I'm so angry they did this. Thank you for uploading this. I really hope the composer watches this video and feels the shame he deserves for his disrespectful rearrangements. The spirit of the tracks have been so blatantly ignored. I can't believe a composer exists with the audacity to create such a humiliation.
I haven't seen the game yet and I'm already concerned they miss their mark again.

@@NobleBruv False King Allant, the final Archdemon in the game. His theme song in the original game only had 1 instrument, an organ playing a quiet, slow, deliberate, and dread-inducing melody. It makes you feel like you're out of your depth as you fight a sinister and powerful being. It's one of the most iconic themes in the entire game, and in the remake, despite hyping up the big organ they got to use, they cut out the organ entirely and replaced it with the same generic and overly loud orchestra in every other piece.

@@139-b7j No, it doesn't. Doing that misses the point of the fight. That is actually a good analogy for the problem with the remake's ost. The Gwyn fight is meant to be melancholic and underwhelming in a way. He's the only boss of DS1 that can be parried. You can't parry the Capra Demon but you can parry Gwyn. Humiliating, isn't it?
He was the Lord of Sunlight, god of gods who sacrificed himself to usher in a new era of prosperity, you see the epic side of him in the initial cutscene, his lightning bolts we so intense they became sunlight spears. But when you reach him, he isn't the Lord of Sunlight anymore, he's now merely a Lord of Cinder, as he himself has been burnt down by the First Flame and is now a hollow husk of his former self. He doesn't even use his signature lightining (even though his lightning resistance is through the roof), he's only able to swing his sword covered by the fire he went so far to preserve. Beyond the lies and illusions he and his family set up about an unsetting Sun with undying light, you see reflected in him the truth you see in Lordran in general, and in Anor Londo after you dispel the illusion of Gwynevere, the flame is dying. Keeping it alive, unable to die, has resulted in the curse of the Undead, and has caused the world to stagnate and rot. That is even more evident in DS3 since more time and more cycles have passed.
Gwyn is meant to represent both the gravity of his sacrifice (refueling the flame and revitalizing the world for so long, at the cost of reducing the most powerful being in existence to a mindless zombie protecting the flame) and the state of decay the world is in. The soundtrack therefore has to fit the tone of the fight. It can't be epic or too elaborate. The original "plin plin plon" is a simple piano melody, it's quiet and melancholic, and unique. It fits perfectly the theme of the fight. The final boss doesn't have to be bombastic every time.
Soul of CInder's OST is different, it works there because it was made for a different fight. The 1st phase is going for that traditional climatic final battle with the final boss, trying to hype and intimidate you at the same time as CInder attacks you and cycles through his different builds. As the amalgam of everyone who's linked the fire in the past, including every DS and DS2 character of every player that ever chose that ending, he is able to use all strategies against you, all weapon types, sorceries, pyromancies and miracles, and to combo them as he is essentially the ultimate hybrid build. It's all very overwhelming. Unlike other bosses, he's not the magic guy, or the tank, or the fire spewing monster, he's everything. An orchestral, opressive, epic theme fits here, but then it gradually dies down (as the flame, as the world) to once again remember you of the truth as it slowly introduces the "plin plin plon", the same notes coming back from DS1 as the rest of the score goes silent, as you remember the end of the first game, as the Soul of Cinder remembers the first one who became fuel for the fire, and the remnants of Gwyn's soul emerge after thousands of years to defend the flame one last time. The game brings you back to the beginning so it can finally come to an end. You and Gwyn have that closure; here, at the end of all things, you put down once again the one who was there in the beginning. The Age of Fire starts and ends with Gwyn.
For that tonal shift to work, you have the epic, bombastic score in phase 1 that constrasts with the silence cut only by the melancholic piano notes in phase 2. It works, it is fitting because the track was composed according to the same vision and intent that the whole game was developed with.
So no, you can't just put Soul of CInder's theme in the Gwyn fight. They are both cool, but in different ways.

Latria got gutted in the remake. They made everything too bright, removed the sounds of the mind flair's bells wich were both a waning to their presence and made up half the atmosphere of that level then they replaced their scary squid heads with generic cathulu heads. They also silenced alot of the prisoner's screams and most importantly lord rydell's scream is also worse now wich was also important to the atmosphere. It's just a shame since the prison of hope was my favorite level in demon's souls and they ruined it horribly in the remake.

They did the same thing with the shadow of the colossus remake, in the original the forbidden land was empty and the bloom shade lighting helped to create this harsh effect on the land the only thing close to life were the colossi that inhabited the world, the remake of course shits on all of this by removing the bloom, adding more greenery and ignoring the artistic vision for the game. This isn’t only deviation that they did and I can go on for hours about all the things they got wrong but It would take a whole day all I have left to say is that I’m sick and tired of this modernization fetish that has been popping up recently where people try to remake these games making them as realistic as possible but their “realism” is what they think realism is I’ve grown up in a third world country where your backyard can be literally turned into a jungle if not properly kept and grass doesn’t fucking look like this in the irl nor does the sun and I would be fine with this if it wasn’t for the fact that they do this with every single game. It's interesting that when I mention these same issues to other people I've spoken to irl, they just say to me that I'm either nitpicking, or that the original OST was a product of the limited budget. Now I don't know if that 2nd point would prove to be true or not, but the fact of the matter is, the music as we got it in the original truly does suit the game far better. As you say, these new songs are overly long and far too busy for the simple nature of Demon's Souls fights. Even then they don't really hold a candle to something like Pontiff Sulivan's theme or Ludwig.
An issue I have in that OST Trailer they put out for the game is all of those composers saying "the game is BIG strings, BIG brass, BIG choire" or "Bloodborne has influenced this project". Like... this isn't Bloodborne, this isn't Dark Souls, it's DEMON'S Souls. It has it's own thing going on, and shoehorning in hollow mimics of Bloodborne and Dark Souls musical tendencies is wrong. Demon's Souls is a far subtler game whether they intended it or not with the lack of budget back when they made it, but what we got is amazing and it suits the game. I wouldn't have any of the boss themes any other way, and just listening to the New Maiden Astrea theme play in that interview, as they say they "stayed true to the original" is laughable.
I don't want to put this new OST down too much, but seriously, it all feels so disrespectful to the direction the original had going on. No FromSoft game as really ever recaptured the unique atmosphere of Demon's Souls. I love all of their games, but I cannot deny that Demon's Souls had something special going for it.

Simple, straight to the point and mirrors my exact thoughts about the OST perfectly. Great video. I still can't believe that they tried to make the Dirty Collossus more "epic" with the new track. If anything, it makes the fact that you're fighting a literal piece of shit all the more hilarious and unfitting.
Also, on a side note, I heard a few interesting theories sorrounding the new Maiden Astrea composition that imply that it now tries to express how the fight feels from Garl Vinland's perspective and not the other way around, hence the more heroic and bombastic feel. But the fact that Bluepoint kept raving about how they wanted to stay true to the original in practically every way, including the OST makes me kinda doubt that. Would be weird for them to take that kind of an artistic liberty on that from all places, I think.

I loved every song in the original score and like most tracks from any From Software title i'd listen to them on their own, but I never did that with the Remake's score. I already hated what they did to Astraea's theme before the game came out but listening and comparing the new OST to the old I never realized how bad the new soundtrack was. When each original boss theme started playing I recognized it instantly and when the remake score started I had felt like I never heard it before, like the new, generic soundtrack from the remake just totally faded out when I was actually playing the game. Not a single track in the remake even comes close to the original

    • @thefirelinkconspiracy
      @thefirelinkconspiracy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Since most of the tracks sound similar now, i thought the video could've ended up sounding redundant.
But i'll share some more brief observations i left out of the video since you asked.
-"Dragon God" sounds almost like a parody now, since the fight is still the exact same, you run around breaking pillars while the dragon itself does nothing unless you mess up. They tried really hard to make this track sound pandemonic and god of warish even though Bluepoint left the boss untouched, just as gimmicky.
-Flamelurker is honestly one of the ""better"" reinterpretations but it misses the point like every other track. 20 second build up followed by 3 different arrangements of the original melody... while Flamelurker is desperately trying to reposition himself in order to track the player, only to get staggered by a mail breaker poke to the butt. Most of the new music won't even be heard in-game since Flamelurker (and all of the other bosses besides Old King Allant) have small health bars.
-They really shoved latin (i think it's latin?) in every track they could, too. "Return to Slumber" is the worst example of that i think. The new "lyrics" disrupt the smoothness of the music.
-Old Hero's theme can barely be heard because of the over the top screaming and grunting and panting and etc. But it sounds very generic also.
-I don't know why the new Old King Allant theme got entirely rid of the organ since the musicians now had the privilege to work with an authentic church piece. The track sounds very bland and uninspired now.
I'm not a musician myself, but pretty much all of my close family are.
I'm an artist though, i certainly have more to say about the art direction and the sound design, as i'll do soon enough.
And thanks for the comment! I'm glad you appreciated the video.

The original soundtrack is one of the most special and unique to ever brace gaming. The remake’s is shoddy, overproduced, and lacks all of the subtlety that made Demon’s Souls what it is. Them embracing Bloodborne makes absolutely no sense when Bloodborne is firmly an action game, and Demon’s Souls was much more about immersion. The minimalist palette of the original helped pull you into the world because they were so unconventional, it felt like you were stepping into a world that was entirely out of your reach. The remake just feels like every other game from the last few years.

the original pieces feel like they were composed by someone who really understands games and game composition. Those tracks mirror what the player will naturally be feeling during gameplay. The new tracks seem more like they were done by a film composer. Film audiences are naturally more passive than a player in the middle of a boss fight, therefore film composition generally is more over-the-top in order to SELL a certain feeling, attempting to generate it in the audience. What the original composer understood is that the player will already be feeling things like dread, tension, unease or regret from gameplay alone - their compositions serving simply to reinforce and enhance these already present emotions without any unnecessary elements or bombast.

I don't think FromSoft is innocent of this regression to the mean either though. DS3's OST is "Big Bloodborne" stylistically, and Elden Ring is simply rehash with a few good ambient tracks. tbh, I quite like the new intro for the maiden astraea song, I feel like it was a spot on addition to building up the melancholy of entering this really sad boss arena. but as with everything else, they completely miss the mark afterwards. After I saw that doc of the remake, I got the feeling that bluepoint was desperately trying to show off their expertise in every aspect of the game: "look we can make particle effects" - then everything is about particle effects. "look we can have bigger orchestral pieces" - then every song becomes a 100 man orchestral thing. But, actually, I think that if I were in the same position of bluepoint, I would probably do the same... in the end, they have a team whose creativity is all funneled up to technical stuff, and they're getting projects where most of the grounded creative work is already done, so what is left to the team is to "add" stuff. It is a common thing for artists to want their work to stand out, but I think they miss the mark when they're remaking games that heavily rely on emptiness and space to tell a story, and this ost analysis is spot on to show this.

One other aspect which is somewhat difficult to talk about openly, but nevertheless makes the remake experience worse immersion-wise, is the random insertion of characters from different ethnicities than in the original game. Sure, this is a work of fiction. But nevertheless, its aesthetics are mostly based around european folklore and mythology. Not to mention the fact that is the vision FROM software mostly went with.
Bluepoint swapped ethnicities of a number of characters on purpose, as a non-sensical stupid statement. And they know it and everybody knows it. And sure, that doesn't necessarily ruin the experience. But makes it inferior, less immersive and more "gamey", because non-sensical changes are shoved in your face on purpose. It's like playing a Sekiro Remake and having random Innuits, Finns and Polynesians appear out of nowhere as a "statement". No thanks; I want an experience based around Japanese Folklore, as it was supposed to be 👍

    1. Quality is the foundation of success. I believe that this is absolutely true for our industry. If you want long term sustained success you must have quality to feed it.
    2. Every project we release must be better than our previous release. Hopefully you can see this trend by looking at our past projects.
"The depth at which we remaster projects has grown exponentially. Starting with the God Of War Collection, which involved texture cleanup, to the Uncharted Collection which involved all aspects of the game being modified. In fact for Shadow we don’t call it a remaster, we coin it a remake given the complexity of the project. And moving forward to our next project, we coin it a *_re-envisioning_* given that it goes well beyond what we even thought possible on Shadow."
