Just picked up a 2017 with 9k miles, so touring the web for tips. I don't know what the intent was for these - the range is so low, it's hard to believe that that was ever a prime consideration. I drive in Sport, almost always and the perf is great - it's quicker than the 2017 M6 Gran Coupe I traded in for it. However, what I do really love is the ability to switch to allow-electric, when traffic situations make Sport a waste of time. Did this yesterday and drove the last 5 miles home on electric, as the roads became stop-start.
I love and hate this car. One major issue is the battery. I have a i3, my daily commute uses 25% of the range leading to a fraction of a charge cycle. Lithium ion batteries have some many charge cycles. If you wanted to take fully advantages of fuel savings in the i8 you are going to eat a full charge cycle every time you drive it. With LTO batteries around the corner I really hope they plan to double or triple the electric range and have upgrade options.

Except it's actually more than that, because Tesla has a more efficient aerodynamics and motor - particularly the all-wheel drive, so even with air con on, the top range Tesla can do 240+ miles.
How many hours can you drive it from full charge to empty in one day? Or how many miles can you get out of a full charge total... How long dose it take to charge up?

And if you mean just "in general" driving until empty - you'd be stuck in a gasoline car, too if you drove it until it was completely empty.
Go up a hill with your lights on and 3 miles of electric can disappear in less than a mile. I've noticed as soon as the electric hits zero, it switches the engine on but worryingly, as soon as the petrol runs out, it switches to electric - which suggests there's no reserve and if you don't have electric, you'll stop. I averaged 44mpg with a full charge driving down to London - 250 miles. Across Europe, doing more interesting speeds, over 2,000 miles it did 36.5mph. Pretty impressive if you compare it to similar exotica.

In pure electric drive, your i8 is still way faster than my mountain bike ha ha, best I've had out of that on the road is 22mph flat out and I'm always on the watch out for cars, other cyclists and Motorcyclists aswell when I'm out on the road on my bike. And no different when I'm driving aswell, i look out for all road users. I think once solid state battery technology comes, where you can get 500 mile range per charge and a charge takes no longer than 5 mins, electric cars will take over.
So would you rather have: $150,000 BMW i8 that can do 24km on electric and do 0-100kms in 4.4secs w/gas or $117,000 Tesla S 90D that can do 473kms on electric and still do 0-100km in 4.4secs w/o gas.
They're completely totally different vehicles. i8 would be more properly compared to a Tesla Roadster. Which costs a *LOT* more. If I was looking for an exotic-looking sports car, I'd buy the i8 for certain. If I was looking for a luxury sedan, the Model S for certain. That's like asking about a Nissan Leaf versus a Honda Civic Type-R. Totally different vehicles. Totally different market segments.
I do love these things, maybe new battery tech, maybe new motors could see it improve? Its still a carbon tub and fine tech for now... a lot less than they were.
Im thinking of buying an i8, and on my bumper to bumper crawling traffic commute in the morning, use electric mode. It'll get me there as its 9 miles. However, when I'm at work, I'd want to charge it so I've got enough battery for the crawl home. Is there any way to charge up something like a portable powerbank which I could charge throughout the working day, then connect that to the i8 before I leave?

The newer models now have 33 miles total but in reality Max is 30 but I overcharge and get 33 sometimes it’s better for the battery to get full charge and take it off right away and then drain it all the way and recharge
Such a silly comment... The Tesla and the i8 are different cars with vastly different designs.... You want acceleration on the i8, you need the combustion engine. Period.

Also when you get to charging station how long do you have to leave it on charge to get full charge? I know most batteries lose life faster when it's cold outside. is it like that on Hybrid vehicles batteries also?
Damn I remember running frightingly low on battery in a Tesla Model S out on an island with no proper chargers around.. I had to plug it in to a regular outlet in the house we stayed at and let it charge overnight and that barely got us to a proper Tesla charger a few miles into the inland. Thought for sure I was gonna have to call triple A for a while there -.-

You floored it for your 0-60. That's what killed you're range, not the AC.

But as you see it may vary a lot since you can charge it, you can even get unlimited miles on the right road😂
Technically that wasn't a dual carriage way as there is no physical divide in the road to separate the lanes therefore speed limit is still 60 mph 👍🏻
