Dreamtide Whale is also a very big reason to splash blue for Fight Rigging in Historic. t1 elf, t2 whale, t3 rigging, cast the hideaway spell, proliferate a time founter
That's pretty sweet
Also, it barely has a drawback. It has the same trigger condition as Ledger Shredder, and we all know how frequently that thing connives. So realistically, in any deck that would want it, it's basically a 3 mana 7/5 with upside.
You're definitely undervaluing consign to memory; it has play against all the top decks. It counters most of 4c triggers offensively and defensively, counters all of tron, counter most of rhinos, it's chalice-proof, it scams, counters most important things in titan. I can't imagine a format where its not ubiquitous in blue deck sideboards, even as a splash since the replicate is generic mana. That card is insane.
I think the Whale is a candidate or Best in Show, simply because it pushes blue in a direction it couldn't really go before. But the design space is way too new to actually peg it as BiS. 5 power is chonky and although it lacks evasion, you don't have to deploy this turn 3 either. I considered the Merfolk but honestly making non-lands blue isn't that much of a drawback, because blue is a pretty popular colour - that being said it can absolutely end a game on it's own but imo it's not as devastating as a blood moon for instance. Flare is overrated, sacrificing board presence is a huge cost, there will be decks it's good in but it's not BiS level imo.
If im not mistaken you are also able to take something with a high mv, fail to pay the energy, then you sacrifice what you’ve stolen. Leaving the body is a drawback, but you can blink it with instant and sorcery spells to continue stealing stuff. Idk.
Volatile Stormdrake acts as a weird kill spell that turns their best creature into a 3/2 flyer and gives you 4 energy (if you dont pay to keep their creature, it gets sacrificed). Not sure if the energy decks want or need that effect, but it could interesting
If there ever is a blue devotion deck in a non-rotating format, I think Amphibian Downpour will be an important part of the equation because it's a pseudo removal spell that not just makes a permanent, but every copy ALSO adds its devotion.
As a slight tangent, I love that this set is full of cards that seem tailor-made to fit in decks that don't even exist. Talk about a brewers paradise 😂
% mana teferi was the back bone of Control for a long time, Shadow of the second sun is kind of versión of it on steroids, you untap still on your main phase, so it is basically free, you get another card right away, so if you made it to the 6 turn you basically can start playing game ending stuff and hold interaction, can control hold that long?
Bit tilted about another potential merfolk card being autobanned out of historic. Will be giving it a try in Timeless I guess.
Merfolk is a powerful deck in historic as is tbf
@@DoctorJango Yeah don't totally disagree, more a selfish desire to have new toys than desperate need for a power bump.
If i recall correctly, they gave the blue eldrazi reach because flying is a natural blue ability. Reach is pretty close to flying, so giving the eldrazi reach is like giving it a corrupted version of flying, because its not actually a true blue creature.
Reach = defensive flying

I like the fact that some of these MH3 artworks feel kinda oldschool. Like Deem Inferior or Consign.
Wow, i didn't consider Flare of Denial with Narcomeba and Amalgam, that's kinda nuts.
Also i am sure other people mentioned It, but the reason people are hyped about Ugin's Binding Is that Myr Enforcer and friends trigger It. 0 mana 4/4 Cyclonic Rift Is kinda busted and you can mill It with Emry or discard It with Cookbook.
With so many clues and maps in historic makes kappa very interesting.
Always happy to watch all of these. It's the best way to unwind before hitting up a prerelease.

Shadow of the second sun does work at the beginning of your main phase two though right? It's not like wilderness rec where you have to play instant speed cards, you can play entirely at sorcery speed and still get the double mana.
No, you can't use the mana for sorcery speed things.
The card basically reads "when your second main phase ends, you get an additional untap upkeep + draw" but the timing rules don't support things triggering at the end of a phase. That's why we have the convoluted wording that triggers at the beginning of a phase, and changes what happens after that phase.

Aether Spike really suffers from not being able to give 2.5 energy.
Reach is a downgrade on flying so I guess blue can get it?
Shadow of the Second Sun is kind of like casting a Time Walk every turn minus the extra attack step and planeswalker activations. If you cast it first main it refunds itself immediately in both cards and mana if they can't kill it at instant speed. I don't think it's worth cheating in over enchantments like Omnipotence but it's about as good as a 6 mana enchantment that does not immediately win the game or impact the board can be. At the very least, a killer kitchen table card.

consign to memory is also the first U stifle effect in modern. im sure people will get cute with it for that.
only triggered and not activated abilities though, so it doesn't hit fetchlands
The card is still insane and has play against most decks. It counters cascade, it counters suspend, it counters all of Tron, counters ring, elemental triggers, ring life loss triggers, counters saga search. There's so many things it hits
