    I still remember the layout and going through that old K-Mart like the back of my hand. Bought my first Wii there. In the 21 years I’ve been around, the center court never had a fountain. Just used for events

    My Dad used to work at the K Mart next to the Mall. I always thought it was cool how the K Mart lead into the Mall when I was little. Miss a lot of old stores.

    Spent a ton of time there as a kid. School clothes shopping, Aladdin's Castle arcade, the food court, Phar-Mor because they sold better CDs than the other stores. A girl from my High School won the design contest for it's first logo.

    Mine isn’t the biggest Clark gas station, but there’s one about five minutes away from me. It is operational too. Anyways the Ashtabula mall is a really nice small aesthetic wise, however they are maintaining it pretty poorly, and security is not the nicest as I got kicked out when I was there for filming. Great video

      @TiltedTripodMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I saw your video. Not trying to be rude but what did you do wrong to attract attention? I’ve never had any encounters with security at this mall in fact never even seen security the half dozen times I’ve been there. I enjoyed your video

      @@TiltedTripodMedia I really don’t know, we had our cameras low too, so they really weren’t that obvious. I’m guessing the security guard just had a bad day, but like I said I have never seen security there during my past visits, that was the very first time I saw them

    There's a lot of activity happening around the mall area,but nothing new inside the mall. I've heard that the rent inside the mall was too high for most smaller businesses to absorb the cost and stay profitable.

    Interesting. I was just up in this area a couple of weeks ago checking out the covered bridges in the county, and had no idea this place existed. If I make it back up there soon, I'll make this place a priority for sure. Thanks for the footage.

    I think this mall was a hard sell when the prior owner still had it, but he was very willing and accommodating to new business, and he also has a great reputation. The new owner not so much, and after his debacle in Akron I'm amazed anyone has stayed. Unfortunately this mall has had a devastating impact on Ashtabula, it destroyed downtown. I do see downtown coming back eventually, the mall I don't.

    • @TiltedTripodMedia
      @TiltedTripodMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not to be a downer but I don’t see Ashtabula coming back not unless the Cleveland area expands and swallows it up but that’s unlikely and it’s too bad cuz it has potential

    I heard stories from older guys of my company that, before i worked there that they would hand out mall vouchers for a good safety record and no incidents. I dont know the exact amount, it was some where around $75, i think. They could spend it in any store in the mall. Then they did away with the program. Thats when the older guys said that was the decline of this mall. Between the two plants we had about 500 employees . To bad. It was a good way to support our community.

      @@TiltedTripodMedia It was usually things like a car from a local dealership. "Santa" was there for Christmas. When it first opened, it was huge. Anchored by JC Penney, Sears, Dillard's, K-Mart (with a supermarket!), Phar-Mor, and Steve and Barry's. It was quite the spot. As industry left the area (nearly 30 chemical plants - most about 1/2 a mile north of the mall) left, it became your typical dead mall.
      The area itself is nice in the summer, with some decent regional tourism. The lake is handy for that. As in so many other stories of America, it was a nice place to grow up in the 70s and 80s. I moved away after graduating from college - right around the time the mall opened.

    This never should have been built in the first place. Ashtabula was at the height of it's decline when this was built in the late 80's and I don't think it enjoyed even 10 years of success. There has been a huge loss of population in Ashtabula. There is also a TON of retail space available not counting the mall. Retailers are not looking at Ashtabula.

    • @TiltedTripodMedia
      @TiltedTripodMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I don’t think there was ever enough population in the area to support a mall

So if there is something you think isn’t accurate you’ll have to take it up with the government agency’s who make all the stats and those who write and post all the research. Sorry. Now because I live in Ohio have visited there a number of times in recent years. So I can say that I experienced a mall and downtown that was dead and the entire town looked poor and rundown. Now I’m sure it wasn’t always that way but that’s the Ashtabula I experienced. If you’d like to show me different I’ll gladly come make a video about it 😊.
