Hey, I just opened my first ever merch store. You can grab sweet cutting mats, mugs, t-shirts, hoodies, and a patch for your blue jean vest! Check it out: miniac.bigcartel.com/
Imma be honest the moment the wash dried I was like "Aight that's ready, he's right, that was fast" Miniac: "Now we do 200 layers of highlights" Me: Oh...
I paint a lot of miniatures with the wash technic, if you do not want more paint level is perfect, i have thousands of roleplay miniatures, and i cant give 4 hours of mi life XD Sorry for the 5 years child english, im working on it XD
Just wanna say... ur vibe is incredible. Ur logo... the music you pick... the quality of your painting... the way you present your content. In a world where a bunch of people are trying to put out content in this genre... and doing it poorly, you stand out as a quality content creator. Props to you man... hope you continue to succeed
I used to paint a dozen an hour... By painting all at the same time. Affix the figure to a handle, and have a handle rack to put them in when working on another. Pick the color that will be used the most and apply it to every piece in the places where it is needed. By the time you are done with the last, the first will be dry enough to appy the next color. Just keep cycling through the figures. I never used an airbrush. I did glue an eyelash to a toothpick for detail work.
I'm digging the bladerunner soundtrack on this video. Cannot get over the amazing quality of this video, you can see pretty much everything that's going on, instead of squinting at pixels trying to figure out where the paint is going.
Seriously the best tutorial I've seen on here so far (and I've seen a few) - composition, explanations, lights, sounds, didactics.... all very good applied - thx!!
I keep coming back to this video over and over again :D It helps immensely to focus on getting great result much faster. I've got some minis that are painted in like 25%-35% from top but still look positively amazing to me.
I feel like I needed this video. I've been painting minis for almost a year and I try really hard to get the essentials down and then some techniques such as wet blending and feathering. I know I'm good enough but I want to start finishing models more. This feels like a great way to improve while also getting your minis done. Great video
I agree a 1000% about the burn out issue, happens to me all the time coupled that with the eye sight and now you really don’t have a party! I’m great full for your tips. Wished I had taken known this stuff before straining to paint my dark elf kill team.
Excatly what I need! It's hard to find video's for speed painting. I know a lot of people who just wants to have their minis ready for the table, not to be a work of art :D Thank you wery much!
Got me keen to give the zenithal highlighting thing a go Scott! Thanks for really breaking down the ‘hierarchy of design’ concept of important details being the more obvious/brightest shade value on the model.
Hey thanks a ton for putting in the brush steps without the airbrush, I plan to eventually get one but for space reasons I can't. Its really considerate to do the extra work for us brush samurais it helps a lot.
It is 4.30 pm, and here I am, still did not leave my bed, and still watching miniac vids. Love the content bro! Thanks allot, I have picked up my brush again after a full year of nothing mini related!
Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I needed as I take my 1st real plunge into painting war gaming minis. I just picked up 2 AoS Tzeentch starter boxes and the silver tower board game. The idea of painting so many models becomes less daunting with this lesson.
great tutorial dude. only thing I would say is, matte varnish the mini BEFORE applying the blood. that way the blood still appears wet and isnt dulled down at all by the varnish.
Speed painting without losing quality. . . yeah. . . man that looks as good if not better than most minis I spend hours upon hours painting. You have amazing skills!
When applying the wash: > Coat mini in gloss-varnish > Use oil-paint (more difficult) or GW gloss wash > Try to only apply into recesses Neater result and saves you time in the long run
Great instructing and very efficient. Clear, concise, quick tutorial and pleasant to listen to. I've been on a 2 year hiatus from painting miniatures and have more than I think I could finish in a lifetime. I'm very interested into trying to learn to airbrush them. Plus that should also speed up the process.
I apologies if this is a question you have been asked before but it looks like you have removed the inverted cone from the nose of your air brush. is this done for a reason, and dose affect the spray significantly?
really high production values! the best lighting setup i've seen for this kind of channel, although I find the models look better lit when you are working on them rather than when they are being displayed.
Scott I absolutely love your videos and you have helped me decide to try out this hobby. I used to airbrush for a job and it just seems nice to go back to my roots. You have sincerely earned my sub and I hope to be able to help your patreon in the future.
Simple way of speed painting minis 1.) Base-coat areas on the mini 2.) Shade the base-coated parts with desired wash 3.) Varnish with Matt or gloss 4.) *DUN*
I'm in the too many boardgame miniature's camp and I'm a prefectionist when it comes to painting. This is good advice that I need to remember when painting minis.
Very useful video, I play a lot of board games and like to paint those miniatures too. Even though they are sometimes made of some "soft" plastic that does not take paint as easily as the "hard" plastic of sprues does. It would also be interesting to see the same miniature painted with and without airbrush. To compare the time spent and the end result. It doesn't matter if it is for a board game or a war game, just tabletop quality.
True, but it was different minis, a mummy and a knight...it would be better for comparison that both were the exact same mini (or some pose variation).
Fantastic! I stood yesterday looking at all my minis from Massive Darkness and thought they just need a bit paint not perfection. This video helped perfect my speedpainting idea. Thanks! Feels like it would be so much easier if I'd own an air brush.
BRB, gonna add a few quick highlights to a couple of large figures I painted a while back that look muddy and indistinct even with many layers of detail because the upper and lower parts are too similar
Hey thank you for sharing! It's actually a quite good guide for nice table top figure and at the same time, easily displayable! I love the idea of putting contrast colors in there too :)
I don't have an air brush but I tried what you said about making the mini brighter as you move up. While I still suck at painting there is a marked improvement in the finished work. Thank you. I will be watching this video a few more times and will probably be purchasing an air brush. Which airbrush do you use?
Yes to 2 hours are quite sufficient for a pretty good quality of 1 figurine coloring if a brush is used. Another question if you have to make 30-40 figurines for 2 hours is really a lot of time, and I personally tire and do not make more than 3 figurines at once they are between 4-5 hours with a brush. In my opinion, the most important kogat coloring figurine to do it with pleasure. If you do it only to have a set of figurines you will not get well. Slowly and willingly.
How would this effect work if you were trying to do an extremely dark color. Or even trying to do a black cloak? Is there anything different that would need to be done?
Thank you for the video. My challenge is getting to done. My strategy is going to be a recipe with a limited number of paints and steps: prime, base, shade, details, plinth - squint quality. Hey, I am old so deal with presbyopia. Who am I painting these toy solders for anyway?
Are there any videos where you don't speed up any of the video. I just got started last Saturday and the basic details are what i am struggling with (amount of water to thin it out, painting order of a mini, etc.
Great video, tons of amazing tips. As a brush painter I have one question though; If I don't have aerosol available is there anything else I can use? Maybe some kind of weak wash? I'm still pretty new to mini painting and trying to keep my set-up fairly basic. Cheers from Canada!
Hey Scott! Great video, but I didn’t understood very well the multi layer part on the airbrush method. You basically painted the miniature with the base color from the knees up, then mixed it with white, painted from the waist up, mixed with even more white and so on?
Great video. Speed up on the hand painted mini makes it hard to witness the painting techniques used, maybe slowing that down in sections would be a good idea? Thanks!
Scott, would you zenithal highlight a model who's armor is mostly black? I'm wanting to do a high gloss, black armor with an arm done in purple as an accent.
Picasso once said that it took five years to learn how to paint like the masters but a lifetime to learn to paint like a child. I mention this because you made pilgrimage to adepticon to attend a master class where you were taught to paint like a factory worker. (prepainted figs) I do not know if this is positive or negative. probably neither. what it is is a certain approach (I wouldn't really label it a technique, would you?) that makes sense in some situations. this is all sounding a bit pejorative but what I actually want to express is gratitude. to my knowledge this video is unique and valuable. thank you.
I'm not sure how to respond to this comment, but I'm glad you think the video is valuable. I do not think it's necessarily a technique, but rather a collection of techniques that form an approach, as you suggest. The quote is cool, to be sure, but I'm not quite sure how it relates; maybe you can explain :)
I admire you for going to adepticon and especially attending that class. that you have done such an excellent job in relaying your learning experience to us is truly elevating. but it is kind of like a celebrity chef traveling to a remote and strange city to work at street stalls to figure out how they BBQ crustaceans on a stick.
Bruh how do you change the gradient on miniatures with strict color schemes. for example warhammer 40k Tyranids where the carapace and the body are 2 colors only, they dont have metallic items, shoulder pads or clothing, not to mention usually they are sideways and not upright. How do we speed paint those?
Whenever I see videos like this, I wonder what purpose the air brush is? It seems like you could have accomplished the same base color by simply priming in white instead of black and then just highlighting after the wash or being more careful with your wash. It seems like if you really want to speed paint and get at least acceptable paint jobs, this is the method I would use: 1) prime with white, 2) base colors, 3) apply wash, and 4) doing any highlights necessary. If I am really doing an assembly line for something like Zombiecide, I will just do step 1 and 2 and then do a quickshade for all colors using the dip and dry method.
the strength of the airbrush comes to the forefront when you basecoat in a different way. When you basecoat with a more translucent color, the light values achieved via the airbrush are evident. If you just basecoat normally, there's almost no purpose.
These are really nice and informative videos. Thank you! I was wondering if the last airbrush step you do with ink (spaying light color from above and darker from below) could be done with thinned paint as well? If yes what would be the proper kind of dilution to apply? Btw, when you spray your white paint "thinned a lot" from above after the layering, what do you aim for? I do not see anything change while your spraying it?
You are an excellent teacher,. I’ve learned so much with this video.. thank you. It would be cool to see a close up of the mini you are done with...? Vary good. Your upstate New York fan.
How do you get your brushes to look so perfect when you paint? I literally just got some new Raphael 8404 brushes and I can't get the tips to look as fine as yours no matter what I do!
Aww man, this video is so helpful! I honestly wish I had the money to help support this channel as your videos gives me the inspiration to... PAINT... MORE... MINIS!
That's subjective. I don't like the way he's painting these, it's complete Overkill for something that's going to be used in a game. I also really dislike the idea of painting on lighting elements for a mini that will be used in a game. To each their own
I enjoy going back and watching these old videos, mostly to wonder how horrified your wife must have been to see you painting your fingers! Always amazed how you can spend twenty minutes on a mini and it looks pretty awesome where I invest hours upon hours and it looks like something my dog crapped out after eating chocolate! Oh well, perhaps a boxing match?
Hey Scott. I watched your intro series and rounded it off with this video. Good stuff. I do have a question though, why do you paint metals and wash them after the initial base layer/shading step?
The metals were painted with full opacity unlike the original base tones which were done with a higher amount of dilution. Additionally, for the metals, I used a black wash as opposed to a brown wash for the rest of the figure. I assume you're asking because it makes sense to wash everything at the same time and basecoat everything at the same time, but there isn't much to be gained when painting a single figure and using different colored washes. You might say that having to wait for 2 distinct wash stages to dry might be time lost, but I use a hair drier to dry most of my washes which expedites the process. It kind of comes down to personal preference, I guess my mind split up those two steps for the reasons I mentioned initially, but it doesn't have to be that way.
Hey, I just opened my first ever merch store. You can grab sweet cutting mats, mugs, t-shirts, hoodies, and a patch for your blue jean vest! Check it out: miniac.bigcartel.com/
Hey quick question my mans, what size is the mat?
Sell painted miniatures on there and it would be bad ass
seems there is no merch available.
Imma be honest the moment the wash dried I was like
"Aight that's ready, he's right, that was fast"
Miniac: "Now we do 200 layers of highlights"
Me: Oh...
Same here ^^

Sorry for the 5 years child english, im working on it XD
Actually I thought by the time he was done doing the wash, it was looking good, but that’s fast?? And then he started adding a gazillion layers.
So glad you are showing off a NON-AIRBURSH technique for speed painting thanks!
Yeah I figure if someone is looking to paint minis for a board game or D&D, they're not gonna have an airbrush.
So people that paint wargames HAVE to have an airbrush? ;)
Nertea nope
except for the part where he uses an airbrush?
what the whole video, my dude
I used to paint a dozen an hour... By painting all at the same time.
Affix the figure to a handle, and have a handle rack to put them in when working on another.

I love how you lead to your ad's instead of how a lot of people just let you get spooked.
Seriously the best tutorial I've seen on here so far (and I've seen a few)

First video of yours that I've studied as a new airbrush trainee. VERY good video. Great insight. No wasted time. Great editing. Learned a lot.
I feel like I needed this video. I've been painting minis for almost a year and I try really hard to get the essentials down and then some techniques such as wet blending and feathering. I know I'm good enough but I want to start finishing models more. This feels like a great way to improve while also getting your minis done. Great video
Just have to say these videos are awesome - informative and no-nonsense

Wait, the metallic paints are actually called “thrash metal” and “speed metal”? That’s pretty neat.
Yes! Scale75's metallic paint range has Black Metal, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, and Speed Metal!
Miniac as long as they avoid Nu metal and sport metal everything will be grand
No Power Metal? :(
surely prog metal would be a series of ascending highlights in various shades of metal, creating a progression.
prog metal could be the line of paints title
This guy is a prophet...
HE WAS MORBIN' 4 YEARS BEFORE IT WAS COOL.
It is 4.30 pm, and here I am, still did not leave my bed, and still watching miniac vids. Love the content bro! Thanks allot, I have picked up my brush again after a full year of nothing mini related!
Get outta bed!!
@@Miniac you do not get full credits, this fever is helping as well, but you sure help pass the day! I might get some work in tomorrow😉🤘🏾
Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I needed as I take my 1st real plunge into painting war gaming minis. I just picked up 2 AoS Tzeentch starter boxes and the silver tower board game. The idea of painting so many models becomes less daunting with this lesson.
Oh man this is so much better than any official Citadel stuff I've seen! So many clever tips!
I'm glad it's useful!
great tutorial dude. only thing I would say is, matte varnish the mini BEFORE applying the blood. that way the blood still appears wet and isnt dulled down at all by the varnish.
Wonderfully clear, economical explanations. Very grateful to you, I have rethought my approach totally.
i keep coming back to this after any time away from painting.. its a great refresher to jump right back in without having to think too much about it..
Speed painting without losing quality. . . yeah. . . man that looks as good if not better than most minis I spend hours upon hours painting. You have amazing skills!
Thank you!
OMG, this is genius! Gonna bookmark this sucker for when I start on my next batch of minis
Easily the best "quick paint" video I've seen. I've not used an airbrush for Miniatures, but I'm very intrigued this moment.
When applying the wash:
> Coat mini in gloss-varnish
> Use oil-paint (more difficult) or GW gloss wash
> Try to only apply into recesses

I apologies if this is a question you have been asked before but it looks like you have removed the inverted cone from the nose of your air brush. is this done for a reason, and dose affect the spray significantly?
I've tried finding people who make good painting videos and these are probably the best I've come upon. Great job
really high production values! the best lighting setup i've seen for this kind of channel, although I find the models look better lit when you are working on them rather than when they are being displayed.
He's a miniac, miniac and more! And he's painting like he's never paintsed before.
Yea... You went there.. Haha.
Finally some actual painting lol good job
It always amazes me how much a wash instantly improves the look. If you were to stop right there it still would have looked great on the table.
Highly informative. I have to say that you continue to impress not only with the content but also with the production value of your videos. Cheers!
Dude I love the music in this video, so easy to zone out to while painting my own stuff

hi imma noob in this stuffs... are those painted minifigures waterproof?
will the paint go off after getting contact with water?
Very useful video, I play a lot of board games and like to paint those miniatures too. Even though they are sometimes made of some "soft" plastic that does not take paint as easily as the "hard" plastic of sprues does.

Mentoliptus Banko I did exactly what you said in this video, friend! I painted two versions with and without an airbrush. Thanks for the kind words.
True, but it was different minis, a mummy and a knight...it would be better for comparison that both were the exact same mini (or some pose variation).
Awesome with the side by side!
Fantastic! I stood yesterday looking at all my minis from Massive Darkness and thought they just need a bit paint not perfection. This video helped perfect my speedpainting idea. Thanks! Feels like it would be so much easier if I'd own an air brush.
It certainly helps, but is definitely not necessary. You cant do it!!
BRB, gonna add a few quick highlights to a couple of large figures I painted a while back that look muddy and indistinct even with many layers of detail because the upper and lower parts are too similar
I really like how you've explained this, very well put.
Hello, how long do you wait between the different colors for air brush? Thank you
Hey Scot - do you have a link for the awesome artwork behind you in this vid
What paints are you using for the knight? The matte red is super pleasant to look at
Hey thank you for sharing! It's actually a quite good guide for nice table top figure and at the same time, easily displayable! I love the idea of putting contrast colors in there too :)
I don't have an air brush but I tried what you said about making the mini brighter as you move up. While I still suck at painting there is a marked improvement in the finished work. Thank you. I really like your techniques approach videos. You explained the theory very well.

Wow, amazing work dude... I´m a complete newbie but im learning a lot....Will use this techniques to apply on my 3d prints.
Do you think an air brush is necessary? or can you have good results without?
watch the whole video
Where did you buy those miniatures? theys pretty cool....
How would this effect work if you were trying to do an extremely dark color. Or even trying to do a black cloak?
Is there anything different that would need to be done?
What is that Mummy minature if I may ask? It looks amazing
Thank you for the video. My challenge is getting to done. My strategy is going to be a recipe with a limited number of paints and steps: prime, base, shade, details, plinth - squint quality. Hey, I am old so deal with presbyopia. Who am I painting these toy solders for anyway?
Thank you for this video! It makes me less anxious to just start painting my on D&D minis.
Are there any videos where you don't speed up any of the video. I just got started last Saturday and the basic details are what i am struggling with (amount of water to thin it out, painting order of a mini, etc.
do you always prime with airbrush?
Well that was a great video. Loved the format, art work on point.. just great
Hey Scott, what company(ies) made the warrior priest and mummy/tomb king? They're perfect for representing characters in Warhammer!

Hey Scott! Great video, but I didn’t understood very well the multi layer part on the airbrush method. You basically painted the miniature with the base color from the knees up, then mixed it with white, painted from the waist up, mixed with even more white and so on?
Romero Araujo Filho yep, that's it! It doesn't need to be white, however. it can be any highlight color.
Like that you airbrush one and Paint brush the other. some of us don't own airbrushes. but it is nice to see both.
I think another cool idea for a video would be to see your opinion on the Nolzur’s Marvelous Minis series
thank you for this video. its exactly what i was looking for.
And just as I finished assembling all of my Necromunda minis!
What were the colours used on the second mini? Loved the red!
How much do you dilute the paints to make them translucent enough? l always mix too much or too little medium with the paint...
Can you use the same technique of a thin layer of color over the base coat with metallics?
Great video. Speed up on the hand painted mini makes it hard to witness the painting techniques used, maybe slowing that down in sections would be a good idea? Thanks!
Scott, would you zenithal highlight a model who's armor is mostly black? I'm wanting to do a high gloss, black armor with an arm done in purple as an accent.
