  • If you have a Lamy Safari, Al-Star, LX, or Vista ballpoint and you are tired of the Lamy M16 refill then here is how you upgrade the refill to a Pilot BRFN or BRF refill.

    I've successfully modified the barrel of a LAMY Vista ballpoint pen (which is the same pen just clear) with an easy modification. I cut 0.5cm from an empty PILOT G2 ink cartridge to extend the length of the PARKER G2 refill. Placed that inside the barrel where the clicker button is. Then at the writing tip where the writing tip extends and retracts, I used a hand drill (manual with no battery or electricity) with a 2.8mm drill bit to enlarge the hole. The hole diameter is now large enough for the PARKER G2 cartridge to easily extend and retract. The plastic gave quite easily. Because there's no vibration or wobble from the manual drill, there's no risk of harming the delicate parts. I was able to have the pen fully functional in under five minutes. I also have a recent Reddit post below on this in Pens.

    Great tutorial video, thank you. The proprietary refill issue is the one reason why I never bought a Lamy Safari, Vista, or Al-Star ballpoint. And that's because of a similar experience with my Sheaffer Big Red capped ballpoint in dark translucent green from the late '70s - early '80s. I love it, but it's a real b*t$h to find a refill that will fit and work. This hack reminds me of the hack that I use for my Tactile/Turn Side-Click in Titanium. I got the mid-sized model and alternate between Parker-G2, Pilot-G2, and Pentel Ener-Gel refills by cutting off 1.1 cm off of the Pilot-G2, and Pentel Ener-Gel refills. The Parker-G2s need no adjusting. But don't take my word for it. Measure those refills for yourself before making your final cut. Cheers 🙂.

    I just bought one! I love the look of the rollerball and the fountain... but unfortunately 99% of my writing is on charts and legal docs. On top of this im a lefty, so i need ink that wont smudge and run or go through the pages. And having a click to engage pen also that i fish out of my scrubs is a plus too. Looking forward to using this as well as my zebra f701 (fisher refill) and parker jotter!

      @thisisnothere14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Update! So the lamy is great, but now that i've bought pilot g2's ive been using those so much more so than my fleet of good pens oddly enough 😂

    • @alyantza
      @alyantza ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No wonder, the g2 is a timeless classic and a gateway drug into ballpoint and roller pens, no babying required for them. Da vinci used to write from right to left to bypass the smudging problem, maybe you can do that too? Bonus points if you also mirror your writing :wink:

    This worked a treat. Any suggestions on how to do the same for a Lamy Logo M+. Slightly narrower opening for a refill than the safari.

      @edm2822 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used a carbide dremel tip and a pin vise to ream out the tip. It doesn’t take much. The Lamy refill will still work but there just be slight tip wiggle.

      Thanks for the suggestion@@edm2822. Based on your idea I was able to shave a bigger hole using a stanley knife with a bit of persistance.

    If I can find an alternative refill for my Lamy 2000 ball point pen, I won't put it on the shelf for years. What a sad thing!

    • @unsharpen

      Yes this is the other style of Lamy ballpoint with the shelf piece at the front. It’s real problem if you want to change the refill, but I’m working on it!

    Is there anyway to use rollerball refill (like M63 or M66) to replace with M16? I like the feeling with this Lamy ballpoint pen but feel not good with the ink refill. Thanks :D

    I'm curious, is there a reason why plastic pen refills aren't completely filled with ink besides just stinginess?

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the official answer would be that some expansion area is needed and buffer space is needed for the factory process, but I think it’s probably cost savings

    Great video as is the norm.
    I am yet to purchase a Lamy, nearly picked up a fountain pen the other week but didn't end up getting it.
    Completely unrelated and I know you're not massive into fountain pens but have you ever tried a Wing Sung 3008? Mine arrived today and it's very impressive considering what little I paid for it.

      I just picked up the Lamy 2000 and the Swift. I like them both mechanically, but the Swift uses a much better refill IMO. So far I am not a big fan of the M16 (as seen in this video). The M66 that the Swift uses is a much nicer (capless rollerball) refill.

    When I started my pen collecting habit, I did buy several pieces that are incredibly cool but can't ink easily. Two Aurora Thesi BP, an Aurora Magellano BP and even worse, an S. T. Dupont Classique Rollerball are a testament of my failure to take details into account.
    Are there any refill hacks to ink those? Especially the Dupont Roller which is the loveliest of them all.
    Thanks in advance and greetings from Caracas (Venezuela)!

      @@unsharpen Dear Unsharpen, had a spent BIC Bu2 retractable point (push button deploy but side button release) laying around and since it was transparent I could see the refill.
      It has two sets of "wings" in the plastic tube, a smaller one that engages with the spring near the tip and a second one, a little bit bigger on the rear end and very close to the first.
      By sanding the smaller wings near the tip I got the refill to be adequate to the mechanism, as the secondary bigger wings are about the proper length. Now I have an Aurora Thesi that accepts, deploys and releases the refill.
      That said, the retracting side of the equation needs a little bit of help on my part. Also the tip does not protrude as much as an original refill, so I have to buy a BIC Bu2 pen to extract the refill, modify it and put it again to see at what angle will it write. I do not expect a high quality experience but at least my pens won't be idle.

    • @FGBFGB-vt7tc
      @FGBFGB-vt7tc 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@unsharpen As an update, didn't find a BIC Bu2 retractable ballpoint but a Sysabe one. It writes smoothly so being a gel pen is not out the question (even if it is not capped but retractable). Leveled the existing wings and made new ones with a small plier, cut the very long refill and put a little vaseline on the cut end, as it originally had kind of a grease there (another sign it could be a gel pen). Do I keep on writing on my results or do I stop now?
      Hope it helps a fellow enthusiast!

    I have a issue with some Vintage Eversharp Ball Point pens that I bought. I don't know much about them, except that they were sold as shells and the Cartridges were sold seperalely so you could choose what color of ink you would like to use. I have over 30 of these in Green, Blue, Black, & Red all new, never used. I have not been able to find anything to find that works. According to the display they called them Eversharp Retractable and took a refill called KEC-54 Kimberly Cartridge. If you are unsure about these pens or refills, I can send you some pictures of the display and pens. I could even send you 1 or if you are interested could send you a set of 4. I don't need or want 30 of them haha. Please let me know if you can help.
