    As a newbie, it took me a week to realize that my inconsistent chromatograms was due to the large pump volume of my agilent pump (~600-900 µL). Going at a flow rate of 20 µL/min meant it would take 45+ min to reequilibrate my column after high organic. The EMPV system saved me, as this pumps out way higher flow rate inside the pump, diverting most of it to waste.

    What's makes it more confusing sometimes is different terminology used. Agilent use Delay Volume and Extra Column Volume. While some others use Dwell Volume and Dead Volume.

      Indeed. I view delay volume as the volume inside the pump, dwell volume as any extra column volume from mixing to column, and dead volume as the volume between the autosampler and the detector. I might be wrong though..
