Experienced the "phantom" warnings myself during my testing. The obstacle avoidance on the Flip is highly unreliable, leaving me wondering how these issues weren't identified during their own testing.
Hey Matthew, yes, I saw that, and yours was in decent weather too.... Hopefully a firmware update can fix these two issues as it could really mess up a RTH situation....
DJI missed the mist issue! It's an infra red thing - it is a cheap and tacky way of implementing obstacle avoidance to keep the BOM down, but humid air scatters IR light in unpredictable ways. Try using a thermal imaging camera in the fog. I suspect that too much scattered IR light is being reflected back to the sensors, causing the Flip to flop....
This has come out of my Mavic 4 pro fund. What can I say apart from, even the dog knows it's shit. Keeping it real once again Sir I commend you for that alone. Tomorrow I travel down to London once again for the week. Hyde park this week OPH. Am struggling to find a fly Spot of interest 🤔

Try Blackheath Common it gives you a very good view of Canary Wharf, Greenwhich Park and threre are no flying restrictions, I know cause I live there th-cam.com/video/isTZqMd1HDg/w-d-xo.html
I agree very poor and frustrating hopefully they can short the issues out on an update or a lot of flyers are going to be very disappointed with it or just not bother buying it. Thanks for taking the time to inform everyone 👍👍
Had this problem today flying around the cliffs and corries on Cairngorm checking out the snow cover. The Flip was flying normally in sports mode until the auto rth came on and it just stopped over the edge of the crags and wouldn’t move forward to land but I could still move it back and sideways. I then cancelled the rth and put it in sports mode to cancel the obstacle avoidance and managed to get the drone back before the battery depleted! The weather as completely calm and sunny but with the odd bit mist drifting in and this seemed to affect the sensor causing phantom obstacles which would make the drone either stop or move slowly forward with bucking bronco start stop movements. I tried a few more flights in sports mode but as soon as I used normal and cinematic the problem reoccurred and I could only move backwards or sideways but not forward. It’s a big issue!

I guess the processor doesnt have the power to calc avoiding routes. Avoidance means to avoid an obstacle, not detecting. The sensor is still on giving hint to the pilot. With mist it's very tricky. These ghost obstacles happen with mini3p and mini4p as well when going downwards in mist. But on the mini4p you can switch them off, which is very important. Otherwise you have to ground your drone by an empty battery. 😉
IR sensors seemed to go out of fashion soon after the DJI Spark, probably for these issues… And DJI also call it Obstacle Detection which I’m sure is why you only get brake rather than bypass and why it turns off during active track because it won’t find it’s way around an obstacle, and will just stop… It’s obvious that it can tell where the obstacle is by looking at the red radar so maybe it’ll be added in a firmware update…
It is. People reacting like if fog would not affect sensors. Its logic that if you want to take it in a fuggy which you should not, just disable the sensor.
Nice work, but I don’t think obstacle avoidance is important to Flip. It only has forward and downward looking sensors, which indicates that obstacle avoidance should not be taken seriously. I have 360° obstacle avoidance on my Air 3S, but never rely on it. Going back to the days of flying my Inspire 1, we learned to fly the drone. Look forward to receiving my Flip on Tuesday, and obstacle avoidance will not be important to me.
The main people that will buy this drone are not experienced pilots so every bit of help will be needed. The Neo can take serious knocks, the Flip has not been out long enough to know how well it will take the same impacts into hard objects and solid ground.
I have indeed! I just struggle to see how DJI can go from that to this in such a short space of time. As you say - hopefully some firmware updates smooth things out, but seems like a bit of a damp squib to me so far…
Well done, ian honest and like you say, people are paying a lot of money for this. I think dji should recall this product. I really think they rushed this one. I dont know why because their drones are usually second to none. Don't make sense. 😁👌👍 🇬🇧
I use laser range finders in another role. When it gets a little misty they pack up and don’t work. I suspect this is what is affecting the Flip, I wonder if the Air3S is also afflicted by the same issue?
Wow.. That's bloody weird and surprising from DJI. Have they lowered their game? Did they rush this drone out so to get it to market quick time in the US?

Drag the screen down and tap 'record screen' I haven't flown in strong wind but have seen reviews of it unable to stay stationary.... Make sure you're able to land remotely if it starts blowing away....
Hi Ian, sure by now you saw Gavin’s video…😂 my guess is that in DJI’s rush to compete with the X1 to maintain their dominance in the camera drone market space, they decided to skip quality assurance completely on the flip. Almost makes you think that we are there QA department except we don’t get paid for it. They do! To make matters worse, when they release a new firmware update, the fix list will say nothing at all. This is another reason why my decision still remains. I’m not buying it.😊 Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I watched Gavin's video last night after he commented on this video. His experience was pretty amazing to find the auto rth actually fail due to this and leave the drone just hovering.
I have decided to buy the FLIP after reading the great reviews. Its uses are mounting up. In the highlands of Scotland it makes for a great midge repellant. Hold the battery and do NOT Unfold. Connect the phone to the drone and push that slider to the right- Max setting. Tie to tent with rear facing out, Voila a midge mincer.

Have you tried flying it indoors? I turned object avoidance off but when it switches to Atti mode it really jumps and pretty much goes out of control like the Neo did. I hope they can do something about that but it may just be the size of the props that move it around more than the Neo.

I took my Mini 4 Pro out into the woods yesterday and was getting some awesome obstacle avoidance fly past shots of the tree trunks flew forwards around 40 odd meters and turned around and flew back in awe of the little drones ability to dodge the trees got it back to me only to realise that it was actually in sport mode where obstacle avoidance is supposed to be turned off but it clearly wasn't as I flying it pretty much directly at trees and it was happily dodging them, ok I was being very light of the sticks so it was moving pretty slowly but still I was shocked when I realised I was in sport mode lol Seems DJI lies about the obstacle avoidance being off I'd say it's just less effective. Might be worth testing it on the Mini 4 Pro as well?
If the switch is already in sport mode (ie you left it there from previous flight) when you turn on the drone, it will actually start up and stay in Normal Mode. It only changes to Sport Mode if you move the switch in flight. So I'd say you were actually flying in Normal Mode and hence the OA was on and active....
According to Gavin HR (same country, same weather, same problem), DJI told him that it's caused by moisture on the infrared OA sensor. Is this mentioned in the user manual?

Phantom 3 standars runs on the DJI Go app (not the Fly App and Not the Go 4 app). You can (only) download the app for free from here; download and try and run it on your phone and see before you commit to buying the drone: www.dji.com/downloads/djiapp/dji-go-3
Hopefully DJI can sort this out with a firmware update, though the FLIP uses infrared sensor which apparently does not like anything other than very clear day, well that's what i read somewhere.
The obstical avoidance IS the main point for autonomous flight. It's completely robotic and it needs a pair of eyes. Switching them off is like having asked Timmy or Sara to go back home with their eyes closed!
Dji FLOP more like. Thanks for the additional insight, and yet even if Dji will bring out a firmware fix to that obtstacle sensing fiasco, I still don't see the "Flop" as a contender or improvement over the Mini 4 Pro.
I believe humid conditions scatter IR signals a lot and it’s clearly not happy. So high humidity and fog are a no go a drone with just this type of sensor. Not sure if a firmware update will sort it. Not a fan of this drone TBH, not really sure what market it’s aiming at with the Neo and then on to the Mini 4 Pro. I certainly would be considering purchasing it, horrible styling, seems very noisy and as of this video not operating well when compared to their other drones.
I am first this time? Btw, this fog nonsense is hillarious, it would not even come back during RTH in fog as I saw in another video… Hope they fix it by reducing the sensitivity of the sensor or using different algorithms for obstacle detection 😅
My Air3 doesn’t like foggy conditions with similar conditions to you have there is shows fake objects in its way. Must have something to do with poor light.

Well, my expectations concerning IR were met. At least right now that seems to be the case. IF the technology used is Time of Flight my experiences were that it detects the first = nearest "object" or if there a multiple objects in different distances it does not put out any value at all. Maybe the mist is the first object. Would be bad if this was the case. Why bring such experiments to the market? Why not the proven stereo cameras? Cannot comprehend. 😐 I love DJI products and have a lot of it. This it's Why it hurts even more seeing this. Let's see what can be fixed by updates...
Yep; I remember your comment yesterday and read up on Time of Flight. Thought it was generally laser rather than IR. Either way, I don't actually think we'll be seeing this OA system on any future drone from DJI...
This drone is right on 249.5gms, I guess that sensor is the lightest one they could fit? I just don't understand why they did not design it with the same sensors as the mini pro series. It's almost the same size! I am guessing there are many different designers in the same company that fail to talk to different departments as its a mystery how they messed up the design of this drone! It's much more noisy than both the mini pro series and 10db louder than even the Neo, though not as high pitched. Poor battery efficiency compared to the mini pro drones! The m3p has a 2590mah and flies around 28 real minutes while the Flip with its 3110mah gets around 24 minutes!
Only teething problems that`s why i always wait until the impatient ones have found all the flaws first. Don`t panic Dji will have it sorted within the month.
This drone is a disappointment. I was excited about getting mine since the rumors started so I pulled the trigger immediately… all I really wanted was essentially something like the Neo but with a good camera this time. Now I own 2 drones that I’m less than thrilled about. DJI has shot themselves in the foot twice in a row in my view, and honestly I don’t think I will pursue any more drone purchases moving forward.
Yeah…. I already have the mini 3 pro and mini 4 pro but I want to ditch the controller when going on walks with my wife; for me that was the entire point of these. Really disappointed that we’re not “there” yet. 😖
I had the same issue while running, if i used the controller or smartphone it would judder like crazy. It even went straight up one time and had a hard time even to come down. One time the camera even when up and down. I had many dji drones but this one is not good. I will go for a refund, because this drone is the worst i got from dji and that is really a shame because i love all my other dji drones
I cancelled my order based on your video (and a few others)... If I see less complaining, maybe I'll reorder in the future... It's way too much money (and why don't they provide drone-only?) for it to be flakey...
This makes it clear this is not a drone that is of interest to me. Cannot track other than humans Wind performance Unreliable tracking in weather branches etc. What was DJI thinking ? It’s bigger than the far more capable mini 4 the props look like a great deal of trouble to change and may well injure your finger if your finger gets inside the prop guard.
One thing that I audibly picked up on that worries me, is at 5:00 as you made that brief quick descent, it sounded like you were about to enter vortex ring state. I'd be worried about that.
Very disappointing generally. I wasn’t really interested in buying this drone but I still like to watch review videos just to see the latest innovations but all I’m seeing is a drone that doesn’t work at all well in any department. I suppose it must take good videos and stills as the camera is at least tried and tested but that’s going to be about it! Good news is at least I’m not tormenting myself trying to find an excuse to buy 😂
This is a truly odd drone. Half baked and feels like a v0.5 where development has not been completed but someone working to schedule forced its release. DJI, don’t start getting paying customers to test your pre release products
Ian has no idea that this drone is smarter than he is. This drone cannot see through the soup he is attempting to fly it in and stops for that reason. This drone is using its sensor correctly to protect itself and refuses input from the poor pilot. Sorry Ian but you need to get you head out of your.....
That is what i think too. Look it up everywhere you can find info that dji says that you should not fly on rain, on a foggy day or dark environments. Drone is not acting up. Other users having no issues with non sensor drones does not mean they were right at the fact that the were used to flying in bad conditions. Now they want to blame dji. Just disáble the sensors and use it as a normal drone as you always have. Use sensors only on clear days and thats it. Its an electronic product not a miracle maker
5:40 The conditions are clear, so your idea of a soup is different to mine..... my 10 other drones fly in genuinely worse conditions and that's about it.....

@@IaninLondon Ian at 6:44 is that clear to you? That is soup. Airplanes need special expensive instruments to fly in that. Why would you test a drone in that and expect MAV 3 performance? IR sensors see it differently or you could have a drone that is having a problem. No one else has this problem. This is the same whiny shit some were saying when the Mav 3 came out and only needed an update. At least they got that drone out and it was incredible. They will all need updates at some point to make them better. Has DJI failed us yet?
Yep, but I have flown the Mini 4 Pro in way mistier weather, and the point is that even with no mist, like at 5:40, it's performing poorly. That's my issue. All previous models of DJI have not had this issue. I fly and repprt my findings. That's it.

This is the precise scenario GavinHR experienced. And you did the only thing possible to solve it; cancel the RTH and put into Sport Mode. 👍🏻

This is the first drone I own and first time trying it out it gives me a „red bar“ all the time and won’t fly forward.
That is messed up!!!!

Thank you for your findings, which confirms my opinion not to get the Flip. I'll wait for the Mini 5 in the summer or the Neo 2 in the Autumn....

It's not fog... 5:40. No fog. Won't fly. No other DJI drone with OA behaves this way.

I was going to buy this but every review I have seen has put me off. If it goes into rth the obstacle avoidance turns back on so no good at all.

Interesting. But for Air 3S, no, as I flew the Air 3S through misty cloud inversion up at the Lakes in October with zero issues....

That’s a pretty hazardous bug if it is a firmware issue. Hopefully DJI is on it.

It's powerful but not that powerful buddy....... I have a no-visit rule between May & September these days.... :(

When I did the NC500 2 years ago, we learned hard and fast they strike anywhere any time... Inland, coast or island. (except when it's windy). :)

Have you tried flying it indoors? I turned object avoidance off but when it switches to Atti mode it really jumps and pretty much goes out of control like the Neo did. I hope they can do something about that but it may just be the size of the props that move it around more than the Neo.
I did try flhyign it in my studio; it stayed still and didn't drift much at all, so I figured there was some downward positioning going on....

I took my Mini 4 Pro out into the woods yesterday and was getting some awesome obstacle avoidance fly past shots of the tree trunks flew forwards around 40 odd meters and turned around and flew back in awe of the little drones ability to dodge the trees got it back to me only to realise that it was actually in sport mode where obstacle avoidance is supposed to be turned off but it clearly wasn't as I flying it pretty much directly at trees and it was happily dodging them, ok I was being very light of the sticks so it was moving pretty slowly but still I was shocked when I realised I was in sport mode lol Seems DJI lies about the obstacle avoidance being off I'd say it's just less effective. Might be worth testing it on the Mini 4 Pro as well?
If the switch is already in sport mode (ie you left it there from previous flight) when you turn on the drone, it will actually start up and stay in Normal Mode. It only changes to Sport Mode if you move the switch in flight. So I'd say you were actually flying in Normal Mode and hence the OA was on and active....

According to Gavin HR (same country, same weather, same problem), DJI told him that it's caused by moisture on the infrared OA sensor. Is this mentioned in the user manual?
So: Don't fly over water or near water vapor. Wasser ist verboten ja?

Phantom 3 standars runs on the DJI Go app (not the Fly App and Not the Go 4 app). You can (only) download the app for free from here; download and try and run it on your phone and see before you commit to buying the drone: www.dji.com/downloads/djiapp/dji-go-3
Hopefully DJI can sort this out with a firmware update, though the FLIP uses infrared sensor which apparently does not like anything other than very clear day, well that's what i read somewhere.
The obstical avoidance IS the main point for autonomous flight. It's completely robotic and it needs a pair of eyes. Switching them off is like having asked Timmy or Sara to go back home with their eyes closed!

I guess they don't have fog in China where they test to drone to know the infra-red sensor will have this problem?
The Neo has no obstacle avoidance but it stops if you go behind something too.
Rubbish it just loses track it's not stopping because it's going to hit something it just lost visual on its target

I believe humid conditions scatter IR signals a lot and it’s clearly not happy. So high humidity and fog are a no go a drone with just this type of sensor. Not sure if a firmware update will sort it.
Not a fan of this drone TBH, not really sure what market it’s aiming at with the Neo and then on to the Mini 4 Pro.
I certainly would be considering purchasing it, horrible styling, seems very noisy and as of this video not operating well when compared to their other drones.

My Air3 doesn’t like foggy conditions with similar conditions to you have there is shows fake objects in its way. Must have something to do with poor light.
Strange... I have never had that issue with my Air 3 or Air 3S and flown in low cloud up mountains without issue...
its the fog/mist...nothing else....same with my air 3....when weather changes it works normally.

Well, my expectations concerning IR were met. At least right now that seems to be the case. IF the technology used is Time of Flight my experiences were that it detects the first = nearest "object" or if there a multiple objects in different distances it does not put out any value at all. Maybe the mist is the first object. Would be bad if this was the case. Why bring such experiments to the market? Why not the proven stereo cameras? Cannot comprehend. 😐
I love DJI products and have a lot of it. This it's Why it hurts even more seeing this. Let's see what can be fixed by updates...
Yep; I remember your comment yesterday and read up on Time of Flight. Thought it was generally laser rather than IR. Either way, I don't actually think we'll be seeing this OA system on any future drone from DJI...
This drone is right on 249.5gms, I guess that sensor is the lightest one they could fit? I just don't understand why they did not design it with the same sensors as the mini pro series. It's almost the same size! I am guessing there are many different designers in the same company that fail to talk to different departments as its a mystery how they messed up the design of this drone! It's much more noisy than both the mini pro series and 10db louder than even the Neo, though not as high pitched. Poor battery efficiency compared to the mini pro drones! The m3p has a 2590mah and flies around 28 real minutes while the Flip with its 3110mah gets around 24 minutes!

It's LIDAR Not a camera type of detection it can't penetrate fog it bounces back to the source. Light detection and ranging ( LIDAR }
This isn't lidar, as found on the air 3S, this is 3D infrared on the flip and the different wavelengths obviously not happy with fine mist.
This drone is a disappointment. I was excited about getting mine since the rumors started so I pulled the trigger immediately… all I really wanted was essentially something like the Neo but with a good camera this time. Now I own 2 drones that I’m less than thrilled about. DJI has shot themselves in the foot twice in a row in my view, and honestly I don’t think I will pursue any more drone purchases moving forward.
Keep an eye out for a second hand Mini 3 Pro and you will be a very happy person.....

I had the same issue while running, if i used the controller or smartphone it would judder like crazy. It even went straight up one time and had a hard time even to come down. One time the camera even when up and down. I had many dji drones but this one is not good. I will go for a refund, because this drone is the worst i got from dji and that is really a shame because i love all my other dji drones

What was DJI thinking ? It’s bigger than the far more capable mini 4 the props look like a great deal of trouble to change and may well injure your finger if your finger gets inside the prop guard.

One thing that I audibly picked up on that worries me, is at 5:00 as you made that brief quick descent, it sounded like you were about to enter vortex ring state.

Very disappointing generally. I wasn’t really interested in buying this drone but I still like to watch review videos just to see the latest innovations but all I’m seeing is a drone that doesn’t work at all well in any department. I suppose it must take good videos and stills as the camera is at least tried and tested but that’s going to be about it! Good news is at least I’m not tormenting myself trying to find an excuse to buy 😂

Ian has no idea that this drone is smarter than he is. This drone cannot see through the soup he is attempting to fly it in and stops for that reason. This drone is using its sensor correctly to protect itself and refuses input from the poor pilot. Sorry Ian but you need to get you head out of your.....
That is what i think too. Look it up everywhere you can find info that dji says that you should not fly on rain, on a foggy day or dark environments. Drone is not acting up. Other users having no issues with non sensor drones does not mean they were right at the fact that the were used to flying in bad conditions. Now they want to blame dji. Just disáble the sensors and use it as a normal drone as you always have. Use sensors only on clear days and thats it. Its an electronic product not a miracle maker
5:40 The conditions are clear, so your idea of a soup is different to mine..... my 10 other drones fly in genuinely worse conditions and that's about it.....

@@IaninLondon Ian at 6:44 is that clear to you? That is soup. Airplanes need special expensive instruments to fly in that. Why would you test a drone in that and expect MAV 3 performance? IR sensors see it differently or you could have a drone that is having a problem. No one else has this problem. This is the same whiny shit some were saying when the Mav 3 came out and only needed an update. At least they got that drone out and it was incredible. They will all need updates at some point to make them better. Has DJI failed us yet?
Yep, but I have flown the Mini 4 Pro in way mistier weather, and the point is that even with no mist, like at 5:40, it's performing poorly. That's my issue. All previous models of DJI have not had this issue. I fly and repprt my findings. That's it.
