This whole episode shows that Tim Bradford is literally the best T.O. Completely different training methods between Lucy and the new rookie and completely perfect for both people.
Agree, loved this kind of character development. Would have liked to still see this female character on the show rather than that superstitious Celina gnome that has been around for a whole season already.
It was the same with West and Thorsen when he temporarily rode with them while their TOs weren't available. He may not be the one with the psychology degree or know all the psychobabble but his superpower is the ability to read people and go with what they need.

@JC - 11MV 658560 The Woodlands SS nah, Tim just knows that each person needs to be trained a different way, Lucy was raised that problems could always be solved by talking it out which is not the case whereas Barnes spent years having to pay close attention to everyone within her view. Each rookie had to be trained a different way and he truly understands her situation since he was former military as well
I believe it’s still the same version lol, he just trained her in a different way since this person came from a military background and is now seeing the world differently, he is lighter on her because she already has the training and needs to not be over extreme in the police force.
The fact that he had to say "I'll cover you" means more than you know. He had to say he was actively guarding her just for her to feel safe to close her eyes. God bless our soldiers
This was such a good episode and I loved the scene with the ladybug. It also really showed how good Bradford was as a T.O. We've seen him train 3-4 rookies and in every instance, he used a different approach, based on what he saw in the rookie.
I loved Barnes in her little cameo. Everything about her gave off military, her hair, preference for a shotgun, and how she runs with it. Gosh I really wish she could make a return 🥹
It's kind of been my experience that the tougher someone is, they have a level of compassion equal to their toughness. Probably because they went through some kind of painful hell to become tough, so they know what it's like. Just like our dear Tim Bradford, here.
I don’t know about everyone else but this episode I saw a side a Tim that i have never seen before knowing how hard it was for Tim to transform from soldier to cop makes me respect more
RIght. I was fully wanting like PTSD storyline and all the stuff she has to go through going from soldier life to cop life. I really hope she comes back
There's an episode of the new Magnum PI that also deals with it: this high-ranking NCO that Rick and TC served with got out, and wound up flaking on the job interview Rick set up for him. They found him in his motel room in his dress uniform completely vaporlocked, because he'd joined up out of high school, spent literally decades in, and for the first time ever he wasn't being told what to do or where to go by someone else.
Well written round character that’s portrayed flawlessly by Miss KatyO. Leaves the character wide open for so many mini-plots. Now I’m interested to view more from her body of work. Bring this character back this season, please!
Seeing as how she actually was a police officer for 7 years, her nailing this character isn't much of a stretch lol. But yeah, I would like to see her come back to this series, the dynamic is interesting...
I'm waiting for Tim and Lucy to become a couple since he is no longer her teacher. Tim was so great explaining how he treats each rookie based on their needs. His character has truely grown on me.
This is my favorite scene of any Rookie episode! It's real! Bradford shows a side of him that rarely is on display! The side that only those who have ever patrolled 'in enemy territory' could ever grasp! Just a show yes! But, one heck of a show!
took me a bit of time to adjust as well, Afghanistan was rough, couldn't just flip the switch and go back to thinking everything is good. Thinking like Tim described was exactly what I did, just took the day as it came, didn't think about all the wrong or bad things, enjoyed each moment and kept my mind off the bad. When you focus on the good, no matter how small it is, eventually, your mind will shift to the good. It does take time.
So true, Tim, so true. Thanks to the writers for showing that there's hope, not just for soldiers, but all of us who sufferers from trauma. Learned a lot. Thank you!
I started getting anxious in public and I was telling my husband the tactical advantages of where we were and he goes “do I need to find you a ladybug?!”
I'd like to wish ya all the best for your future and family. There's hope for all of us. And scenes like this are helping enormously. I feel better after watching, too. Have a wonderful day 💖!
No thanks, police forces need less of these types of officers not more. Treating citizens like enemy combatants and the militarization of the police is a major issue in this country.
I like how Tim used his military experience and try help his new partner by adjusting the police life from her recent military life and telling her she is safe now and her tearing up and he knows what she went through because I think Tim saw the same thing that she saw and to me we don't know what active duty military and retired military saw over sea and some of them don't want tell there stories and some probably do and probably want someone to sit and just listen to their story some might be funny some sad but I do like this episode I think there should be more episodes just like it
I really really wish they'd kept this character around, would have been a great addition to the cast and we could have had some awesome scenes of her adapting to everyday life
that tear was the closing of not a chapter but a whole book not many people know what its like to start new, to let go of such much of what we were trained and start fresh.
I really liked her character and the depth she brought as a rookie with military background. I wish she stayed and they made her character a regular. I also appreciated how Bradford tailored his training to her needs and skillset in comparison to Lucy. It really showed how great of a leader and training officer he is.
The most powerful speech I heard on the difference between fight and order. Remembers me of a true event: During riot in Los Angeles, one police officer asked two Guards "cover me" and proceeded to enter a house to search it. The two Guards shot whole magazines through the door, to suppress any danger. The policeman just had time to dive to the floor, he expected them to aim at the windows, not to fire.
This is the most interesting character that we've been introduced, she changed the dynamic of Tim as TO and touches the issue with exmilitary adjusting to normalicy; and is also a way that the show could introduce a no binary character and they just said "NOPE".
She's only in this one episode (quits at end of episode). Also, I don't recall any reference to her sexuality in the episode. I think the duffus at the beginning of the episode that had the negligent discharge was a more interesting character.
I really want to see her in one of the new seasons, the way she left the show she seemed determined to learn how to live and enjoy life. Seeing her progress would be really nice
I thought Tim’s new rookie was great and was actually disappointed when she decided to leave. 🥺 I sincerely hope that she’ll be back in the future. And Tim was awesome during the entire episode, as usual. 😊
When this moment came I cried for real. They’re very good actors and I hope she doesn’t leave. I hope she stays or at least leaves to take a break and then come back. It was really sad.
It's a shame they didn't make Katy O'Brien a series regular. She found that perfect balance between strong, rigid but also afraid of letting herself be vulnerable. Not a lot of actors can swing that and make it look real.
I loved the scene when Lucy went off on Tim about he is treating the New Boot compared to her. I loved how Tim had to explain to her that he tailors his training to how each individual boot is. Right there you see how good of a TO Tim is. This is another scene in which Tim proves just how intune he is with his Boot's needs. Tim was the ultimate TO on the show in my opinion.
Military life is hard to leave behind. When you are in the field, any moment you could be threatened - you learn to live with your guard up, ready to respond at all times. Some war veterans took decades to leave PTSD behind, if they ever did.
Sergeant, US Army, two tours, Iraq and Afghanistan. Possible connection with the first or second battle of Fallujah. But yeah you're right, it'd be nice to have some details, maybe even a memorable flashback or two.
Definitely more relatable and believable than that superstitious Celina character who just joined the force to find out why her mother is such a nutjob.
It's a moment. He would have still trained Barnes in the same manner as Chen. The difference is with Barnes, combat vet recognizing combat vet and the problems with transitioning and trading one uniform for another. Unfortunately, it's tough to break the mindset from combat ops, and the two missions (military and police) couldn't be any more polar opposite from each other. Military in country is pointed at a target and told to put enough rounds down range until threat is neutralized. Police, that sidearm is supposed to be the last option when all others have failed. His first duty as a TO is to get Barnes started into that mindset. If he can't get her there, she's not going to learn or is going to react in a way that's natural to her, but totally against what being a peace officer means.
I really liked her. Shame that she was only in one episode. It would have been great to see her recover, heal and find balance in her life as a police officer.
While it was a shame she was only in for one episode, I still love she made the decision to live her life away from the guns and violence. Hopefully she moves past the war and comes back as an amazing police officer!
