In one of Martins Licis videos from about 4-5 years ago when he was training with Thor he was talking to Benny about the deadlift and Benny said he just went to that competition "to take the piss" and never really took training all that seriously and treated it as a hobby. Maybe after hitting that record he decided he was happy with where he was and dialed back his training The video is "Savage Training, But First A Haircut" on Martins channel if anyone wants to check it out
Benni used to work & train in a gym I was at around 2016 ish (I was about 15/16). He was always a super friendly guy (despite being such a monster) & was generous with his wisdom. I’d heard he had the DL world record but I don’t think I quite appreciated what that meant at the time. Hope he’s doing well wherever he is now 👊🏼
You guys actually did something that I don't see many people actually doing when brining up allegations of the plates being shaved or not properly calibrated, that Benni had actually done close to that number before. Just as you guys had pointed out, he had done 975lbs/443kg in a full meet before, after having done a 837lb/ 379kg squat and a 485lb/220kg bench. He did a full meet, without sandbag lifts before hand, and still got within 40lbs of it. That's close enough that having not squatted and benched before could have been the difference. And he was also nearly 30lbs heavier. With the suit, looking at his openpowerlifting, he competed in single ply for a while (which makes sense, that's about all there was at that point) and his best deadlift in singleply looks to be 903 in 2005, then a few months later he did 970 raw. Granted, it looks like he took some easy attempts on squat and bench, but I don't think it'd affect it enough to make that much of a difference. And some guys just honestly don't get much out of deadlift suits, especially bigger guys. I've heard of guys talk about how larger guys have a harder time getting into proper position with a heavier deadlift suit, so the suits that would be most likely to add weight to the lift are also the ones that take them out of proper positions the most. Benni also started acquiring injuries. In an old issue of Power Magazine, he says he had torn his pec or shoulder, tore a hamstring or something, I remember at one point reading he had a hernia surgery, then he also tore a bicep around 2014, partially tore a hamstring a few years ago. I'm not 100% but I also think that around the time he did the 461 in Strongman, he was going through some issues in his private lift, not 100% on that.
That shot of Benny breaking the world record with Andy Bolton cheering him on in the foreground has got to be one of the best images in strength sports
If they were a lower tolerance plate its far more likely they weighed more than a comp plate with a high tolerance. Having bought those kind of plates for years they are usually over than under due to the manufacturing checking that it at least weight the minimum...
The theory is that they selected plates purposefully for their light weight(so they had enough of them to sort out?🤣 and they were kilos off), it's all stupid hater garbage from people with the personality of garden slugs in hopes of getting some attention. They have no proof.
@@emacliftsalot When I hit my lifetime PR of 525 I didn't feel all that great and it was just a random day at the gym, the weight just kept moving. Maybe someone had that good Frog Juice backstage too.
And it still holds up. Not many get even close to 460kg, especially as clean as this. Could even be used as an instruction on how to deadlift - good form, no hitching/shaking, full lockout, even held it at the top longer than needed as set the bar down slowly.
Some people really tried to present Benny not improving his record as evidence that he didn't really do it the first time. Like yeah bro just break the world record a few more times. Crazy. If it was that simple then Lasha would be on the road to 550 not 500.
I have heard of the controversy, at least in passing, but it never sounded like plates just being slightly off. Sounded more like fake plates or rather plates that are actual kilos lighter at every event of that organiser's. Allegedly. I have no idea personally
I think deadlift suit mostly helps with the breaking the bar off the floor and Benni didn't really have trouble with that. Lockout seemed to be the more challenging part.
He does, last I knew. Though, it's starting to get to the point that the actual equipment is making a difference. He's primarily used the kabuki deadlift bar for his records which is a noodle bar if I've ever seen one. I think I remember a while ago, someone actually comparing the Kabuki deadlift bar to other deadlift bars and it was actually a bit longer, meaning the weight would cause the bar to whip even more. An Okie deadlift bar is pretty tame compared to some of the deadlift bars now.
@@philipmeisterl My point exactly. As much issue as powerlifting has with different federations having different regulations or standards, do we really need a deadlift bar making that much of a difference? Depending on the weight class, that's difference between between going from 10th all time to 1st or second. A lot of people may hate the IPF, but at least the have a very definitive standard. The same equipment will be used in America, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, wherever. The bars are gonna be the same kind.
@@philipmeisterl Yeah, I've seen more than a few times where international IPF judges will error on the side of caution the other way as most feds. Not 100% it was below depth? Red light. Hell, ive heard some guys say theyve talked to international judges who also expect the torso to be near vetival on a squat as well, and will red light a lift for that not happening, even if they hit depth, ie top of the hip joint below the top of the knee. Like, back in the day, if you squatted X in the SPF or WPO, you may have hit depth. If you squatted X in the IPF, you hit depth. I think its a bit better now with how many things are livesteamed or recorded amd still make their way online. If some dude squats a quarter mile high and it gets passed, theres gonna be backlash, and then the promoter has to deal with the backlash. People will call out shenanigans, especially powerlifters. Proof of that is that meet the lilliebridges had back in the day that was such a hot mess the federation dropped the entire meet so none of the attempts or records would be recognized. There were people who knew and trained with the Lilliebridges who were calling them out on it. That whole thing was a mess.
Imagine people accusing Benny of fake weights, pretty much why I won't watch Rubish anymore. You get a bunch of "non factors" in the strength community accusing Benny, a person that no one will say a bad thing about and it's not because they fear him.
pretty sure Dan Grigsby deadlifted 487.5kg in the last year or 2 in a legit competition- th-cam.com/video/lPOLddnFqEs/w-d-xo.html | It was sumo - which I know not everyone loves, and his ROM is that of a child, but those the rules..

Always lol
I think the only bad thing about the deadlift is that it was done on a deadlift bar lmao

They need to accuse Benny to his face. Greatest deadlift of all time.
Benni got hurt and got off gear. He had terrible back hip and bicep pain.

No word of a lie, but this video inspired to start working out back in the day haha.
Ah lads , how did you not mention Andy Bolton
Him and Benny were in fierce competition and the 1015 was Bennys end to that rivalry
I think Jamal Browner can get there soon…

You got to get a nose bleed for the lift to count.
JoshStrength's deadlift was soooooo fast!
and the best pre lift hype
