    Observations:
    - Jesse Johnson's funk guitar chops are ridiculous.
    - Gerry Hubbard could give Brownmark a run for his money on bass guitar.
    - Seeing this further reinforces how big an influence James Brown and his bands had on a lot of young musicians coming up in the Midwest during that period: Jesse, Morris, and Prince.
    Very informative, thanks for posting this incredible footage.

  • @beatz04
    @beatz04 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The problem with Jesse surely wasn't his guitar chops. But i sense he was more of an introvert that couldn't quite turn that into becoming a true showman on stage like Prince could. Also if you compare him to Prince, the overall sound palette of his records was quite limited whereas Prince created a whole new world with (and within) each new album. Anyway, it is what it is. To this day i think "I'm Just Wanting You" and DaKrash's "Uptown" (which Jesse produced) are the two ballads that empodied the Minneapolis sound the most for me.

    • @Annye888
      @Annye888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Prince was an introvert too, but not on stage, but was extremely private

    • @Afrobelly
      @Afrobelly ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely love "I'm Just Wanting You" and "Uptown". I think those showed some range and a bit of growth for Jesse, but to me they were about as far away from typical Minneapolis synth sound as imaginable. "I Want My Girl" is a ballad that always brings me back to that Minneapolis place real hard though (I feel like RFTW swiped that sound for a lot their material.)

    I find it profound that he took full artistic license on performing those songs by the Time even happily singing the lead vocals on Morris's Spot. I know he co wrote songs such as Jungle Love but it makes it even more bold he would do all this in 1985. Please don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Jesse fan, but just saying, this was quite bold given the era.

    I’m almost 90% sure this is the video I directed at First Avenue. I can’t believe I’m seeing this - it’s such poor quality. As a close friend of Jesse Johnson, I was hired by him to direct the shoot using First Avenue’s in-house camera gear and switching system. Unfortunately, I got caught in the middle of a profit-sharing dispute between Jesse’s manager and the club’s accountant, Jack Myers. This ultimately led to my dismissal from my longtime position as the main VJ at the club.
    Jesse’s manager was demanding more than he was willing to pay, while Jack (who wasn’t exactly a fan of musicians) was looking to contribute as little as possible towards the event’s financing. To add to the chaos, the old Ikegami tube cameras we used hadn’t even been white-balanced until just before I got the go-ahead to start recording-right as the big screen was rising to kick off the show.
    Fortunately, my career took off after that, and I remain good friends with Jesse to this day. In fact, three years later, in 1989, Jesse hired me to direct his live shows at the Yokohama Bayside Club in Japan.
    I truly hope someone comes forward with a cleaner copy of this concert. I doubt there would be any copyright issues, as none of the original parties are involved anymore.

Jesse is a blues, jazz and Hard Rock guitar player and will play on stage with any recording artist that comes through Minneapolis when they were on tour on the spot but Prince won't.. it's not because of pride or money it's because he needs to rehearse his Guitar playing or their songs before he plays with any other musicians , he only could play his songs while a true player or guitarist can play by the feel of the song and hear chords changes & notes called out like Jesse and many others do.

      tun3tym3 Maybe they do. I'd be happy if they did. I know that BET is sitting on some great footage from The Time's 1987 reunion. Who knows if the source material is still around much less in good condition.

      No I don't think so. Prince had more funk background that Jesse. Jesse had that Hendrix and others influence. Both were unbelievable to be around. Both could crank out most any style with ease. Masters of any style of music. Just my opinion... I was there as there tech guy.

      @@xyzzy117 awesome Don. of course you are right. I was thinking about when prince said that Jesse was the only guitarist he feared. can't imagine being able to hang out with prince or jesse let alone be in the same room. I'm a bit of a hardcore fanboy. lol

      @@xyzzy117 with all do respect...Prince had more funk background than Jesse ????? HOW ???...they're only 2 years difference in age. When we think of Funk music, Prince name don't come to mind. Who's comes to mind are the JB's , Bootsy, the Parliament, Sly Stone, Bar-Kays, Gap Band, Cameo, Rick James and many more other artists. And all of those artist are well established before Prince and Jesse started their career, and these are some of the same people that influence Jesse & Prince on their own music. It's just Prince have more songs than Jesse. Jesse grew up in Chicago, So yes his funk background is way more greater than Prince Minnesota background. Blues, Soul and Funk music was barley was heard of in Minneapolis in the 1960's & 70's because Prince's city and state didn't have black radio programs, but of course Chicago had it all and Jesse was exposed to it. Just recently in a Jesse interview he mentioned how he introduce a lot of songs and artist to Prince, and that he played on a lot of Prince records with no credit or recognition on the albums. He did Andre Cymone the same way and other musicians like that. Jesse shared that he played the wah-wah pedal on the 1999 song. But they both plays and created some funky music.

      No, I was there when RFTW join the 85 tour. One of them came up to Jesse and proclaimed on how he influenced them and was there inspiration for RFTW. RFTH was the best warm up act that we had on the tour that year. in 85 Jesse was a big star... I think RFTW was just getting thing rolling.

      LCarre I didn’t say Jesse sounded like he was biting off the Minneapolis Sound...duh...he was there when it was being created and also contributed to its creation. I simply said this sounds like RFTW...a band that sounded like watered down kinda corny Prince.

In the future hold the use of duh, ok? It is rare that I surface and make comment. Peace all! Just to note the Mpls sound started with PRN and round 1982 The time was born 2 cover the R&B side of the market as PRN as moving more mainstream. Who would have known the talent that came into play with Jesse, Jam, Lewis, Morris and more. At the point of 1982 it was PRN. He wrote and played on most Time stuff. They all were amazing and we all were blessed to get this musical gift. RIP PRN with love and respect!
