Thank you sir. This is why your the best drone reviewer on YT. The truth will always set you free-no sugar coating. I've decided against the flip when I learned it DOES NOT support any of DJI's goggles.....and now this.
Thank you kindly I appreciate the kind words, overall I think it performs well but the lack of goggle support, and the fact they don’t sell it as a drone only will really hamper sales. Thanks for taking the time to comment as always
A great reason never to buy any tech till it's reviewed properly, and not by some influencer blowing smoke up the manufacturers arse. I also saw a FB post where DJI said it cannot circle an object that is not the user, unlike all the other DJI drones. Looks like the IR sensor is like high beam lights on a car in fog, the fog bounces the light off it
This is a v1.0 drone in almost every sense. Not having visual obstacle avoidance and the default behaviour being a hard stop, lack of propulsion power and being blown like a leaf in the wind, the curiously large size and gimmicky folding design…. Everything suggests significant further developments are needed for this mid range drone before people purchase this. As it stands this isn’t a sensible purchase, but let’s hope DJI get it right in the future
Hi my friend, so far it’s been ok in the wind for me, I think the issue is we have been spoilt with the mini 4 pro being so good, this is rated at 4ms less than the mini 4 pro so yes I expect it won’t be as good in the wind overall however as I mentioned so far it’s not struggled personally. Thanks for the comment as always !
Hello I,m a newby to Drones and I have had exactly the same problems. The fog was bearly noticeable and even in the follow me mode at about 2 meters high it kept stopping and there was no fog as I could see at all just a damp miserable day I have now returned my Flip before I lost it I did manage when it was at some hight to nurse it back more by luck than skill great video cheers Dave
Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your experience and confirms my findings, if you have the extra cash I would suggest the mini 4 pro I’ve never had a single issue with that drone
Another greatly appreciated video with impressive examples of an issue which , until you discovered it, who knew about this? Thank you for making us aware and all the best from the US!
I think the flip will be affected when flying in mist from waves, waterfalls, smoke and more. Any aerial particulates will likely be seen as an obstacle. I liked the mini 2 because it didn’t care, no obstacle avoidance, and could fly in very foggy conditions without issues.
"Serious flaw" I've had DJI drones with 360 deg obstacle avoidance do the same thing. You have to be savvy enough to go to Sport mode when that happens. Quite the clicky, clicky drama queen content. Without a controller in those conditions, you are assuming a much higher risk.
Thank you so very much GavinHR. This will be very helpful and important when flying in foggy conditions. It could cause people to lose there drone or crash. Have a great weekend
The fog set off obstacle avoidance; that's crazy. I was under the impression that IR would see through fog and mist, but apparently LiDAR is in order for that.
I have had the same problem with the mini 4 Pro but the sensors do not work in low Light so I would say it's an upgrade but it's not perfect the same as the mini 4 Pro affected by fog and detecting opticals when they are not there.
*_Thank you very much for this notice. I am one of those who loves to fly above and through the clouds. More than enough reason not to buy this drone. Congratulations for your work, you always warn us about dji problems so we can avoid them or be on alert for possible unforeseen failures. Greetings from the Canary Islands partner._*
Very detailed vlog there Gavin. I found the same issue light fog and the flip refused to return to home. The drone just hovered in the same position. So I put into spurts mode and flew back on the sticks. Having said that I had fly about yesterday and enjoyed the be flight. The flip will compliment the DJI Mini 4 pro and osmo pocket three for my hobby content. Keep the videos coming this is sound advice especially if fog rolls in very quickly. 😊
Wow! Thank you for also confirming this even though I’m sorry to hear it happened, it seems there’s certainly an issue with the type of sensor used for this flip
@GAVINHR sorry I missed that. Good video, thanks for the heads up. In general, I'd never fly the neo or the flip with my mobile to an unretrievable position, I think it's a good rule of thumb. As you said, it's a worry in the case of a disconnect when using the controller. So is obstacle avoidance always on for a RTH? Even if you have it off?
Also you can fly up a little and then fly sideways or backwards where the drone doesnt have the sensors (but make sure there are no obstacles in the way)
Hey I’m having the same issue with my air 3s. Today I was flying and it was clear and sunny. Every time I faced the sun the obstacle avoidance activated and would not let me move
I can say that this happened to me today when flying my Flip. Also during foggy weather... Drone could not move forward in the fog. With RTH enabled the drone ascended and flew away from me. Had to manually control it to get it back.
With the greatest of respects I’m sorry to hear that happened however also kinda pleased it confirms my findings. Thank you for taking the time to comment and feedback it back
It seems that this drone was in demand at the first launch because of the dji brand. Listening to some reviewers' opinions about the dji flip, it seems far from expectations. A big challenge for dji flip to capture the market.
I had a similar situation over a cliff in Cyprus but with my mini 2. The Notification I had was. Controller disconnected altho im looking at the drone and it's in line of sight , just over the cliff edge but hovering actually over the sea water Then The Drone was telling me it is doing Forced landing in 99second , and I couldn't do anything no control whatsoever but did cancel until 12 seconds left , luckily I managed to cancel it and then got 3 sets of countdowns of 99seconds , the 4th was forced landing was telling me in 60seconds , im thinking it'd foh ting down every-time im done for , So at this point with still no control over the drone and battery at 20% but I can still see it , but I'm unable to get it , I'm accepting the fact it's going to land in the sea over the cliff edge sith my stomach churning , I turned controller off and back in quick hoping to reconnect and it did yessss to my relief and last strike of luck last notification was drone landing in 12 seconds @12% batterly left. I pushed lever forward and on its way down just managed to get very slight forward motion By the skin of my teeth it landed at the cliff edge , and idid manage to retrieve it, that I think like you was caused by slight sea mist , now im terrified to fly over water , now you know me and my videos that's all I like to do. , Very scary In fact iv not flown much since S
I'm just curious about the naming convention here, "infrared sensor" vs "lidar" e g laser based. From internet: "Lidar (/ˈlaɪdɑːr/, also LIDAR, LiDAR or LADAR, an acronym of "light detection and ranging"[1] or "laser imaging, detection, and ranging"[2]) is a method for determining ranges by targeting an object or a surface with a laser and measuring the time for the reflected light to return to the receiver. Lidar may operate in a fixed direction (e.g., vertical) or it may scan multiple directions, in which case it is known as lidar scanning or 3D laser scanning, a special combination of 3-D scanning and laser scanning."
hi there few days ago i was flying along the coast sea mist blew in so fast it gave me trouble landing my mini4 pro the mist confused it and i dont like the flip fancied a neo but my mobile aint on djis list and aint buying a new one so ill stick with the 4 happy flying
Well i heard googles support is going to come in an update per a person who has good source. This about the fog is great call, i will disable obstacle avoidance if ever want to take it on a foggy day. But drone is not failing as they advise to not fly in any type of minimum fog. In other drones you can do it because it did not even have any obstacle avoidance. Another use said this same thing happens on a pro. Im waiting for your review of our dji flip. Mini 4k is too outdatef, Mini 3 too, then neo is a toy, avata does not have the good quality camera of thos one. Then flip is right in my buget. I cant get air 3s nor the pro
This is certainly not a bashing of the flip, as I mentioned to you in another comment I really like it and I think it’s a viable replacement for the mini 3 personally. I’ll edit the video tomorrow the full review
@GAVINHR great thanks a lot. Hope you have a nice evening. I have reserved mine and will pick it up tomarrow. Hope i dont regret it lmao. I practiced so much with aftermarket propeller guards but it limited my altitude and distance. Knowing dji brought us for the first time an stabilized drone with guards included is amazing. I will no longer be limited. One day a controller got damaged and my mini 2 se crashed and broke a propeller.. after that day i began to use aftermarket guards but i could only fly indoors and even if i crashed it in the house, then propellers would never brake with guards on.

Wow! Thank you for also confirming this even though I’m sorry to hear it happened, it seems there’s certainly an issue with the type of sensor used for this flip
What about just turning off obstacle avoidance? Can you always reverse even with obstacle avoidance on?
I did cover that in the video, it’s one solution unless you have a lost signal RTH then it’s a major issue
@GAVINHR sorry I missed that. Good video, thanks for the heads up. In general, I'd never fly the neo or the flip with my mobile to an unretrievable position, I think it's a good rule of thumb. Under normal circumstances yes it’s a no go anyway but this seemed particularly sensitive even when it wasn’t particularly foggy
Hey I’m having the same issue with my air 3s. Today I was flying and it was clear and sunny. Every time I faced the sun the obstacle avoidance activated and would not let me move
I wonder if you smudge fingerprints or wet the front of that sensor a little it will do the same thing?
Bingo, from what I have read if that screen picks up moisture that can also cause it
one mans light mist is another mans heavy fog
and it would not fly backwards??
I can say that this happened to me today when flying my Flip. Also during foggy weather... Drone could not move forward in the fog. With RTH enabled the drone ascended and flew away from me. Had to manually control it to get it back.
