I like the colours but I agree with you. Take a look at the new Nike's third kit for Corinthians (the brazilian football club I support), it's pretty similar of how you described, with the same template/pattern of City's third kit but it's purple on top and blue at the bottom of the jersey!
It's a common mistake, in my opinion of course, that clubs make kits that look great from upclose but look terrible when you see them from the camera angle that 90% of the time we see on TV, which is the wide angle that shows most of the pitch. I saw them against Swansea and it was quite ugly. Also the contrast with the green of the grass is not the best.
