No need to compare... enjoy it all. There are very few bands with this much musical prowess and diversity.

What they've done over the years, specifically everything post Watershed, is embrace a certain aspect of their sound. The metal band is basically gone, and has been replaced by a progressive rock band. They're still plenty heavy on certain songs, but not the same way they used to be. Which is great! We have multiple albums of both types of music, and Mikael is such a genius songwriter and the band is such stellar musicians that it's all wonderful to hear. I hope the "Newpeth" end up working for you overall and glad this one grew on you!

I love how she goes silent during the musical interlude at around the 6-7 minute marks. Those instrumentals are absolutely delicious. And it’s such a trippy song overall.

By edge, you probably mean the heavy metal guitar layers they laid on their older songs with tinge of melancholy & restrained rage. This on the other hand, while having a ingenious original melody, is sparsely produced, spaced out, more of 70s prog indulgence & definitely on abstract type of emotion, which probably hints at the way Mikael’s life & music has evolved towards. Also arrival of Fredrick Akesson has resulted in these neo classical music kind of guitar solos. (Even though Mikael compose most of them, he is an admirer of Fred & certainly has taken some inspiration heritage album onwards)
There is a song called ‘River’ in this album & ‘Lovelorn Crime’ on the newest one, which have more of that melancholic melody feel
And the old opeth feeling can be found in the demonless twin songs of ‘A fair judgement’ & ‘Face of Melinda’

I recommend you A Fair Judgment... Bit different from Opeth, not their old neither their new era... But it's beautiful, very jazzy

I think your initial reaction on first listen was a great summary of the whole Opeth situation. So many fans had that reaction, and many of them never really pushed through it to appreciate the music created by the 'new band'. Personally, I still enjoy the new albums (Heritage least of all) but for me they have trimmed down the set of performative tools available to them, and will probably never create such powerful music as they did prior to the change.
I would recommend sticking to Newpeth for a while to avoid continual readjustment. Track suggestion: 'All Things Will Pass' off their most recent album.

Oh, you've done that one, and I missed it... Maybe I really should hit that bell :D

I still love Opeth but the "Newpeth" or whatever direction they've taken after Heritage is simply not the music that made me fall in love with this band. Does that mean "Newpeth" makes bad music or they sold out or something? No, Mike is still writing pretty good music. But by removing death vocals and the death metal music a big part of what made Opeth songs dynamic and interesting was lost in my opinion.
As Lauren mentioned, it just doesnt feel like the same band to me at times. It feels like some obscure 70s prog rock band I never heard about. Again, nothing wrong with that and I am not shitting on Newpeth, it's just not what made me fall in love with them. Kinda an hyperbole but if Metallica suddenly started to compose the greatest symphonic metal songs in history I would still not be content because it just wouldnt be Metallica because Metallica is thrash metal and that's what I wanna hear.

You should do a one off reaction one day to Bloodbath live at Wacken 2005, the best recording of Mikael's growls at his peak. Eaten is the best song but all the rest of the tracks are good.

Opeth is an ever evolving band,
There is no single album that is similar to the one preceding it,
And there were indicators of the direction they were heading to.
Of course, the change from Watershed to Heritage (and then onwards) was more dramatic, but it's still the same brilliant musicianship.
Both are enjoyable in different ways.

As a hardcore Opethian, I have learned to love it ALL....its all dark, artistic, beautiful, scary, imaginative, poetic, and amazing. Mikael is a genius regardless of what music he makes.

So, I am an old Opeth fan, pardon the pun, and I have been listening the Pale Communion album for three weeks or so. Twice daily, most days. Each track, better than the last. Ending with Faith in Others, I just really like the whole album, a lot.... If I were you, Lauren, (haha), I would quickly react to the rest of the album, so then, at last, I could listen to this groove at leisure.

😄 Cusp Of Eternity, Scorceress or The Wild Flowers. I keep on suggesting. It's a bit more rocky, catchy and listenable. Or from the mid era Porcelain Heart (without growls) or The Lotus Eater (wich is such a weard one that I think you must hear it) It's the one I told you about before in the commentsection. It's a question/answer game between the cruelest demon and the most clear cleans. Amazing changes of pace, a must hear for sure.

  • @jonkwape3097

Yeah, finally:) Personally for me that was an Opeth album which was a balm for what I suppose was the start of my midlife crysis hehe and it came out just right in time perfectly:) Still shares the first place with Heritage among the newer Opeth albums for me. Just listen to Faith in Others to get what I mean, I was just speechless for days when I heard it. So I don't consider it the loss of the edge, for me it's more like a GrowPeth and facing life in more mature yet still the same melancholy way. I do miss Mikael's growls though, but I return to older Opeth and Bloodbath for those now and then, so it's win-win.

I think for many of us long time Opeth fans we kind of went through a lot of the same journies you went through in this video, but for us it was with the album Heritage (the first "newPeth" album if you will). The first (main) track "The Devil's Orchard" both very much felt like an Opeth track but also showed that we shouldn't hold them to old conventions anymore.
From their newer works I would highly recommend "Eternal Rains Will Come", "Chrysalis", "Era", or "Allting Tar Slut" (yes that's Swedish and doesn't mean what you think).

Even though I like all the albums by them, we can not compare the two "life" of opeth.... Before they were gods, now they make some good and some great songs, but nothing more. People seem like they have to speak good about everything they make, but I am completely honest to myself and I think they went from creating a style to some new version of older bands

Music is selective by choice, what the ears "like" the heart follows, ill fully understand why some people dont like "newpeth" Its not for everyone. as for me, i grew up with music from all walks of life, but chose what i liked (to each his own) at first "newpeth" was a hard pill to swollow, i did not understand, but i listened and realized that mikael had slowly gone to his "roots" and did what was in his heart, after listening i completely love all of Opeth, new and old, its such a diverse mix and mash of the best music ive always loved. keep listening and you will open your ears to greatness.

    My Opeth favo!
Opeth wrote a lot af good "Opeth hits" 15-20 years ago.
Frome there, they are better musicians and songwriters and if you guys have problems like i have it s only becourse we have been sitting on the bench to much!
If you dont like it now you gonna like it later!
But this song is a Opeth masterpeace througe the Opeth history!
