HELL of a lot easier, because it'll allow you to shoot in one direction while moving. As for a map, there actually was one included in the instruction manual, if you still have it. It's not that detailed, but it does show you how to reach the later areas.
Also, you have unlimited grenades in this game, and unlike the normal bullets, they're fired from your center, and have a wider damage range, which makes them ideal for destroying hard-to-shoot or off-center enemies. There's also a glitch that'll allow you to easily defeat bosses which is triggered by pausing a boss battle while one of your grenades is exploding on the boss's weak point. It'll keep registering damage and when you unpause after a few seconds, the boss will be dead.
Can't wait to see next week's episode. You guys rock :)
This is the music from the Atari 5200 video.
Blaster Master is one of my all time favorites. So glad James is giving it some love.
... Am I the only one that's subscribed to enough content creators that I don't have to bitch about someone not doing something?
I just noticed at 2:47 at the bottom of the screen, you can see the top of the area where you have to use your powered up tank gun to kill the face thing on the wall that opens up to get to level 2. I never noticed that before.
This is one of the greatest and most underrated games not only for the NES, but in the whole of history. Doubly so for the soundtrack. This is one of those games where I have to play it start to finish every few months, and have done for the last 20 years or so.
Also, this was the only World of Power book I ever actually sat down and read. It was a damn good read, too. I wouldn't mind reading it again for old time's sake.
" weekend rental " brings back good memories ! lol
Thanks for playing this game guys! I love how the newest one combines the japanese and american stories.
Blaster Master 2 was indeed on the genesis, and is hard as fuck!
Blaster Master: Enemy Below was on the gameboy
And Blaster Master: Blasting Again was for the PS1. I never played much of the other BM games, the NES game was the onlt one that had worked its way into my heart :)
Wii's Virtual Console (or whatever they called it) also had another new Blaster Master game. I can't recall the full title though.
The ones on Genesis and PS1 sucked balls.
Enemy Below was on GBC actually. There was also "Blaster Master Boy" on Game Boy but it's quite different. The one on the Wii Virtual Console was Blaster master Overdrive.
And now we have Blaster Master Zero, really glad to get into this series.
Blaster Master 2 on the Genesis is indeed hard as fuck. Great game.
This was always one of my favorite games back in the day.
The japanese version actually had a story... Wonderful game with wonderful music. Good times.
Unfortunately, much of the story was in the manual. If I'm not mistaken.
Blaster master zero
Loved playing this game as a kid, i think James would be so cool to hang out with. Drinking beer playing some classic nes games.
Oh hell yeah! Another game I always wanted to own but my mom refused to get it for me claiming "you already have enough games" (all 6 of them). Would either play it at a friends house or rent it from the video store on weekends if it was in stock. I'm proud to say I now own a copy of this game and will probably play it once I finish this video.
yeah that sucks as a kid when you want more games but your parents don't want to buy you more. even though I didn't have too much growing up, my parents actually bought me a decent amount. I think I had around 12-13 games if I recall.
I was pretty lucky. When we got our NES, my relatives went bananas buying me and my older brother games for it. So at the end of the day we had like 30 different games that we put in a big Nintendo bag. We had Mario 1, Mario 3, Duck Hunt, Star Soldier (my favorite as a kid), Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Kung Fu, Bad News Baseball, Rocking Kats (another favorite), Excitebike, Rad Racer, Top Gun, Operation Wolf, Airwolf... just fucking gold.
Had I not had that giant collection of games to play whenever I wanted I might have never grown to love games as much as I do.
back in the sega days i had 9 (that one 6pack game, sonic2, Eternal champions and wheel of fortune) but then once the ps1 came out, all bets where off and i owned game upon game upon game
I was a little late getting my Nes but when I did, my dad hooked it up with the 3 pack of games for 150 bucks which included super mario bros, duck hunt and the powerpad game. he also bought me kung fu and defender 2. I also had rc pro am, bionic commando, bubble bobble, tetris and some others I can't recall. those were the days.
Funny, I always find tanks when I'm chasing after my frog. Blaster Master rules and so do the Worlds Of Power books.
What about the Zero Trilogy?
"Most vaginas don't have fangs like that" -Mike
Uhh... most of em?
Loved this game. Even though I rarely made it very far.
ive found that most of them do
Have you ever seen the movie Teeth? If not, don't.
@@colinh1507 Talk about a traumatizing movie
fu now Im going to have the music stuck in my head again...happens every now and then.
This game was the bomb!
Haha, that's why I loved being a generation or two in consoles out of sync with what was new. Not new enough for a high price tag, but not old enough to be a collectable. I had dozens if not over a hundred NES games as a kid, and I was pretty poor. I never really got many N64 games, because at the time that was a newer system. Around the PS2 era, I ended up getting two PS1s and a boxload of games for it too for really cheap.
haha yup I grew up with PS1 etc. which I was forced to rent just about everything for but every weekend my parents would go to yard sales and people would be selling boxes of nes/snes games for .50 cent to a couple of bucks. Over the years I amassed hundreds of games because my parents would always buy me at least 3-4 every time they found them at yard sales ;p
I am the same way a cheap gamer. I rarely spend full price on a game or system. I own a PS3 because a friend was selling it cheap for 200 bucks. I'll wait for the PS4 to go down to 200 or so before I get it, but mostly I am a PC gamer and buy my games during sales on Steam or Gamefly.
dragnet53 This. I mean, if I really want a specific game, I'm willing to spring for full price, but otherwise I'll just wait and pay attention to sales for stuff I want.
Picked up my ps2 when the ps3 was released, got it for 150,also got over 40 games bundled in.
Did the same when snes started fading in favor of the n64.
"And that's all you need to know" I love that, old games had the best intros. 0-30 seconds of intro, and you're off.
Loved this game. Sunsoft made this and the Batman game you played previously. Always wondered what happened to that company.
Sunsoft was awesome back in the day.
They still exist and make games. Mostly for the Wii.
I've been obsessed with this game the past week. Glad you chose this one. I can't get past the crab in level 5 though.
Mike always goes "omg I haven't played this game from super ancient game from the 80s for soooo long, it's been at least SEVEN YEARS!!!!" The game is almost 30 years old Mike. If you played it 7 years ago, you played it recently. Nobody else in the world played it in 2007. You were the one and only.
YES!!! Thank you so much!! I LOVE THIS GAME! It's funny because 2 days ago I broke it out for a friend because he grew up on Playstation and never played these NES gems. I blew his mind by beating it with no cheats, just used the Max controller, because this game ruined my thumbs for life. I am the master of Master Blaster. It is such a fun and hard game, I still find it hard to beat the final, final boss, the asshole with the whip and shield. And spoiler alert: you do get your frog back in the end. Thanks so much for doing this game, can't wait for part two!!
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST NES GAME EVER MADE. BEST SOUNDTRACK, TOO.
Imagine watching the ENTIRE Cinemassacre playlist back to back.... 2000+ vids gawd damn.
Dudes just google the manual there is a map there and juicy hints.
please do more of these! mike and james are fantastic together!
that looks like quite an impressive NES game o.O
those graphics and animations for NES standards are wow...
One of my favorite games that for some reason I always rented and never bought! But glad to have it now as an adult kid! That background music always gives me that feel good feeling.
I'm curious to see how far you guys get in Blaster Master as it's a really hard game and a really LONG game, taking on average three hours to beat if you know what to do and where to go. :o
Likewise - I owned this as a kid and it took soooo many replays to finally beat it. And that was before knowing about the grenade glitch for the bosses. If you don't max out your gun early and keep it maxed you're f'd. Still one of my faves on the NES.
Yeah I liked more obscure NES games. Like this, The guardian Legend, battle of olympus. I really liked the titles no one really talks about. and this franchise has lasted. It is still going but no one had really made a good 3d version. All of the best titles in the blaster master franchise are all 2d. I'm just getting started on Blaster Master Zero.
nah Don't use the gun at all. Get a turbo controller and autofire grenades. Sure the full power gun clears stuff out well. But its way easier to avoid most enemies than spam bullets. We beat it without a game genie way back when NES was current. Well before the end of it's 8 bit run
Pixelmusement
U call 3hrs a long game lol?
Blaster Master actually uses a lot of Fester's Quest's sound effects.
For those of you with a Wii, you can download this. It's an absolute classic.
Or you could get Overdrive which nobody likes
Man, you guys are whipping through those levels.
I think there is a lot more footage than that which was released.
All you had to do to shoot the enemy that kept switching sides was bait it into switching sides without walking across yourself. Come on! You guys have played enough games to know that trick. ;)
Yes! I was going crazy watching that part :P
actually all he had to do was go below it on the right and shoot, not that hard, he's right handed therefore have him on the right
Except that passing below makes it go to the left. He would still have to do exactly as I said to hit it (bait it into switching sides while returning to the side you started on).
Emmett Turner
except after going to the left he goes back to his original position anyway
13Hyrule Bro, do you even game?! ;) That one started to his left to begin with. It's clear that they only move when you cross their path and they do not return on their own as far as we can tell with the video (haven't played it but it could be a REALLY long timer). The other trick would be to deliberately clip him off the screen to make him respawn in the starting position but that would bring back all the others too in this particular encounter.
My favorite NES game of all time! Love this vid! Definitely the most frustrating game of my childhood
I hope you at least touch on how amazing the soundtrack for this is!
Blaster Master is my alltime favorite NES game! glad to see you guys sitting down and playing this! I can speed run this in like an hour or so woo!
I LOVE THAT GAME!!! :D
Blaster Master is a childhood favorite of mine. So glad you guys played it...even if you did get bored by the 5th level. In my opinion, it's one of the best games on the NES.
Interesting thing about the game's storyline...the whole thing with the boy and his pet frog was only in the American version. In the Japanese version (called "Meta Fight"), the game took place on another planet, and had a typical "hero must defeat evil emperor to save the galaxy" story. I think the storyline with the frog and teenage boy in the American version made it more memorable than the Japanese version....just because how unusual and bizarre it is.
Always love reading parents' comments about these videos not being appropriate for their children. Hey parents: James' videos were NEVER meant for children. That'd be like parents complaining at their local bar that they should stop serving alcohol so their kids can hang out there, too.
This would make a really good modern game. It wouldn't need much for story, just mindless blasting with your tank and rifle. Blasting aliens on alien worlds... That would be fun as hell.
Thumbs up for Funcolandf. I miss that store. It was 100% better than Gamestop.wd
most game stores are better, we have one called R U Game that sells games for just about every system
To me that would be a dream. That store sounds awesome. I own a Sega Dreamcast and it's hard to find things for it. I never get anything from ebay, I prefer supporting local businesses.
***** we got one that is called game trade
***** My favorite game stores in order are: Babbages (Good selection, decent prices), Waldensoftware (Higher prices, rarer items), Play N Trade (Fantastic trade-in prices, Super Cheap prices on 2600, NES, and SNES games including major hits), 3D Games (horrible prices, horrible selection, but sometimes you can find low prices like $5.00 for Red Dead Revolver on Xbox, $30 for SNES, $15 for TMNT IV), Disc Replay (Huge selection, various prices like a NES 2 for $55, Dogbone Controller for $5, Dreamcast for $25, GEN for $20, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for $15, TMNT IV for $10, but the same games have gone up 80% in some cases over the last 2 years), EB Games (not great prices, but some interesting items) and finally GameStop who charge 50% more than Amazon.com and eBay and give you less trade-in credit than any retailer.
that's a really good list! and if you were to trade in about 40 ps3 games to gamestop, chances are you'd only be able to get 5 new ones (if you're lucky) lol
Yay!!! One of my favorite NES games. I actually beat it once in high school. Awesome music! :D
What does Mike do for a living?
Thank you for doing James and Mike Mondays. I look forward to this every week.
When is a new Avgn episode coming out?
A month after watching this and realizing that Fester's Quest is 1/2 of Blaster Master I can honestly say that I still think Blaster Master is top 10 and Fester's Quest could be a really good game with minimal work (relatively speaking) and few changes. Honestly, a good NES ROM hacker/coder/etc could probably turn Fester's Quest into an NES classic, especially considering its essentially a Blaster Master hack.
The bosses are also very Fester Questy. Something I never understood though is alot of people dislike Fester's Quest but then others don't. I thought it was a pretty good game.
i agree i thought fester's quest was a pretty good game for what it is all i can really say is that as people on the internet tend to say nowadays haters are gonna hate
Didn't blaster master come out before festers quest?
Took me 30 years to find this game. Forgot the name of it in adulthood. Glad I found this lost 80’s gem.
blaster master for wii is a remake and blaster master for playstation is the sequal to the original story, the son of the original guy is the character.
Sean Spear Although PS1 version isn't too well received.
What about Blaster Master for GBC?
WebVMan
nes port
I like these play throughs...fun to watch. I like the nerd, but I like the realness of these videos. Keep em coming
06:35 you can throw it a bomb!!
ball bag
I remember playing this game! I loved it! I want to play it again...
6:50 OMG use GRENADES... I guess AVGN is only a nerd about shitty games lol there's a glitch you can exploit on some bosses like the crab one where you throw a grenade, pause the game and if you do it right it will keep taking hits even when paused, then you just unpause and the boss dies.
+coolbluelights You can do that only on like one or two bosses... but yeah... grenades...
All the bosses that it works on are easy though. The final boss is the only boss that is difficult and the grenade trick doesn't work on it.
This game is the bane of my life. I've made it to the end once years ago but couldn't beat it. I've tried to play it several times thru the years since but to noaval. However recently I've restarted it using the invidia sheild with a NES emulator where I can save @ any time. Currently up to the Giant Crab. A life long dream will soon be realized! Great vid.
I think I remember a glitch when fighting the Vagina Boss. While it flashes from receiving damage press pause and it will continue to damage the boss. When you un-pause it is defeated.
Yep, also works on the 2nd V-Boss (I thought they resembled giant mutated ticks myself), as well as the two frog bosses later in the game. Sadly it won't work on the dreaded crab boss in Stage 5 though - we're on our own for that fight :P
Timothy Jackson oh that dang crab clips me every time
Ahhh my childhood. And as every Sunsoft game the music is just amazing.
I fucking love Blaster Master!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like the way you guys interact on camera. It makes for a different and interesting video.
the controls are smooth.... till you get fucking dive and wall walk 1 and 2 and get fucked up in lava or dont jump right cause you cling to the wall
Yeah, that's a major problem with Wall 2. It makes the final area way harder than necessary, 'cause you can't jump from the edge of a ledge.
+SethBlizzard yeah basically jump before the edge and a few parts i just drop down instead of going around those spike rooms
I used to love this game. One of my favorite classics. Can't wait for part two.
lol
Found you!
HAH! FOUND YOU!
Blaster Master was one of my all time favorite NES games! A trick for defeating the bosses. When you hit the enemy and they flash...If you pause while they are flashing, it will continue to do damage to the boss. So you could potentially hit them once, pause, wait a min and unpause. They will be defeated. This doesn't work on emulators, but worked with the original NES.
these games are classics only because at that time they had nothing good to play
MasterStryfe is this a competition ?
cuz you gonna get wrecked
MasterStryfe what are you like 6?
MasterStryfe so u r 6 and a douche
+MasterStryfe you are pathetic just like you r comments. what an asswipe
It doesnt even worth the time to tell you are mindless... go buy a fucking real gaming console, and learn about good games a little bit... people like you put me in bad mood
One of the best games! Grew up loving it!
This game has a top notch soundtrack, my favorite is the underwater world.
My favorite NES Game
You can hold the grenade button and he will strafe rather than turn in his movement. Helps a little for tricky aiming and fighting bosses
Man I love James & Mike videos. Please make more!
Back in the early 90's, in the days of the dialup BBS, "Blaster Master" was THE audio editing program that everyone used. Nowadays, everyone uses "Audacity", but back then, "Blaster Master" was the "Audacity" of it's day. EVERYONE used it for their audio file editing. If you were involved in the tracker scene, making MOD music, that was your main program for getting samples and sound files. It was a great piece of software for it's day. It edited .WAV files and .VOC files and .SND files and a few others from what I remember. Those were new formats back then and the sound quality astounded us. Haha!
Remember getting this game as a gift for Christmas when I was about 9
one of the best games of all time... and that sound track!
God, this game is so good. I remember renting this one a lot. Watching the two of them putter around with that one creature they couldn't shoot with the blaster, I was screaming to myself, THROW A GRENADE, DAMMIT!
It's very difficult to watch this video without constantly thinking to myself, "You're doing it wrong."
Remake is out on Switch and it's fantastic. Nice to take a look at where it came from.
