  • Watch Southern white rhino calf Amali’s exciting journey into the world!
Amali (meaning ‘Hope’) was born in the early hours of 24 September, so she is currently just over one month old.
As ungulates keeper Dan explains, she has been busy exploring her habitat with mum Jamila and big sister Nyah - including lots of zoomies, and rolling around in the herd’s relaxing mud wallow.

To everyone who opposes zoos; Northern White Rhinos were left to their own devices in the wild; now they are functionally extinct with just two females still living. Indonesian Rhinos- same deal, now down to 80 individuals, and those remaining are largely thanks to a last ditch intensive management program. Intensive intervention, including captive populations, is the only way we will save many species. Good luck Amali.

I miss Auckland Zoo. So glad to see it is still beautiful. Greetings from the former Aucklander who is currently working and living in Brisbane Australia.

Loved seeing them running past the camera, and interesting to hear about the other animals reacting to it.

It's beautiful, dedicated hard work. Doing this work for God's endangered species is heartwarming. I for one cannot understand why these beautiful magnetic beasts are slaughtered in the wild for a horn that's holds no scientific proof of aphrodisiac properties. What right have humans got to steal something that belongs to the Rhino.
